Does Amazon Fire Tablet Need Antivirus

How To Spot A Dodgy App On The App Store

We explain why you donât need antivirus, but you still need to be careful on your fire tablet by Bu

The dedicated app stores get rid of the majority of dodgy apps, but some slip through the net. They often don’t stick around for long as Apple and Google get their acts together and take them off, but there’s still a window of time when they can be downloaded.

It’s not always easy to see which apps you should avoid, but they often take the form of accessories or customisation tools, such as wallpapers, video or photo editors, file managers, games and tools like a QR reader or torch.

When choosing an app, look for one that has plenty of reviews and has been on the app store for a while.

Do Kindle Fire Security Issues Combined With Weak Silk Browser Security Make The Red

Amazons Kindle Fire tablet was the hot present this past Christmas, and by all accounts, consumer demand hasn’t slowed since, so expect them to appear any day now on an enterprise network near you if they haven’t already. However, there are plenty of privacy and security reasons that should make network administrators think twice about letting these Android-based devices connect to the internal corporate network.

A users entire Web history makes an attractive target for hackers.

At first glance, Kindle Fire security seems decent enough. The device gives users an option to set a password in order to use it, and a recent platform update added an option to prevent Wi-Fi access without inputting a password. Unfortunately, the Android OS is the No. 1 target of choice for malicious hackers, and new security flaws in the platform are being discovered all the time. This makes any Android device, including the Kindle Fire, difficult to secure in an enterprise environment, and in turn, enterprises should question the viability of any Android device as an enterprise endpoint without sufficient security technology controls in place, such as a mobile device management or network access control product.

However, the platform itself is not the Kindle Fire’s biggest security issue. Its Silk Web browser, based on the less-than-secure WebKit browser engine, provides even more cause for concern.

The Full Scan Didnt Help

Assuming that the antivirus hasnt helped you in any way or that youve even tried more than one AV solution without success, youre only left with performing a factory reset.

Before you do that, consider backing up whatever you dont want to lose. As you can expect, all your previously purchased books, games, or other apps remain associated with your Amazon account, which means youll be able to download those the moment youve finished the factory reset.

When youre ready, head to the Quick Access menu to go to Settings, navigate to Device Options, and select the Reset to Factory Defaults option. Once you confirm the process, your Kindle will restart and initiate the reset.

Then, you should be the happy owner of a virus-free tablet. That, of course, if youre not unfortunate enough to deal with a virus that can escape factory resets.

How A Kindle Tablet Can Get A Virus

Amazon

If we stick to semantics, viruses, as the type of malware that self-replicates and self-distributes, are unlikely to show up on a Kindle device. However, other malware, as in annoying software that affects performances without necessarily spreading, can land on your Kindle tablet.

After all, Fire OS is a form of Android, the most targeted operating system for mobile cyberattacks. Depending on how youre using the tablet, you could get viruses by downloading infected apps.

As mentioned, the Amazon Appstore is considered a safe place to download third-party apps, as Amazon is doing a decent job at vetting the loaded apps. However, its not impossible to get malware from there, so dont just assume that nothing wrong can happen.

If you choose to download apps from a third-party vendor from outside the Kindle App Store, the risks of getting malware are even higher.

As you can imagine, if you use your Kindle Fire to browse the web, the risk of getting an infection grows exponentially, especially if you have no security software installed on it.

Last but not least, your Kindle tablet could get viruses even if you have the habit of connecting it to different PCs through a USB cable. Once you do that, it acts as an external hard drive. Maybe you only want to recharge its battery, or perhaps you want to transfer some files. Either way, its risky as long as the device you connect to is already infected with malware or viruses.

How To Install Downloader On Fire Tv Stick/fire Cube

  • Go to Search on your Firestick, then type downloader, then select the Downloaderthumbnail from the list.
  • Choose Download to save the installation to your Firestick or Fire Cube.
  • When finished downloading, select Open to launch the installation process.
  • Select Allow when asked to access photos, media, and files.
  • Select OK on the Quick Start Guide.
  • Are Fire Tablets Immune From Viruses

Technically, no. But cybercriminals tend to put most effort into writing malware for Windows because it runs on hundreds of millions of computers and laptops. By contrast, the number of Amazon Fire tablets is very small, so theres little incentive to target those users.

Plus, as long as you install apps from Amazons Appstore and not from anywhere else, its highly unlikely any virus-ridden apps can get onto your tablet.

Even if they do, they dont have free rein to access other files on the tablet or hardware such as the camera and microphone. When you install an app, it has to ask permission for any of these things, so dont grant it if youre not happy or dont entirely trust the app.

Finally, Fire tablets automatically update so youll always have the latest version of the software which should be the most secure.

Is Google Play A Hot Bed Of Malware

The idea that malware-infected apps are proliferating in Google Play is popular, but is there any statistical evidence to back it? At NetEvents Americas back in 2012 a BT , security expert Jill Knesek suggested that up to a third of Android applications carried some form of malware and that most devices are compromised. It was widely reported, but not true. ZDNet questioned BT on the subject and it backpedaled, saying that it no longer wishes to talk about the subject. The claims have yet to be supported by any released report.

So is all this talk really just scaremongering designed to panic you into installing antivirus software? Chris DiBona, Open Source Programs Manager at Google, certainly thought so when he released an update tackling the topic on his back in November, 2011. In it, he argued that: Yes, virus companies are playing on your fears to try to sell you bs protection software for Android, RIM and iOS. They are charlatans and scammers. IF you work for a company selling virus protection for Android, RIM or iOS, you should be ashamed of yourself.

Smartphones are, however, becoming increasingly more interesting for cybercriminals.

He was talking about traditional virus problems of the kind you might see on Windows or Mac computers. Mobile platforms are not at risk in the same way because of the way they were designed. He makes a distinction between viruses which spread themselves and bad apps containing malware, which you have to choose to install.

sorry to be so stupid. I have virus protection on my other devices. Wasn’t sure about a kindle fire. On my old kindle fire, I only used it as an ereader.

I’ll look into AVG, but being an Amazon product I wondered if there was something specific out there that was better for it.

thank you so much for your help. I tried to get it just by going to the internet and it wouldn’t download. I needed to go to the Amazon App store as you suggested. However, I downloaded Malwarebytes instead. Do I still need AVG?

    Testing Results From The Labs

Do these Android antivirus utilities work? We look to three independent testing labs to find out. Almost all the listed products appear in results from at least one lab three show up in all of them.

Researchers at AV-Comparatives challenged each Android antivirus product to defend against over 3,000 prevalent Android malware samples found in the wild. In the latest round of testing, Avira, Bitdefender, G Data, Kaspersky, and Trend Micro scored a perfect 100%.

The latest test from AV-Test Institute hit 15 Android antivirus solutions with thousands of malware samples. Researchers also installed thousands more non-malicious programs, to make sure that the antivirus didn’t wrongly identify them as malware. They assigned each product up to six protection points for blocking malware, six points for minimal impact on performance and battery life, and six usability points for refraining from mistakenly blocking valid programs. All but one of the products we follow scored a perfect 18 points, while Sophos came close with 17.5. The real loser in this test was Google’s own protection, which earned a big zero for protection.

So, launch your Kindle Fire app and go to the Apps tab from the Home screen or hit the Appstore icon.
