Amazon Fire Tablets are great, affordable devices, but the user interface is very different from that of other tablets. Theyre Amazon through and through, which even includes the Appstore. Well show you how to download apps and games on a Fire Tablet.

Although Fire Tablets are technically Android tablets, they dont come with the Google Play Store on board. If you want, you can easily get the Play Store up and running. However, you can get many of the things that you need from the default app store, which is aptly named the Appstore.

The Amazon Appstore works just like any other app store. Lets get started.

RELATED:

First, find the Appstore on the home screen under the Home tab.

The Appstore is organized into several sections at the top. The main Home tab includes a bunch of suggestions. You can tap Categories to get more specific.

Select an app or a game to see more information about it. Here, you can tap Get to begin downloading.

A pop-up will tell you what the app needs to access. If you agree with the permissions, tap Download.

Install Google Play On Amazon Fire Tablet From Apk

Once you find the downloaded APK files and locate them as Step 3 says, go ahead to install them one by one. Just tap on these files one by one to install the APK files.

Once you tap on the files, you will get a screen with an install button on the bottom right. Tap on INSTALL to install these APK files of Android apps or Google Playon Fire tablet. If you find the INSTALL button in Grey and unable to install, please read troubleshooting Step 7.

Installation Problems On Fire Os 5600

If youre still on Fire OS 5.6.0.0, the following instructions apply to you. However, since newer versions of Fire OS do not have this issue, we recommend making sure your software is up to date rather than dealing with these issues. If you cannot upgrade your operating system for any reason, look through the guide below for assistance.

Several readers have alerted that the installation buttons on these displays have been repeatedly grayed out during installation on both Amazons newest tablets , and more specifically on Fire OS version 5.6.0.0. If you installed the Play Store prior to this update, weve seen no issues using the apps as installed above. Indeed, we also saw installation difficulties on a brand-new Fire HD 10 running Fire OS 5.6.0.0, which is how we came to begin testing this update to look for a workaround.

Theres good news and bad news on this front: first, there are several reported workarounds, both that weve seen when testing the installation process and from readers online, specifically over at the XDA forums, where this original guide found its basis. The bad news is that all of the potential fixes dont seem to be reliable. Still, we were able to get the Play Store up and running on a Fire tablet that had never had it installed before it just takes some patience and a little luck.

Installing Google Play On An Older Kindle Fire

You can install Google Play on an older Kindle Fire, but this needs a PC, and you will have to root the Fire tablet as you would root any other Android device. So heres how you go about it:

  • Navigate to Settings > Device Options.
  • You will see your Serial Number listed here. Tap it repeatedly until a countdown starts, and finally, a message flashes on your screen that Developer Options have been activated, and it will appear as an option beneath.
  • Tap Developer Options. Here, look for Enable ADB. Once you tap that, it will ask you to confirm, so go ahead and hit Enable again.
  • Now, connect your Fire tablet to the PC with your USB cable.
  • Your PC will then download the necessary drivers. Also, your tablet will ask you if you want to enable USB debugging, so you need to tap OK to allow it.
  • You will now have to download an installer app for Google Play Store on your PC. This depends on your Fire OS version if you are running Fire OS 5.3.0 or an older version, to download a file called Amazon-Fire-5th-Gen-SuperTool-old.zip.
  • If your Fire tablet is running Fire OS 5.3.1 or a newer version, to download Amazon-Fire-5th-Gen-Install-Play-Store.zip.
  • You should now have a zip file downloaded. Extract it, and then look for 1-Install-Play-Store.bat and double-click it.
  • You should now see a Command Prompt window with some instructions on it. All you need to care about is option 2, which is Install Google Play Store. So go ahead and enter 2 on your PC, and hit Enter.
  • Second Method: Via Android Debugger

The Play Store is installed on a computer by using this process. You will need a USB cable since you will be connecting the tablet to a PC. Additionally, this method will allow you to bypass the hidden application restrictions, which are often encountered with the first method.

Step 1: To follow these instructions to the letter, you must open the Settings tab on the tablet and then navigate to the Device Options page.

Step 2: Turn on Developer Options.

