The Sleepy Retail Industry Has Woken Up
Things are changing outside of Whole Foods, too. The industry is not only scared by the marriage of Whole Foods and Amazon, it is also now facing the infiltration of European competitors Aldi and Lidl, discount grocers that are attacking traditional grocery stores on price.
Kroger’s stock dropped from $31 to $22 a share when the Whole Foods deal was announced. It now trades at $24, a level that many industry sources say represents a new normal.
In the past year, grocery stores have slowed their new store growth and instead focused on acquisitions of technology or platforms. Walmart bought Indian e-commerce company Flipkart, Target bought delivery service Shipt, Kroger invested in British online supermarket Ocado and bought meal kit company Home Chef, and Albertsons also bought a meal kit company, Plated.
Still, these retailers are at a disadvantage when it comes to technology investments. Unlike Amazon’s shareholders, investors in retail companies punish retailers when their investments are unprofitable or take longer to pan out.
Retailers are also increasingly focused on fresh food, prepared food and even restaurants to draw shoppers to their stores. There’s a big push for private label brands, which are more profitable for the stores.

Whole Foods Market Launches Free Grocery Pickup At All Stores
Russell Redman 1 | Oct 21, 2020
Whole Foods Market has started offering free one-hour grocery pickup from any of its U.S. stores for members of Amazons Prime customer benefits program.
Parent company Amazon said Wednesday that Whole Foods pickup service carries no charge for Prime customers placing orders of $35 or more, including fresh produce, meat and seafood plus everyday grocery and household staples, locally sourced products and holiday favorites. The Austin, Texas-based specialty grocer operates 487 U.S. stores.

Use of online grocery pickup has escalated since the COVID-19 outbreak, but the service stands to become a regular solution for many customers, Amazon noted. The company said more than 40% of Whole Foods monthly pickup orders come from customers trying the service for the first time and, according to recent findings from Global Data Research, nearly 68% of consumers plan to keep using curbside pickup post-pandemic.
Amazon accelerated the rollout of curbside pickup at Whole Foods only recently, driven by demand amid the pandemic. In April, the company said it had extended the service from about 80 Whole Foods stores to more than 150 over several weeks.
Grocery pickup in an hour is free for Amazon Prime members on orders of at least $35 but carries a $4.99 fee for orders to be ready in 30 minutes.
Shop The Frequent Sales
At any given Whole Foods, you may be able to find weeklong national sales on top of weekend and one-day flash sales that vary by region and even by store. Some items will retain a promotional price for two weeks or even a month, says Flickinger. Recent sales that caught our eye included ground bison for $8 a pound and organic seedless grapes for $2.49 a pound . Speaking of the produce aisle, Whole Foods tends to carry premier brands, such as Driscoll’s berries, so when those go on sale, “the prices stand out,” says Flickinger.
To keep abreast of new promotions, grab the sales flyer for your local store. If you’re an Amazon Prime member, you can also sign up for the weekly e-mail newsletter for special offers and recipes.

It’s Also Begun To Tackle The Challenge Of Fresh Food Delivery Again
Through Whole Foods stores, Amazon has renewed efforts to deliver fresh food a service that has been a struggle for it in the past. Unlike shampoo or paper towels, fresh food can spoil quickly. It is costly and complicated to deliver. It is expensive to store. Those challenges plagued its efforts with prior delivery service, Amazon Fresh.
Whole Foods’ stores provide a more cost-effective way to take care of fresh food, while also providing a launching pad to transport those groceries.
Shoppers are more likely to order and trust fresh food and meat from a retailer branded Whole Foods than they are from one named Amazon.
How Far Does Whole Foods Deliver
Whole Foods does not specify a radius for deliveries. However, you can head to the Amazon website and type in your zip code. Amazon will then alert you if you have any Whole Foods close enough to qualify for the delivery service.
If you dont qualify for delivery because you are located too far from your nearest store, you can still order online and pick your groceries up in-store.
This way, they are already bagged and ready to go when you arrive, which will save you time on your shopping trip.

How Whole Foods Became The Organic Giant
- Read in app
Led by co-founder John Mackey, Whole Foods Market quickly grew from a small store in Austin, Tex., to the largest natural-foods supermarket chain in the United States. But as organic foods grew in popularity, Whole Foods was squeezed by lower-cost grocery rivals.
1978: Born in Austin
Mr. Mackey, 25, co-founded Safer Way Natural Foods, a 2,000-square-foot store in Austin, Tex., with his then girlfriend.
1980: First Whole Foods Market
Mr. Mackey joined his rival Clarksville Natural Grocery to open the first Whole Foods Market, with 19 employees. A year later, the store was nearly destroyed in a flood. It reopened within a month thanks to the rebuilding efforts of employees and Austin residents.
1984: Expansion Begins
The companys expansion began with the opening of a store in Houston. Within a year, Whole Foods Market had about 600 workers.
1988: Beyond the Lone Star State
Whole Foods Market expanded outside of Texas with the acquisition of the similarly named Whole Food Company of New Orleans. It was the companys sixth store. Whole Foodss early growth came largely from mergers and acquisitions.
1992: From Austin to Wall Street
Now operating 12 stores in Texas, California, North Carolina and Louisiana, Whole Foods Market went public. The prospectus stated that a significant segment of the population now attributes added value to high quality natural food.

Amazon Has Found A Treasure Trove Of Data
It’s beginning to become more clear why Amazon bought Whole Foods. For one, it’s getting its hands on lots of shopping data, which will come in handy as Amazon expands its online grocery business and private label offerings.
As Amazon combines its Prime service and Whole Foods shopping experience, it’s getting even more insight into how the same person shops on and offline. That means a better ability to target ads and promotions than a grocer typically is able to. Because many shoppers still browse groceries online but shop in person, this combination threatens to be particularly powerful.

What Time Of Day Are Deliveries Available
The answer is still a little fuzzy on this one.
2-hour deliveries are basically available during Whole Foods store hours, which are 8 a.m. to 10 p.m..
But dont expect a delivery much before 10 a.m. if you order first thing in the morning.
