In IngramSpark, not only can you set up your hardcover and paperback versions of your book but you can also set up your ebook at the same time and gain book distribution, including Amazon, Apple, Nook, and Kobo, along with an additional 40,000 retailers who order from Ingram.

With KDP for your print and ebooks, you will only get distribution to Amazon. So, if youre looking for a one-stop solution for printing and book distribution for both your print books and ebooks, IngramSpark may be the better choice for the broadest distribution that also includes Amazon.

Who Owns The E

It is ideal if you own the e-book files, and that is usually the case when you pay out of pocket for conversion and formatting services. Some services, like Draft2Digital, essentially offer free e-book conversion tools when starting with a Word document. That means that they consider any converted e-book files yours to do with as you please whether or not you distribute through their system.

If Its Exclusive Whats The Term Of The Contract

Pre Algebra Books Barnes And Noble : Algebra II Workbook ...

For example, with KDP Select, the term is 90 days. This is acceptable for most authors.

However, if youre working with an agent to publish e-book , you will likely be asked to sign a contract that has a longer term. This is simply to ensure that, after your e-book files are prepared, your cover designed, and all ducks put in a row, that you dont suddenly change your mind and take your e-book elsewhere. The agent or publishing partner needs to be confident of recouping their initial outlay.

I recommend you not commit for longer than a year due to how fast the market conditions can change for e-books.

On the face of it, there isnt that much difference between the CreateSpace service and what KDP is offering on the print side. IngramSpark has continued to improve and expand its business by offering the widest choice of trim sizes, many in both hardcover and paperback bindings. Additionally, there are several different color options that virtually mirror traditional printing. Amazon KDP options are more limited as they’re missing hardcover, some trim sizes, no landscape option, and offering only one version of color.

So what do you do if you want your beautiful book cover design on a jacket to complete the look? Thats where IngramSpark comes in. IngramSpark can print both case laminate or paper-over-board hardcovers as well as jacketed hardcovers with a Digital Cloth cover on the book. This means that your childrens book can have a glossy hardcover in a beautiful landscape trim size, or your new literary fiction novel can have a professional jacket. Hardcovers are not only practical for appearances but libraries prefer to buy hardcovers because of their durability.

What Do Publishing Companies Do

In the book industry, book publishing companies serve a wide variety of purposes, all related to the books production process. Depending on the publishing route, a book publishing companys purpose can vary as well.

In a traditional publishing company, the author is given a book contract that basically sells their rights to the book to the publisher, who then oversees the production process.

In publishing companies that cater primarily to self-published authors, the purposes can vary as well, according to the company type. Well cover the main types of self-publishing companies in the next section.

Book Retailers Vs Book Aggregators Vs Full Service

Before we get into the list of best self-publishing companies, it’s important to understand that there are three types of companies: Retailers, Aggregators, and Full Service.

Book retailers are markets that directly sell books. Through these, as an author, you can upload your book and directly sell on their market. Book retailers consist of Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Apple, Kobo, and more.

However, there is another self publishing company called aggregators.’ With these, you can submit your book, and they will send it out to all the other 40+ book retailers saving you time and energy. Some of the most popular book aggregators are Draft2Digital, Smashwords, PublishDrive and more.

Finally, there are Full Service publishing companies. These companies help in every facet of book writing, getting an editor, formatting the books, publishing and even book promotion marketing.

Do You Control The Price

Self Publishing A Book Online: Barnes and Noble Press Books

While some services may have reasonable pricing restrictions , standard practice is to give the author complete control over pricing.

Caveat: Most e-book retailers mandate that you not offer more favorable pricing anywhere else . Amazon in particular is known for carefully policing this and will automatically lower the price of your e-book if they find you pricing it lower somewhere else.

What File Formats Do They Accept

This is critical to know upfront because it usually determines whether or not you can use the service in the first place and how much youll get charged for formatting and conversion if thats a service you need.

A few things to know:

  • Microsoft Word is commonly accepted. However: If youre publishing direct to Kindle or Nook , unless you unformat your Word document, it may look terrible on an e-reading device when automatically converted to an e-book format. Most retailers e-publishing services have extensive guidelines, preview programs, and other ways of ensuring your work looks OK before your e-book goes live.
  • EPUB is the industry standard e-book file format. If you want to create your own EPUB file, see the end of this post for recommendations.
  • Many conversion/formatting services typically offer you EPUB and MOBI files since that covers you on Amazon and just about any other e-book retailer.
  • PDF is one of the most difficult file formats to convert to EPUB. Expect to pay.

Ingramspark Vs Amazon Kdp

by Robin Cutler

The author and publishing world has been abuzz with the recent news from Amazon that its CreateSpace print-on-demand business is now being folded into its Kindle Direct Publishing program that launched officially a few years ago. Whether or not this action will be a positive move for authors will inevitably be seen in time. But today, IngramSpark client support is blowing up more than normal with questions from authors asking us what it all means. The question we used to get most often was, “What’s the difference between IngramSpark vs CreateSpace?” Now it seems the question will be, “What’s the difference between IngramSpark vs KDP?” So, I will attempt to help clarify with as much information as I have.

