Amazon Is Hiring 3000 Remote Workers In 18 States
Earlier this month, Amazon announced plans to hire 3,000 remote workers in 18 states.
The job listing for customer service associates, posted on March 4th, indicates that the role pays $15 an hour, provides health care coverage after 90 days of employment and offers overtime pay.
Amazon is considering candidates who live in 18 states: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, Wisconsin and Wyoming.
The part-time work-from-home role “generally consists of 20 to 29 hours per week, with the expectations to work up to 60 hours a week if there is a customer need,” and specifies that workers cannot live in a zip code that is within 50 miles of an Amazon customer service site.
Brie Reynolds, senior career specialist at remote job site FlexJobs, says that this is one of the biggest hiring sprees of remote workers she has ever seen.
“Also they’re paying $15 an hour, which is at the higher end for the types of customer service roles that we typically see,” she tells CNBC Make It.
Reynolds says that it is also unique for this kind of part-time customer service role to provide health coverage, and that these kinds of positions can provide opportunities for upward mobility.
Employees Are Tracked By Robots And Watched Very Closely On Cameras
Employees in the warehouse are tracked for their entire shift. While at their work station, a computer measures how much they are packing and shipping on a timer, sending the information to a digitized file. Managers wander the warehouse to make sure employees are standing and working, and will punish sitting employees with write-ups that lead to termination. A centralized room with cameras watches the employees and the data produced by their trackers very closely, although an undercover investigation was able to capture exhausted employees sleeping standing up in their workstations. It is unknown if the employees photographed were caught and reprimanded, but one can imagine that more often than not, sleeping employees are dealt with harshly.
Some employees report squaring off with the robots that designate their workload, unable to perform to the same standards generated by the computers.

The breaks at Amazon are a contentious issue. As mentioned previously, employees are only given two breaks a day. It can be two 30 minute breaks, or one 30 minute with two 15 minute breaks, but this is complicated by the amount of time spent moving between the work site and break room.
It can take 5 minutes to walk quickly to the bathroom, but employees must also factor in the amount of time they need to wait in line.
To get into the break room they must pass through loss prevention metal detectors. Then they have to either wait in line to microwave their food or buy something from the vending machine. Then they have to leave to make it back to their post on time. While the company is innovative in terms of e-commerce and robots, one thing they severely lack is empathy.

Despite having so many employees, Amazon is still extremely diligent about who it hires. All applicants are expected to go through a number of different background checks in addition to passing their fairly rigorous application process.
The Amazon background checks will include:
- A full criminal background check

Lets explain the drug test first. Amazon will require you to permit them to take a mouth swab from you. This will usually happen after your in-person interview. If you want to see whether you would pass this test, you can order a home drug testing kit and run a test on yourself.
