Give Your Groceries A Hand: Whole Foods Market In Austin Offers Pay By Palm Option

AUSTIN You can now pay with your palm at a Whole Foods Market in Austin.

Amazon One, the retail giants palm-recognition service, is now available at the Arbor Trails location in southwest Austin. Its the first store in Austin where customers can pay for groceries by scanning a palm in the checkout line.

We are excited to introduce Amazon One as an option for our Austin-area Whole Foods Market customers, said Leandro Balbinot, chief technology officer for Whole Foods. We are always looking for new ways to satisfy and delight our customers and offer convenient options to improve the shopping experience.

Customers can connect one or both palm prints to their credit or debit cards through Amazon One, which can be done at the checkout counter before a purchase is made or at a kiosk in a store. Once enrolled, customers can place their hand over the reader at the checkout line after their groceries are scanned to pay.

Amazon officials said the service will be available in all Austin stores in the coming weeks. Austin is the first region outside of Seattle to have the palm-reading pay option. Stores in Seattle began using the service in April 2021.

Amazon said palm images arent stored on the devices and that, images are encrypted and sent to a highly secure area we custom-built for Amazon One in the cloud where we create your palm signature.

The Organic Grocer Says A $10 Fee Is Better Than Raising Prices

Amazon will soon start charging customers for food delivery from Whole Foods Market, including Prime Members, who are already paying $119 a year for their membership.

Customers have been told the purpose of the fee is “to cover operating costs, so we can continue to offer the same competitive everyday prices in-store and online.” The upscale grocer maintains it was a preferable option to raising prices.

Customers will still be able to pick up their online orders at no extra charge.

Amazon is in the midst of an online groceries expansion, with industry analysts at Edge by Ascential expecting it will nearly double online sales to $26.7 billion in the next five years.

The retailer continues to battle Walmart and other supermarkets that are also heavily investing in online grocery shopping. But Amazon is expected to remain the top online grocer, as Walmart’s sales are only expected to hit $19.1 billion by 2026 .

The pandemic caused consumers to embrace e-commerce for groceries in a big way, and chains are expecting it to remain an important growth avenue as consumers continue using the channel in the future. It was already rapidly expanding before the coronavirus outbreak, but lockdowns and stay-at-home orders caused many previously reticent consumers to consider using the option.

Bloomberg reports Whole Foods delivered over three times more orders last year than in 2019.

Whole Foods Market Adopts Amazon One Palm

    Russell Redman 1 | Apr 21, 2021

Amazon is bringing its palm-scanning Amazon One contactless payment system to Whole Foods Market.

The retail giant said Wednesday that Amazon One, unveiled last fall, has launched at Madison Broadway Whole Foods store in Seattle and is earmarked for another seven Whole Foods locations in the Seattle area.

Offered by Amazons physical retail team, Amazon One uses custom-built algorithms and hardware to scan a persons unique palm signature and provide a fast, convenient and contactless means of enabling everyday activities such as checkout and payment at a store, presentation of a loyalty card, and secure entry at sites like a store, stadium or workplace.

At Whole Foods Market, were always looking for new and innovative ways to improve the shopping experience for our customers, Arun Rajan, senior vice president of technology and chief technology officer at Whole Foods Market, said in a statement. Working closely with Amazon, weve brought benefits like Prime member discounts, online grocery delivery and pickup, and free returns to our customers, and were excited to add Amazon One as a payment option beginning today. Were starting with an initial store at Madison Broadway in Seattle and look forward to hearing what customers think as we expand this option to additional stores over time.

The Amazon One device uses computer vision technology to create shoppers’ unique palm signatures.

A New Whole Foods Card Design And Limited

Chase introduced a new card design option for new Amazon Prime Rewards cardholders, featuring Whole Foods Market art. New cardmembers with an eligible Prime membership can choose the new design when they apply for the card. If youre an existing cardholder and would like to switch to the new design option, you can call in to request a new card after Jan. 22.

If you frequently shop at Whole Foods in-store, the new limited-time introductory offer can also be exciting news for you. Through March 3, new Amazon Prime Rewards Visa cardholders can earn a $100 statement credit after spending $100 in Whole Foods Market stores in the first two months from account opening. Alternatively, they can still choose the standard $70 Amazon gift card offer as a sign-up bonus.

Considering the standard bonus is lower, the new temporary offer might be a better deal. On the other hand, if you avoid shopping in-store or normally use Amazon Fresh for buying groceries, the gift card might make more sense for you.

‘supposed To Be A Side Gig’

Robert Bruno, a Whole Foods employee in Massachusetts, told CNBC the new structure takes away many of the perks in terms of flexibility, with shoppers free to accept multiple jobs, while the shorter shifts helps them to create their own schedule.

“This is supposed to be a side gig for a lot of people,” Bruno said in an email. “If there are changes in terms of shift scheduling/length, I can easily see a lot of people leaving.”

Some Whole Foods locations are serving as pilots for the change, according to the letter. An employee at one store said workers were expected to fill online orders and assist with other tasks when needed, such as bagging groceries, stocking shelves and operating points of sale.

The person, who wasn’t authorized to speak publicly and asked to remain anonymous, described the new role as requiring quadruple the amount work for the same pay and no flexibility.

In-store shoppers are also expected to achieve certain metrics while they’re on the job, similar to the productivity quotas required for Amazon warehouse and delivery workers.
