What Do Liquidation Sales Tell Us About Online Retail
To be clear, were quite literally talking about tons of inventory passing through these liquidators. According to Yahoo Finances reporting, online retailers may have return rates of up to 30 percent. For clothing, that can climb to 40 percent.
Liquidity Services, one liquidation company to which Amazon sells, has made sales totaling $626.4 million in the last fiscal year, according to The Atlantic. The company spent just $33.7 million on Amazon liquidation inventory. They have nearly 3.4 million registered buyers.
Those numbers suggest that Amazon is liquidating billions of dollars worth of inventory every year. That means Amazon is making enough sales to turn a handsome profit even when many items are returned and refunded. The e-commerce giant doesnt need to try to re-list these items, although a handful of used products do end up on, a discounted sales arm of Amazon.
Some of those savings come, undoubtedly, from the fact that Amazon makes customers assume shipping costs for returns. Amazon already loses a ton of money on free shipping, but theyve won the loyalty of millions upon millions of people asking customers to pay for returns isnt going to lose them any future sales.
Amazon has succeeded in part because it operates at scale. Hugely profitable parts of its business can subsidize more expensive parts, like shipping. And thats why Amazon is Amazon, and so many other online sellers are still scrambling to establish their niches outside it.
Amazons Muddy Used Market
Amazon isnt really designed to sell secondhand products. For example, I purchased a used Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 on the site, and there werent any photos of the actual product. There was only a short text description of the items condition, as shown below.
Thankfully, third-party sellers on Amazon do have ratings, so you can make sure youre buying from a reliable source. The only other information youll see, however, is the condition of the item and a brief description of the item.
On eBay and Craigslist, sellers can upload photos so buyers can actually see the condition of the item. This is helpful because a description like minor cosmetic imperfection could mean a lot of things. This is why not being able to actually see what youre buying on Amazon is frustrating.
The process for ordering a used item is the same as ordering anything else on Amazon. There are some differences afterward, though. Items that arent shipped by Amazon are ineligible for Amazons customer service. This means youre at the mercy of the third-party seller if you want a refund. The good news is Amazon does offer some protection under its A-Z Guarantee.
Generally, Amazon is a safe, reliable place to purchase used products, but, just like eBay, theres always some risk involved. For example, some third-party sellers have been caught selling counterfeit products.

Evil Strategy #: Amazon Sellers Can Change Your Product Photos
If you are an Amazon seller who has not registered your brand , you need to be very careful about other sellers changing out the photos on your listing.
Heres what sucks. When someone changes the photo on your listing, you dont even get a notification! So the only way to know that this has happened is to constantly watch your listings like a hawk.
If your picture gets switched out from under you, there are many bad things that could happen. For example in the worst case, an evil seller could change your photo to a completely different product or bundle.
So when a customer buys from you and notices that the product doesnt match the photo, they could complain and ding your account.
The best way to combat this is to register your brand. A lot of new sellers skip this step in the beginning because it requires a website and a trademark but if your product ends up taking off, you need to take care of this ASAP.

What Prep Do You Do Before Sending Products To Amazon
There are a few steps to follow once you have your products home and youre ready to send them off to Amazon.
Jessica outlined her process as follows:
- Scan the products and tell Amazon what you have to send them.
- Tell Amazon what price you want to sell your products for. Jessica said the dont usually undercut the current buy box seller.
- You will be asked some questions about the products as you add them to a shipping plan.

- Polybag any products with open faces, bubble wrap any breakable items.

Where Do The Returned Items Go
The items go to a liquidation site that also could resell Walmart returns along with other stores. What is a liquidation site? Its where pallets in bulk. At these sites, the products are often sorted by category such as home, beauty, construction or technology. These categories allow companies or individuals to sort and watch liquidation sites for products they need. For example, this could be a great deal for an interior design company looking for surplus tools etc. These items can be bought in bulk for a fraction of the previous cost.
One crazy part about liquidation sites is that some boxes of stuff contain a collection of items that fall within a category like technology. This might be full of half-useful items for your situation and the other half not at all useful, but could add up to $5,000 worth of things. You could end up bidding and paying $200 for a box full of things to resell or use.