To activate the Developer Options for the particular tablet and serial number, you need to reach for the serial number and click it over and over again at least seven times. Even though Fire OS is still a modified version of Android, it easily allows you to access developer options.

Step 3: Then, click the ADB icon and enable access. Also, agree to the warning if it appears.

Note: It should by this time be possible to connect the concerned Fire Tablet to the PC using the USB cable. If you are having trouble downloading drivers, you can always download them online and place them on the laptop to readily detect the tablet.

The tablet needs to be unlocked, and the USB debugging feature must be enabled once detected.

Step 4: The script link will allow you to download the required package once your PC is ready.

Note: A zip file will be downloaded directly onto the computer from the script link. Ensure that the file is easily located by extracting it and putting it in a file.bat format, if possible.

    Step 5: Install Google Play.

    Enable Installation From Unknown Sources

The first step in this process is to enable apps to be installed from outside the Amazon Appstore. This action allows you to open and install applications from downloaded APK files, which is how we’ll get the Play Store running.

First, go to the main ‘Home’ page on your home screen and open the Settings app. Then tap the ‘Security & Privacy category , find the switch for ‘Apps from Unknown Sources,’ and turn it on.

    Image Gallery

If tapping ‘Apps from Unknown Sources’ brings up a list of apps, you don’t need to do anything. You may receive a popup when installing APKs, but you’ll just have to tap the ‘Allow’ button when prompted. If you want to skip a popup, make sure this option is enabled for the Silk browser.

Now you’re ready to download and install the APKs needed to get the Google Play Store running.

    Running The Play Store

If all went smoothly, you were able to sign in, browse the Play Store and download the apps you want. You probably dont need to download the ones that are already available on Amazons Appstore, but you can double dip if you want. Others that arent available there would be good to grab, especially YouTube and Apple Music, among other examples.

One thing I should note is that I would not download or install the Alexa app from the Play Store. It works fine on its own within Fire OS, but you do have the option to use the Android app if you prefer it. I just dont know how much of a conflict there might be from a software perspective if both are active.

Beyond that, the limitations are largely based on the tablets power, so certain games may not run well, for example. Fire tablets have modest specs, and demanding apps need good optimization, so your experience may vary.

Installing A File Browser From The Amazon App Store

This should be an optional step for most users, but certain Amazon devices have had trouble installing the necessary APKs onto their devices without installing a file manager onto your Fire tablet from the Amazon App Store first. If youre having an issue getting the files above to install on your device, we recommend installing File Commander, a free app that makes it easy to view the files stored on your tablet. Its nothing special, but for this process, we dont need anything too powerful to finish installing the Play Store

To reiterate, most people will not need a file browser to finish this process, but enough users have reported difficulty with installing APKs without a file manager downloaded on your device that its good to know about. Once youve completed the process as listed above, you can uninstall File Commander.

Alternatively, you can also use the Docs application on your device, which comes pre-installed and includes the ability to browse local files, instead of using an application like File Commander. Docs will allow you to browse to your Downloads folder and select the app installation files one at a time if you accidentally swiped them away from your notification tray or if youre having difficulties installing the apps on Fire OS 5.6.0.0.

Using The Google Play Store On An Amazon Fire Tablet

Once youve finished installing the Play Store on your tablet, you can basically begin using the device how you otherwise normally would. The first thing we recommend doing is diving into the app list on your device, in order to ensure that you dont have any updates to the Play Store or otherwise. You may see some Amazon apps state they need to be updated here unfortunately, thats a bug with keeping both the Amazon Appstore and the Google Play Store on the same device.

Apps you installed with the Amazon Appstore that also have listings in the Play Store will constantly need updating from the Play Store likewise, once youve updated them from the Play Store, theyll likely ask to be updated from the Amazon App Store. Its a loop that goes on forever, but you can fix it by simply diving into your device settings and disabling updates within the Amazon Appstore.

With the Play Store on your device, you can use it just as you would on any standard Android device. Some apps will be duplicates from the Amazon Appstore, such as Netflix, which has listings in both platforms. Other apps, however, are only available on this platform, which means you should make the most of the Play Store now that you have it.
