If you opt for the pricier Plus model, you can prop it on the included wireless charging dock to turn your tablet into an Echo Show-like device.
One awesome use case for show mode is its amazing utility in the kitchen ask Alexa for a taco recipe, for example, and a carousel of delicious recipes from different websites will appear. Alexa will also walk you through the instructions for the selected recipe step-by-step.
While your fingers are sullied with remnants of pico de gallo, you can command Alexa to turn on some music while you make your tacos. On top of that, you can even make hands-free calls to anyone on your contact list.
These examples are just the tip of the iceberg theres so much more that you can do with Show Mode and Alexa.

The Amazon Fire HD 8 features two 2MP cameras: one in the front and one in the rear.
As aforementioned, if youd like to use the cameras, youll have to hold the slate in landscape mode. The Fire HD 8s picture quality is nothing to write home about. The trim around my doorway is a rich, cherrywood color, but on both cameras, it looked like a dull brown.
The cameras also struggled with reproducing textures my burgundy, snake-skin satchel looked more like a solid, dark-red bag.
However, the cameras are still satisfactory. They wont help you create an eye-catching Instagram profile nor an award-winning YouTube channel, but if you need to take a quick snapshot and the Fire HD 8 is the closest device within reach this Amazon slate will do the job.

Using Sd Cards As Internal Storage
Once your SD card has been formatted for use as internal storage, youll be greeted by a screen asking if you would like to Move content to storage device.
This will free up internal storage space by transferring data such as eBooks, photos, videos, documents, and other files to the SD card. But this step will not transfer any installed apps to your SD card. Youll have to do that manually, as described below.
During the file transfer process, which can take some time, certain apps may not work. Amazon also advises against removing the SD card and suggests keeping your tablet charged.
If youd prefer to move your content later, or have more control over which content is moved, you can tap the Move Content Later option rather than the button marked Move Content.
Whether you move your content or not, you can now open the Settings app and go to the Storage option described in the section above. But this time youll see a different set of options.
Rather than toggles to choose which content is downloaded and stored on an SD card automatically, you have the following options:
- Move content to Internal Storage .
- Move Apps to SD Card
- Format as Portable Storage
In the screenshot above youll notice that 8 apps on my tablet are available to be moved. But thats just a fraction of all the apps on my tablet.
One thing to keep in mind before transferring your apps is that while moving them to external storage is a 1-click process, transferring them back to internal storage is not.

As I mentioned earlier, the Fire HD 8s design changes are relatively minor, but it is possible to spot a few subtle differences if you look hard enough. Amazons budget tablet is still encased in a tough textured plastic with large screen-bordering bezels, but Amazon has clearly designed this new tablet to be used in landscape orientation, rather than the portrait-friendly design of the previous model.
The 2-megapixel selfie camera now sits above one of the screens long edges, and the power button, volume rocker and 3.5mm headphone socket are located to the right. This area of the tablet also includes the new USB-C port. This charges the tablet from zero to full in less than five hours, which is still rather slow. A pair of speakers point upwards on the top edge, and the microSD slot, which can take cards up to 1TB in capacity, is on the bottom.
This is a cheap tablet, so you shouldnt expect luxurious finishes and materials, but the Fire HD 8 remains a well-made, robust-feeling device. Its lightweight at only 355g, doesnt flex or bend under considerable pressure, and its well built, with only a slim gap separating the glass-topped screen and plastic backing. The Fire HD 8 can be picked up in a choice of four pastel colours: black, plum, twilight blue and white.

One big design difference Ive noticed with this current-gen Fire HD 8 tablet is its awkwardly placed camera.
