Does Amazon Sell Used Stuff

Don't Miss

Getting Reviews + Review Rules

Selling Used Items on Amazon FBA is BIG MONEY!

Reviews are an integral part of the buying experience on Amazon.

Getting more reviews on your products will be very important if you are selling your own branded products. If you are selling existing products that already have listings on Amazon, then getting more product reviews will not be as important of a process.Amazon has some very strict guidelines in place regarding reviews. Reviews have been abused significantly in the past, so Amazon has taken fairly drastic action to remedy the problem. As a result, getting reviews is not something you want to be bending the rules on.Heres a screenshot of current Review Policies:

Getting reviews without breaking Amazons rules ultimately boils down to getting sales and then requesting those buyers to leave a review for your product.

The main inputs you can influence here are the number of sales that you get on Amazon and the way that you word your requests to leave feedback.

A certain percentage of all buyers will leave feedback, so getting reviews is a function of getting enough sales.

Many sellers when they are launching a new product on Amazon will sell the products for a very discounted price to get initial sales. Doing this will typically get a batch of reviews coming in.

Other programs you can look into include the Amazon Vine Program, and the Amazon Early Reviewer Program. These are legitimate ways to get early reviews on your products.

Free Up Your Time To Work On Other Aspects Of Your Business

As an online seller, youll always have to focus on keeping the appropriate amount of stock, running your business efficiently, and finding new products to sell. As your volume increases, it gets harder to run a tight ship. Although youll hire help for every aspect of your operation, removing shipping and customer returns from your to-do list will free you up to focus on efficiency and increasing your product lines.

How To Increase Sales On Amazon

The strategies you can use to increase your sales on Amazon fall into two categories:

  • Things you can do that generate quick results.
  • Things you can do that generate results over time.
  • While you may look at those options and think youd much rather focus on the quick results, the long-term strategies are the ones that drive the biggest gains over time. So a healthy mix of both types of strategies is called for.

    Increasing Amazon Sales Quickly

Here are some of the top ways you can increase your Amazon sales in the near-term:

    • Upgrade to a Professional account
    • Use a repricing tool to ensure competitive pricing
    • Leverage FBA to offer Prime benefits on orders
    • Optimize product listings
    • Run a product promotion
    • Set up a Sponsored Product Ad

All of these can give a quick boost to sales and should be a part of your ongoing strategy.

Long-term Strategies for Increasing Amazon Sales

The strategies discussed above can give a boost to your existing sales, but they generally arent going to be the difference between getting a few sales a month and building a business that replaces your job.

The three biggest strategies and principles to scaling your Amazon to the point that it is generating 6+ figures a year are:

  • Consistent reinvestment over time
  • Expanding your sourcing strategies + product offerings
  • Automation + delegation

What Do Liquidation Sales Tell Us About Online Retail

To be clear, were quite literally talking about tons of inventory passing through these liquidators. According to Yahoo Finances reporting, online retailers may have return rates of up to 30 percent. For clothing, that can climb to 40 percent.

Liquidity Services, one liquidation company to which Amazon sells, has made sales totaling $626.4 million in the last fiscal year, according to The Atlantic. The company spent just $33.7 million on Amazon liquidation inventory. They have nearly 3.4 million registered buyers.

Those numbers suggest that Amazon is liquidating billions of dollars worth of inventory every year. That means Amazon is making enough sales to turn a handsome profit even when many items are returned and refunded. The e-commerce giant doesnt need to try to re-list these items, although a handful of used products do end up on, a discounted sales arm of Amazon.

Some of those savings come, undoubtedly, from the fact that Amazon makes customers assume shipping costs for returns. Amazon already loses a ton of money on free shipping, but theyve won the loyalty of millions upon millions of people asking customers to pay for returns isnt going to lose them any future sales.

Amazon has succeeded in part because it operates at scale. Hugely profitable parts of its business can subsidize more expensive parts, like shipping. And thats why Amazon is Amazon, and so many other online sellers are still scrambling to establish their niches outside it.

    Amazons Muddy Used Market

    What to Sell on Amazon

Amazon isnt really designed to sell secondhand products. For example, I purchased a used Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 on the site, and there werent any photos of the actual product. There was only a short text description of the items condition, as shown below.

Thankfully, third-party sellers on Amazon do have ratings, so you can make sure youre buying from a reliable source. The only other information youll see, however, is the condition of the item and a brief description of the item.

On eBay and Craigslist, sellers can upload photos so buyers can actually see the condition of the item. This is helpful because a description like minor cosmetic imperfection could mean a lot of things. This is why not being able to actually see what youre buying on Amazon is frustrating.

The process for ordering a used item is the same as ordering anything else on Amazon. There are some differences afterward, though. Items that arent shipped by Amazon are ineligible for Amazons customer service. This means youre at the mercy of the third-party seller if you want a refund. The good news is Amazon does offer some protection under its A-Z Guarantee.

Generally, Amazon is a safe, reliable place to purchase used products, but, just like eBay, theres always some risk involved. For example, some third-party sellers have been caught selling counterfeit products.

If youre purchasing anything that isnt under Amazons umbrella, just do so with caution.

The Key To Success Is Starting With Existing Products And Brands

This is why we recommend that beginners start with selling existing products from existing brands.

The two main strategies for sourcing existing products to sell on Amazon are retail arbitrage and wholesale.

When building an online retail business, we recommend starting with flipping and arbitrage then moving up to wholesale when you have more capital and experience on the Amazon platform. A complete novice can be ready to try wholesale in less than a year, weve helped people do it in just a few months.

