Amazon’s Warehouses Churn Through Workers

The company’s fulfillment centers employ hundreds of thousands of people, offering pay and benefits that are competitive versus other retail-industry jobs. But the work can be grueling, some staff don’t stick around long, and there are growing efforts to unionize this modern blue-collar workforce.

Amazon warehouses are partly automated, using robots that zip around the shop floor fetching pallets of merchandise and bringing them to employees who pick the correct items and pack them for shipping. The company hires thousands of extra temporary workers each year to support a surge in orders during the holiday shopping period.

During the pandemic, online orders have jumped at an unusual time for Amazon. It prompted an unprecedented hiring spree last year but caused tension with workers concerned about entering warehouses that could spread the virus. These issues came to a head earlier this year, when employees at a fulfillment center in Bessemer, Alabama, voted on whether to form a union. The effort failed, but there’s a bigger union push gathering steam.

In his final shareholder letter as CEO earlier this year, Jeff Bezos defended Amazon’s working conditions, but said the company needed “to do a better job for our employees.”

SEATTLE Amazon has embarked on an extraordinary hiring binge this year, vacuuming up an average of 1,400 new workers a day and solidifying its power as online shopping becomes more entrenched in the coronavirus pandemic.

The hiring has taken place at Amazons headquarters in Seattle, at its hundreds of warehouses in rural communities and suburbs, and in countries such as India and Italy. Amazon added 427,300 employees between January and October, pushing its work force to more than 1.2 million people globally, up more than 50 percent from a year ago. The spree has accelerated since the onset of the pandemic, which has turbocharged Amazons business and made it a winner of the crisis. Starting in July, the company brought on about 350,000 employees, or 2,800 a day. Most have been warehouse workers, but Amazon has also hired software engineers and hardware specialists to power enterprises such as cloud computing, streaming entertainment and devices, which have boomed in the pandemic.

Sept 14 – Inc has increased its average starting wage in the United States to more than $18 an hour and plans to hire another 125,000 warehouse and transportation workers, an executive told Reuters.

The worlds largest online retailer has raised pay from an average of around $17 since May. In some locations, the company is giving signing bonuses of $3,000, said Dave Bozeman, vice president of Amazon Delivery Services, or triple what the company offered four months ago.

The fatter paycheck, which Reuters was first to report, shows how big employers are desperate to draw workers in an increasingly tight U.S. labor market. Fewer Americans are seeking jobless claims just as openings have hit a record in the reopening economy. read more

Bozeman attributed Amazon’s latest compensation increase to fierce competition. Amazon did not give exact figures, but a $1 raise on a $17-per-hour wage would amount to a hike of about 6%.

Amazon, now the second-biggest U.S. private employer, set a $15 an hour minimum wage in 2018. Walmart Inc recently touted average hourly wages of $16.40, while Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc said it would raise its minimum to $15 in October. read more

“It’s a tight labor market, and we’ve seen some of that as the entire industry is seeing,” said Bozeman, who spoke in an interview at a delivery station in Tukwila, Washington.

Paid Time Off Offered By Amazon

PTO days are days an employee may take off from work while still getting paid. Like most tech companies, Amazon provides paid time off to full-time and salaried employees, but they also offer PTO for part-time and hourly workers. The amount of PTO an employee can access at Amazon will vary based on salary vs hourly employment status, tenure in their position, and for hourly employees the number of weekly hours worked.

Hourly vs Salary PTO at Amazon

Hourly Amazon workers start with 5 PTO days per year and max out at 15 days after they have been employed at the company for 6 or more years. Amazon company policy around PTO is different for salaried workers. Their employment begins with 10 days of PTO. Paid Time Off at Amazon maxes out after 6 years for salaried employees.

Paid Vacation, Sick Days, and Personal Days

Amazon grants PTO vacation days in addition to the 7 standard federally recognized holidays.

  • New Years Day
  • Memorial Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Christmas Day
  • In addition to paid vacation days, Amazon may also provide additional paid Sick Days, based on State and local laws and regulations. Paid Personal Time may also be offered to employees, typically based on their tenure at Amazon.

Paid Time Off days expire and do not roll over at Amazon. If an employee doesnt use these days by the end of the year that they were granted, the PTO will be lost. PTO benefits can seem complicated, so check out for more information.

Amazon Added 400000 Jobs This Year To Handle The Surge In Online Shopping

SEATTLE Pandemic-fueled online shopping, coupled with the expected crush of holiday sales, has led Amazon to add 400,000 jobs this year, pushing its total employment over 1 million for the first time.

Those new jobs primarily in its warehouses and delivery operations come as the company continues to deal with a crush of orders from shoppers reluctant to buy goods in stores over concerns about the novel coronavirus. Amazon added 250,000 jobs in the three months through the end of September alone, Amazon finance chief Brian Olsavsky said in a call with journalists after the company reported its financial results Thursday. It added another 100,000 workers in October, and now has nearly 1.13 million employees worldwide, compared with 750,000 workers a year ago.

We are adding people at a rapid clip, Olsavsky said.

Thats still about half the 2.2 million workers that rival Walmart employs. Home Depot employs about 400,000 workers. At the same time, layoffs continue to mount at other major employers in the United States. ExxonMobil announced plans Thursday to slash 1,900 jobs from its U.S. workforce. Previously, Disney said it would lay off 28,000 workers and American Airlines cut 19,000 jobs.

Amazons latest wave of hiring comes after it already announced plans to hire 100,000 workers in March, the companys first move to add staff to handle the initial surge of pandemic-driven shopping.

Amazon Hiring 125000 Us Workers At Increased Average Hourly Wage

Like many firms in the United States, Amazon has seen increased demand for goods run up against labour market constraints, which has led the retail giant to entice workers with higher wages and bonuses.

E-commerce giant Amazon is planning to hire 125,000 more American workers at an average starting wage of more than $18 per hour and up to $22.50 per hour in some locations, the company announced Tuesday.

The 125,000 new jobs encompass full-time and part-time roles in the retail behemoths fulfilment and transportation operations, the company said in a press release, and are in addition to 40,000 new corporate and technology job openings Amazon announced earlier this month.

The company has seen record sales as Americans turned to online shopping out of necessity and boredom during the coronavirus pandemic. Amazon reported net income of $21.3bn last year.

Now, more than a year and a half after the first COVID-19 cases were reported in the United States, Amazons sales figures show Americans are still clicking add to cart. The company reported its net sales increased 27 percent to $113.1bn in the second quarter of 2021, compared to $88.9bn in the second quarter of 2020.

But like many firms in the US, Amazon has seen increased demand for goods bump up against labour constraints. Job openings in the country reached a record high of 10.9 million in July, US Bureau of Labor Statistics data shows, but many of those jobs arent being filled.