First of all, Im often asked to compare IngramSpark with the self-publishing services that Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing offers, and Ill lay it out for you here. But before I do that, I want to make it clear that Ingram and Amazon enjoy a very collaborative relationship where human beings on both sides work tirelessly to improve the experience for our collective publisher and author content providers. The people who work on both sides are not adversarial as is often assumed in online posts nor is there any evidence that Amazon is intentionally targeting and depressing the .

B& n Press Just Sweetened Its Deal For Indie Authors

February 1, 2021 By Mercy Pilkington

One of the most important things about self-publishing has always been that authors were finally in control. Without gatekeepers blocking the way, authors could sell where they wanted to, price their books how they wanted, write whatever genre and crossovers they wanted. Choice is a glorious thing when it comes to buying and selling, but that choice diminished somewhat with the rise of Amazon.

Still, other platforms are out there doing the work for authors who choose to sell their books in a variety of retail locations. Barnes and Noble, whose self-publishing platform has undergone a number of dramatic changes over the years, has just announced some new features that will prove to be very enticing to authors who sell their books wide.

According to a press release from B& N, Effective today, Barnes & Noble Press authors will receive a flat 70% royalty rate for eBook sales, up from a range of 40% to 65%. The self-publishing platform will also accelerate payments to 30 days after purchase instead of the prior 60 days. In addition, Barnes & Noble Press will expand its array of merchandising options, including curated ads on BN.com, better email placement, and social media and blog exposure on Barnes & Noble Press and NOOK channels.

THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO SELF-PUBLISHING PLATFORMS

Two decades ago, self-published authors commanded about asmuch respect for their work as used car salesmen or politicians.

In other words, no one was taking them seriously.

But over time, stories began to emerge about authors likeMark Dawson, who has sold over 2 million copies of his books. Or AmandaHocking, who back in 2012 reportedly made $2.5 million from sales of her books. Both authors are examples of the earliest success stories in theself-publishing world.

People started to take notice. And as the success storiescontinued to grow, self-published authors gradually gained a lot more respectfor their work.

Today, choosing to self-publish can make a lot of sense for many authors.

If you are interested in self-publishing, the first step isdeciding on a platform for publishing and distributing your book.

The good news is, there are many options available toauthors interested in taking on the reins of publishing their book. The badnews is, there are so many options available, it can be overwhelming andconfusing to navigate all the choices that are out there.

You will need to consider what kind of support services you are willing to pay for, as well as your your budget, your format, and your plans for distribution.

Sales Report: Barnes & Noble Vs Amazon

The two most common places an independent publisher takes their work for paperbacks are Kindle Direct Publishing, which sells on Amazon, and Barnes & Noble Press, which sells the book on Barnes & Noble.

Usually, I choose to publish on both platforms because I know some readers are loyal to one or the other. Personally, I typically order my books for pleasure reading on Barnes & Noble because I want to support bricks-and-mortar booksellers, but I occasionally order a paperback on Amazon . My latest work, Church Sweet Home, is available in both e-books and paperback on both retailers.

I thought it might be interesting to compare the results, so I ordered author copies from both publishers. Self-publishers can order copies for their own use and in-person sales without having to pay royalties these are called author copies. The results are interesting.

The Barnes & Noble copy is on the left, Amazon on the right.

For reference, both publishers got the same file for cover and interior.

I ordered one copy on Barnes & Noble and twenty copies on Amazon on the same day, June 15. Why? Because Barnes & Noble Press charges more for its author copy: $6.27. And Im more cost-conscious than I am morally superior. Amazons author copies cost $5 each .

The single Barnes & Noble Press copy arrived in an inordinate amount of packaging twenty-three days after I ordered it . Shipping and handling cost me $6.50 plus 70 cents tax for a total per-copy price of $13.47.

How To Sell Your Self

The qualifications for getting into the NOOK Press in-store program:

  • The book must be published with NOOK Press B& N’s own self-publishing arm.
  • The book must have sold at least 1,000 e-book units in the previous year.

For self-published authors, getting to these levels isn’t easy. But remember, these levels plus any momentum that may be gained by the in-store print presence help build sales momentum toward potential attention from a major publisher if that’s your goal.

Of course, sales numbers don’t tell the whole story, so even if your sales figures hit the minimums, it doesn’t hurt to give your pitch a little help. Here’s how:

    Barnes & Noble Press – self-publishing process step-by-step

Here are my sales in the different markets at the time of writing this article:

As you can see, I’ve made the most of my sales through Amazon, but I’ve had a significant amount of sales thanks to aggregators as well. Although the information above is lifetime values, here is my current layout of the self publishing companies I use for my books:

I personally upload to the following retailers:

    • Kindle Direct Publishing

Then for the rest of the retailers I use the following aggregator:

    • Draft2Digital

Why D2D? Well, I spell that out here. However, I’ve been in contact with PublishDrive and I’m REALLY impressed with what I’ve heard. Pretty soon, I’ll be writing an article about them and if they deliver on half the stuff I’ve heard, then I might just become a PublishDrive fan. We’ll see, so stay tuned.

Choosing one of the best self publishing companies is not about selecting the company with the biggest reach for the most niche sales. It is about finding out what is best for your book and your situation.
