Evil Strategy #: Amazon Sellers Can Change Your Product Photos

If you are an Amazon seller who has not registered your brand , you need to be very careful about other sellers changing out the photos on your listing.

Heres what sucks. When someone changes the photo on your listing, you dont even get a notification! So the only way to know that this has happened is to constantly watch your listings like a hawk.

If your picture gets switched out from under you, there are many bad things that could happen. For example in the worst case, an evil seller could change your photo to a completely different product or bundle.

So when a customer buys from you and notices that the product doesnt match the photo, they could complain and ding your account.

The best way to combat this is to register your brand. A lot of new sellers skip this step in the beginning because it requires a website and a trademark but if your product ends up taking off, you need to take care of this ASAP.

For us, weve had cases where our primary photo was swapped despite being brand registered. So today, we consistently monitor our account health for anomalies.

For example, if we see a lot of returns marked as does not match description or not as advertised, we take a closer look to make sure that theres no foul play involved.

Does Amazon Really Make Mistakes What Kind

Does Amazon Owe You Money?

Yes, they really do. When you consider the physical nature of the business, the size of Amazons fulfillment centers, and the number of people needed to store, pick, pack and ship products, then errors are bound to happen.

What kind of mistakes occur? Lets take a simple example. Say I send 100 cups into FBA, and over time I sell 20 of them. I know I should have 80 cups left, but my inventory is showing only 75. Something has clearly happened to those five cups maybe theyve been lost, damaged, improperly scanned, misplaced or even stolen. Those kind of things happen in warehouses of all sizes.

Would you notice that a few units of inventory are missing? Many sellers do not regularly audit and reconcile their inventory, so they wouldnt know anything is out of order. Often, the first they hear of it is when Amazon picks up on the error and takes action themselves.

Others mistakes that happen include:

  • Inbound items being damaged or lost by a shipper.
  • Customers asking for a return, and receiving a replacement but never sending the original item back.
  • Amazon picking up on a problem, but not refunding the correct amount.

Underhanded Tactics Evil Amazon Sellers Are Using To Cheat And Get Ahead

In just the past few years, Amazon has become such a cutthroat marketplace that unscrupulous sellers have been purposely trying to sabotage their competitors. As a result, most sellers are hush hush about their products and never talk about their winners in public.

In fact Amazon is so competitive today that if you have a product that is even mildly successful, you will eventually get piggybacked by multiple sellers if you havent been already.

Heres a sampling of some of the insidious activities that are happening on the platform right now.

The tactics mentioned below are evil and highly unethical. And the fact that people are using these strategies really makes me angry.

But you should be aware of whats happening out there in case it happens to you.

How To Collect Sales Tax On Amazon

Important to note: Amazon now collects sales tax on sellers behalf in most states with an Amazon fulfillment center. The below information applies to .

Now that you are registered to collect, your next step is to ensure you are collecting sales tax from your Amazon FBA customers.

Fortunately, Amazon has a very robust sales tax collection engine.

Once you tell it what you want to collect, it will collect the right rate, even keeping up with complicated concepts like whether a state is origin-based or destination-based, or if a sales tax rate has changed.

It will also allow you to add product tax codes so you charge the right amount of sales tax on items like groceries and clothing, and allow you to choose whether or not you charge sale tax on shipping and gift wrapping.

Keep in mind that Amazon charges 2.9% of each transaction in order to collect sales tax.

The alternative, however, is not to collect sales tax from your Amazon customers and to instead pay out of your profits.

Evil Strategy #: Amazon Sellers Can Tie Up All Of Your Inventory

Its quite possible that I was a victim of this first strategy during the holiday season last year. In November, a customer purchased a large quantity of product which put us out of stock of this one particular SKU.

While my wife and I were thrilled at receiving such a large order, we knew that we would not be able to replenish the stock in time to meet the rest of the holiday demand.

No big deal, we thought to ourselves. It was only 1 product. But guess what happened? A seller who was piggybacking our product got the buy box because we were out of stock.

And then about 4 weeks later, a substantial portion of that large order was returned.

So not only did we miss out on a lot of holiday sales for that particular product because we were out of stock, but we didnt make much money either because the large order was returned!

Looking back, we cant really prove whether the buyer was in cahoots with the piggybacker to purposely put us out of stock, but I learned from my friend that there are groups out there who do this on purpose!!!

Heres the strategy that the evil Amazon sellers are employing.

First off, they buy all of your inventory to steal the buy box. Then they sell your exact same goods on the same Amazon listing and on EBay.

Finally at the end of the season, they return the excess inventory!

A Real Life Horror Story Selling On Amazon

My friend Kevin Williams was making close to 8 figures selling on Amazon with his cleaning brushes when Chinese sellers decided to copy his entire product line.

And when I say copy, they made an EXACT duplicate of his cleaning brush with inferior materials, took his EXACT packaging and sold it under his listing at half the price.

Because the Chinese sellers price was significantly lower than his, they got the buy box and stole all of his sales.

Even worse, because the Chinese knockoff was a piece of junk, angry buyers started leaving 1 star reviews which basically destroyed his entire business.

For the next year and half, Kevin would invest over a million dollars and constant headache trying to fight off these sellers because Amazon does not allow you to easily shut down the copycats.

If you want to hear his story first hand, I had the pleasure of having Kevin on my podcast which you can listen to below.

Will Canada Become A Superpower

With a population of only 35 million , a famously frigid climate and a below-replacement fertility rate, Canada would seem an unlikely candidate to become a superpower. In terms of natural resources, Canada is almost unmatched. In terms of renewable freshwater, Canada is exceeded only by the U.S. and Brazil.

What Amazon Did Wrong

They increased the height by almost double, from 4 inches to 7.59 inches, and they increased the width from 7.5 inches to 9.89 inches.

I went back to the profitability calculator in Helium 10 to check to see if that made a difference with the FBA fees.

First, I checked what Amazon was charging me at the time:

I was being charged an FBA fee of $7.32 per unit. Next, I put the original dimensions into the same profitability calculator.

The fee would have been only $5.80! Since November we have sold 2000 coffin shelves. If you multiply that out, that means that Amazon was charging me $1.52 more per unit on shipping, for a whopping total of $3,000!!!

Before I tell you how I got money back, allow me to bring attention to more of my stupidity.

How Amazon Sales Tax Is Calculated And Assessed

Does Amazon Owe You Money?

The laws surrounding online sales taxes vary among states. For example, in Colorado, purchases must include a 2.9% sales tax, which is much lower than in Illinois, which charges a 6.25% base rate plus whatever municipalities or cities charge, often 1% extra. Of course, consumers pay the tax, not Amazon, but the company must devote time and resources to the collection process.