We call this approach to building your business the Stairway to 7 Figures:

Anyone can follow this strategy and earn a profit from the very beginning, as opposed to needing to invest thousands of dollars just to get something to try to sell.

For this, you just need a few things to sell and the drive to follow through.

We recommend that people start by taking on our Arbitrage Accelerator Challenge to earn $250 or more in your first 30 days. From there, retail arbitrage can be scaled to earning you thousands a month in profit.

If you doubt this is possible, just remember that my business sold millions worth of retail arbitrage products in 2020, and you can use the exact same strategies that we use.

Once youve used arbitrage to get your first sales and gain familiarity with the Amazon marketplace, we recommend moving on to wholesale sourcing. Wholesale now accounts for about 65% of our sales .

General Marketplaces For Selling Used Stuff Online

    Amazon

With such a ripe harvest of secondhand profit to be made, theres no way that the largest marketplace on the planet would miss out on tilling those fields.

However, Amazons individual seller program is not built to be a garage sale substitute, and the standards of quality are high. This means you cant just list your used stuff with some haphazard smartphone pictures like you would on eBay, craigslist, or Facebook marketplace.

Instead, consider the Fulfillment by Amazon program as a viable vehicle for selling your used stuff.

The program is designed for individual sellers who need 3rd-party support from Amazon, but you can use it as a means to sell your used items online.

On most Amazon product pages, underneath the description, youll see a small link that reads something like: New & Used from $90 + FREE shipping.

Heres how you can get listed in those spots: , gather your used items, box them, and document each item in the box with its UPC, ISBN, or ASIN. Then, follow Amazons prompts for shipping. Its that simple.

You will pay a fee to compensate Amazon for fulfilling, listing, and providing customer support on your items.

Processing your items takes time, and perhaps a few dollars in packaging materials. For this reason, youll want to make sure whatever youre selling is worth at least $10-20. Otherwise, you may find yourself losing money in the process.

For items of a lesser value, local platforms like Facebook Marketplace or eBay are better choices.

Evil Strategy #: Amazon Sellers Can Trademark Your Amazon Account Name

Most serious sellers on Amazon trademark their brand name so they can enroll in . But many sellers dont bother to trademark their Amazon seller account name.

For example, your Amazon account might be called XYZ Corp. And under XYZ Corp, you might sell 2 brands, Brand A and Brand B. Most people trademark Brand A and Brand Bbut dont bother trademarking XYZ Corp

Right now, malicious sellers are trademarking other peoples Amazon account names and then completely taking over their accounts.

In a recent article on The Verge, a poor seller named Harris fell victim to this scheme. The hijacker planned his attack for over a year, took his trademark to Amazon and registered it.

Once the trademark was obtained, the evil seller instantly held the power to kick Harris off his own listings and control his account.

Evil Strategy #: Amazon Sellers Can Change Your Product Photos

A Tip to Make More Money Selling Used Items on Amazon FBA

If you are an Amazon seller who has not registered your brand , you need to be very careful about other sellers changing out the photos on your listing.

Heres what sucks. When someone changes the photo on your listing, you dont even get a notification! So the only way to know that this has happened is to constantly watch your listings like a hawk.

If your picture gets switched out from under you, there are many bad things that could happen. For example in the worst case, an evil seller could change your photo to a completely different product or bundle.

So when a customer buys from you and notices that the product doesnt match the photo, they could complain and ding your account.

The best way to combat this is to register your brand. A lot of new sellers skip this step in the beginning because it requires a website and a trademark but if your product ends up taking off, you need to take care of this ASAP.

Who Owns And Ships Amazon Products

How to Make Money from Amazon

On the product listing it will show you who provides the shipping. Fulfilled by Amazon also known as Prime Shipping or , means that the product has been stored at an Amazon warehouse and will ship from there.

A third party seller who makes a sale then gets the item picked and packed from the nearest Amazon fulfillment center who will then ship it to the customer. Amazon takes care of its shipping with its own shipping label so you dont need to worry about it.

However, for this service Amazon is paid a part in any proceeds from the sale. You will find some things on Amazon that aren’t shipped or sold by amazon and just like eBay, entrepreneurs can without the company being involved in sales or delivery. There are a few steps to follow once you have your products home and youre ready to send them off to Amazon.

Jessica outlined her process as follows:

    • Scan the products and tell Amazon what you have to send them.
    • Tell Amazon what price you want to sell your products for. Jessica said the dont usually undercut the current buy box seller.
    • You will be asked some questions about the products as you add them to a shipping plan.
    • You can then label the products yourself, or Amazon will do it for a small fee.
    • Jessica prints FNSKU codes and covers up the original barcodes, this identifies the products as hers when sold.
    • Polybag any products with open faces, bubble wrap any breakable items.
    • Add everything into a box, make a note of the weight, and ship it to the distribution center Amazon tells you to.

Where Do The Returned Items Go

Selling Used Items on Amazon FBA

The items go to a liquidation site that also could resell Walmart returns along with other stores. What is a liquidation site? Its where pallets in bulk. At these sites, the products are often sorted by category such as home, beauty, construction or technology. These categories allow companies or individuals to sort and watch liquidation sites for products they need. For example, this could be a great deal for an interior design company looking for surplus tools etc. These items can be bought in bulk for a fraction of the previous cost.

One crazy part about liquidation sites is that some boxes of stuff contain a collection of items that fall within a category like technology. This might be full of half-useful items for your situation and the other half not at all useful, but could add up to $5,000 worth of things. You could end up bidding and paying $200 for a box full of things to resell or use.
