Amazon Launches Visalia Fulfillment Center Hiring 200 More Full
Amazon has launched its 1.3 million-square-foot fulfillment center in Visalia’s Industrial Park and is on a hiring spree.
The e-commerce giant opened its first Visalia facility on Aug. 15 and has hired about 1,000 employees so far, General Manager Carlos Avelar said. The company is accepting applications for 200 additional full-time positions moving into the busy holiday season.
Employees start at $15.50 an hour and receive benefits including paid time off and dental insurance. Employees who provide proof of a COVID-19 vaccination will get a $100 hiring bonus.
Interested candidates can apply online at
Unlike other Amazon warehouses in Bakersfield and Fresno, the Visalia center handles larger items. It’s the only facility of its kind in the southern and central San Joaquin Valley, Avelar said.
“Visalia is growing tremendously as a city itself, and it’s in a prime location for Amazon to serve our customers in a timely manner,” he said. “We are the only building of this type in a 2.5-hour distance. Everything from a box of diapers up to patio umbrellas is packaged and prepared here.”
Despite rumors that a separate facility for smaller items could come to Visalia, nothing is official yet, he added.
Last year, UPS opened a 425,000-square-foot distribution hub across the street from Amazon. As COVID-19 drives more customers to shop online, the Visalia Industrial Park stands to be a big beneficiary.

El Paso Facility Smaller Than Projected In Developer’s Document
In the planned, El Paso fulfillment center, employees will work alongside Amazon robotics to pick, pack and ship small items including books, electronics, and toys to its online customers, the companys statement reported.
The size of the facility is much smaller than the 2.6 million square-foot center described in a document filed with a Texas agency by Hillwood, a large Dallas real estate company developing the site for Amazon. That document, which kept Amazon’s name secret, also listed the cost of the project at $191.7 million.
The Borderplexs Barela said during the virtual news conference that the size of the center is smaller than some of Amazons distribution centers, but, he said, its still a massive project. And the facility “has potential to grow down the road,” he said.
No project cost estimates were released, but Barela said the Amazon project will be one of the areas largest construction projects since Union Pacific Railroad built its huge rail facility in Santa Teresa, New Mexico, near El Pasos West Side. That facility, which opened in 2014, cost $400 million, El Paso Times archives show.

Working In The Warehouse
The Amazon jobs that have gotten the most media attention have been those at the companys fulfillment centers, which is its nickname for warehouses. Amazon has about 75 huge fulfillment centers in North America that employ more than 125,000 full-time workers.
The tech company utilizes a variety of building types for fulfillment centers, and its largest ones are around 800,000 square feet in size. Typically, these warehouses employ about 1,500 full-time associates. In some fulfillment centers, Amazon employees work alongside robots that help sort, pick, and transport packages.
Amazon increased its minimum wage in late 2018, raising the rate to $15 per hour. The new wage covers full-time, part-time, temporary, and seasonal positions for about 350,000 employees who work in warehouses, customer service, and even at the newly acquired Whole Foods stores.
Full-time employees at Amazon also receive a generous benefits package, including medical, dental, and vision insurance, a 401-retirement plan, and up to 20 weeks of paid maternal or paternal leave.
Sounds like a sweet deal, right? The pay may be good, and the benefits may be comprehensive. Still, many reports from media sources and ex-Amazon employees say working in a fulfillment center is dangerous and intense.

Ca 1st To Set Quota Limits For Amazon Mega
Last week, California became the first to bar mega-retailers from firing warehouse workers for missing quotas that interfere with bathroom and rest breaks.
The measure also bars Amazon, the online retail giant, and similar companies from disciplining workers for following health and safety laws and allows employees to sue to suspend unsafe quotas or reverse retaliation. The bill applies to all warehouse distribution centers, though proponents were driven by Amazons dominance.
We cannot allow corporations to put profit over people, Gov. Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, said in a news release announcing he had signed the law.
The law, AB 701, was authored by Democratic Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez, a lawyer and former labor leader. She accused Amazon of disciplining warehouse workers at the direction of an algorithm that tracks employees activities and can determine that anything not directly related to moving packages is off-task.
Amazon is pushing workers to risk their bodies for next-day delivery, while they cant so much as use the restroom without fearing retaliation, Gonzalez said when the Legislature passed her bill.
Amazon did not respond for requests for comment on her legislation or allegations. The law gives large warehouse employers 30 days to disclose quotas to employees.
