According to Donald, working in the Trailer Docking and Releasing area of a warehouse is a critical position. âDepending on the facility, the trailer yard can have anywhere from 20 to hundreds of trailers in them. is an active yard, and safety precautions are a must,â Donald says. He explains that the TDR work, including the safety checklist, is done through a Kindle app. But one employee can’t do it alone.
âYou always need another person to go with you when you do TDRs because you need someone to be a spotter,â Donald says. âYou enter a very active trailer yard, and while one person is doing the work on the Kindle, the other person is there to spot so that they do not get hit with a trailer or a truck. If you go into a trailer yard without a spotter, you are instantly terminated, as this is a severe safety hazard.â

Some Area Amazon Warehouse Workers Asking For Pay Raises And Safer Working Conditions
ST. PETERS, Mo. – Concerns of low pay, dangerous working conditions, and more are coming from workers at a local Amazon Warehouse. News 4 first heard similar concerns after a tornado ripped through the Edwardsville location last December, killing six people. Now, St. Peters employees are saying its time for change for all Metro workers.
Its considered to be one of the largest companies in the world, and their employees are getting treated like crap. So, we have to speak out, we have to reach forward, George Davis said.
Davis has worked at STL8s St. Peters warehouse for more than two years now. He said the bad working conditions and minimal pay have existed the entire time hes worked there. However now, he and dozens of other workers arent staying silent any longer.
We have loose wires and stuff like that at work. Its not safe to work that way. We have little bitty spaces to drive our forklifts. Everyone there is going to have an accident because its so small and its very unsafe, Davis said.
Davis said hes been struggling with his salary for years now. He said he believes Amazon should pay their employees better for the amount of work theyre doing, especially in a competitive job market like were seeing today. Another Amazon worker we talked to said shes struggling to feed her kids and pay her bills.
Workers said theyre hoping for a productive conversation among them, management and Amazon corporate after they hold a press conference at 8 a.m. Wednesday.
Amazon Warehouse Employees Have Robots For Co
If you find some of your co-workers a little standoffish, be glad youâre not stationed in an Amazon warehouse. An increasing number of the sites are moving to automated robots to take the burden off pickers, who can walk up to 15 miles a day searching the cavernous buildings for ordered items. Massive machines dubbed Kivas reverse that task, bringing towering eight-foot pods full of items to a pickerâs workstation after theyâve been loaded by employees known as stowers.
âThe robots are bringing the pods, these tall yellow pods that are coded with bins,â Kyle says. âThere are eight different levels and columns with hundreds of items. The pod has four sides and can weigh up to 750 pounds. Before it comes to your station, itâs facing you with the side that has the item. If it has to turn, it will move, come back, and rotate.â
Kyle says proficient pickers who meet a quota can sometimes get their name on a robot. But that would require picking roughly 5000 items in one 10-hour shift.

Long Hours For Delivery Drivers
Amazon Logistics delivers about 2.5 billion packages per year in the U.S., according to a Morgan Stanley report, which is almost as much as FedEx and UPS. The tech company relies on more than 800 delivery service partners who manage nearly 75,000 drivers to deliver all these packages.
The company has about 100 million Amazon Prime members, who get faster shipping times as part of its membership. Amazon created a Flex program in 2015 to hire contract drivers to keep up with the demand in shipments.
The only requirements to become an Amazon Flex driver is to be over 21 years old with a drivers license, auto insurance, own at least a midsized sedan, and clear a basic background check.
Amazon advertises that Flex drivers can make between $18 and $25 per hour, but it generally depends on each shift. In a recent CNBC report, a journalist tagged along with a Flex driver in the San Francisco area who delivered about 46 packages in three-and-a-half hours and made $105.
As a Flex driver, youre required to use their own cars and pay for their own gas, tolls, and vehicle maintenance. They use an app to sign up for a block of time and then go to a fulfillment center to pick up packages. Depending on how long it takes to deliver all the packages, some drivers say the gig work isnt worthwhile, especially if you live in a metro area with lots of traffic congestion.

Most jobs at Amazon warehouses are those of pickers and packers. Pickers pull merchandise off storage shelves and place them in bins, then put the bins on conveyor belts to be taken to the packers. The packers package up the products, slap a label on them and put them on another conveyor belt to be taken to a waiting truck.
Emily Guendelsberger, a journalist, took a pre-Christmas job at Amazon in 2015 after the newspaper she worked for in Philadelphia closed. She lasted a month. But before she quit, it gave her enough experience to write one of the few first-hand accounts of what its like to work in an Amazon warehouse.
At first, she said, she got a certain pleasure from all the running around she was doing as a picker at the 25-acre Amazon fulfillment center outside Louisville, Kentucky.
A GPS-enabled, hand-held scanner would tell her what items to pull off the shelves, where to find them and then begin a countdown of the time she was allowed to complete the task. She would place the items in a yellow bin, known as a tote, that she would push around with her.
When a bin was two-thirds full, she would push it to the nearest conveyor belt and send it gliding off to parts unknown, then start a new one, Guendelsberger wrote in her 2019 book, On The Clock.
Every time the scanner has me squat down to get something from a low drawer, its a little harder to force myself back up to standing.
