How To Sell Textbooks on Amazon FBA For Beginners

Repricer: Was it easy to get set up?

James: It was very easy to set up. We made the business decision to trial it for a month and off we went. I watched lots of YouTube videos and then set up my rules and we were away.

Andrew: I did nothing.

James: You watched.

Andrew: I did watch.

James: Its a little bit odd getting it all set up, youve got the power to create whatever rules you want, but you realise that youve got very few ideas of what rules you should use. Every seller is different, every situation is different and suddenly youre asked to play God with your prices and make sure you get the rules right.

Repricer: Did you find the support team helpful?

James: I shouldve used them more. I really shouldve done.

Andrew: Go on tell them.

James: I got one of the rules wrong, and we sold a £120 book for £30 It was entirely my fault and I shouldve seen what was going to happen, but I didnt. Someone got lucky.

Andrew: So I didnt speak to him for a week!

James: Hes lying. It was fine. Although we couldve got more for the book, we only paid £2.99 for it in the first place. Easy come, Easy Go.

Repricer: How much do you pay each month? Is it worth it?

James: We have between 1000 and 2500 SKUs.

Andrew: Which are rapidly diminishing in this Covid world.

Repricer: Do you use any specific tactics when repricing books?

Repricer: Do you have different pricing strategies for different types of stock, and time periods in which you must sell the stock?

Andrew: Ha!

Do Amazon Buy Books & Textbooks

is a platform where customers can buy and sell used or new items. Unlike Amazon Prime, which offers free two-day shipping on millions of items, Amazon Marketplace does not have a set shipping policy. Each seller on Marketplace sets their own shipping terms, which may include free shipping, standard shipping, or expedited shipping. If a customer is interested in buying an item from a Marketplace seller, they will need to contact the seller directly to discuss shipping arrangements.

While Amazon no longer buys books/textbooks directly from customers, it is still possible to sell books/textbooks on Marketplace. In order to do so, customers must sign up as a seller and create a listing for their book/textbook. Once the listing is created, other Amazon customers will be able to see it and make offers on the book/textbook. If a customer decides to sell their book/textbook through Amazon Marketplace, they will be responsible for setting their own shipping terms and arranging shipments with buyers. However, selling books/textbooks on Amazon Marketplace is still a convenient way to get rid of unwanted books/textbooks.

The Way You Source Your Inventory

If you want to find the best places to sell textbooks on Amazon, you have three sourcing options:

Wholesalers: These companies buy enormous books from publishers to sell them to resellers.

Distributors: These businesses assist publishers in getting their books sold. You can buy books from distributors, although they are frequently more expensive than wholesalers.

Publishers: Some publishers can sell their books to you directly, but only in large volumes.

Youll need a massive budget for each of these options because youll have to buy in quantity. However, because youll be purchasing a large number of books at once, your per-book cost will be cheap, resulting in a higher return on each sale.

Other places to buy used textbooks include thrift stores, book store sales, yard sales, online marketplaces like eBay or Facebook Marketplace, estate sales, etc.

Selling Textbooks On Amazon

When it comes to selling books on Amazon, textbooks can turn a huge profit. Textbook buyback and resale is a popular business among entrepreneur-minded college students buying textbooks at the end of the semester and reselling them on Amazon can be an extremely lucrative venture.

One of the pros of selling textbooks on Amazon is that they are much easier to find, list and price when compared to collectible books. Textbooks are already listed in Amazons catalog due to being modern and more well-known. When you have an antique book with a faded copyright date and no dust jacket, determining the item details can be quite a feat to accomplish.

Condition is Key. Pay extra attention to the condition of every book you list. Listing a book as Like New when it is used is an error that could get your seller account suspended. When you provide the item details, be sure to note everything about the books condition marks or scratches on the cover, missing or ripped pages, writing on the inside or outside of the book, and anything else visible.

Defining ISBNs. On any particular textbook, an ISBN is a code that determines the specific edition you are selling. Usually the ISBN is 10 or 13 digits, sometimes containing a hyphen. You can find the ISBN on the textbooks copyright page on the interior, on the back, or with the barcode. Its important to get the ISBN exactly right when you list a textbook so your customers know they are getting the right edition.

Convince Your Email List To Leave Reviews

Can I Sell My Books to Amazon & Are There Alternatives?

When you do publish a book, you should mention your new book in every email to your subscribers.

Whether its at the bottom or at the top of the email, let your readers know you have a book they can buy. Also, convince your email list to leave you reviews. If they subscribed to your messages, they are more likely to not only buy your book, but leave you a positive review.

High Demand In Academics

Another benefit of selling textbooks is the high academic demand. As mentioned, textbooks are commonly used for academic courses and lessons. Most curriculums use specific textbooks and center their lesson plans around the textbook chapters. There are hundreds of schools teaching the same courses and lessons that all use the same textbooks. And lesson plans usually stay constant from year to year. Every year, there will be classes that require your textbook and even more students trying to buy your textbooks. Textbooks are one of the only books that can truly take advantage of this high academic demand.

Do Your Books Have To Be In Good Condition

Amazon doesn’t offer a range of prices for textbooks. If they’re in good condition, Amazon will likely buy them. If they’re falling apart, it won’t. Amazon is relatively demanding about the quality of textbooks.

The cover and binding must be intact, without torn pages or water damage. There can’t be any notes or names on the cover, and the interior of the book can’t have “excessive” writing or highlighting. Instead of offering lower prices for damaged books, Amazon simply won’t buy them.

Amazon Hot New Releases List

As weve mentioned above, Amazon gives extra exposure to new releases books in the first 30 days of their launches. You might have heard of the Amazon 30-day cliff: a term authors use to describe how their sales plummet a month after their books release.

Whats responsible for the extra exposure given to new books? Mostly, the Hot New Releases list. The list itself isnt that easy to find while browsing Amazon its also hidden in the sidebar. But its often featured on the main Kindle Store homepage, and is also a primary driver of email recommendations. Whenever you receive an email from Amazon promoting the best new releases in Self-Help, you know where that email is coming from.

The crude way to identify books for online arbitrage is to search for them manually. However, this is time-consuming and often ineffective.

    Pick The Perfect Categories

When picking your categories as an Amazon seller, you want to strike a balance between relevance and non-competitiveness.

If your category isnt relevant, readers will be upset because they felt they were promised certain story elements by the category that the author didnt deliver.

If your category is too competitive, you face little chance of becoming the #1 bestselling author in your category. If you make it to #1 in your category, thats a huge marketing tool with lasting power.

From then on, you can boast in every piece of marketing that your book was #1 in whatever category on Amazon.
