How Amazon Delivers On One-Day Shipping

Uncovering and explaining how our digital world is changing and changing us.

Amazon announced earlier this week that it would start prioritizing the most in-demand essential items in its warehouses, as the e-commerce giant struggles to keep up with customer demand during the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic.

Now the other shoe has dropped.

On Sunday, customers and Amazon merchants posted on social media platforms saying certain nonessential items were showing April 21 delivery dates, even though they were listed as in-stock and shipping with Amazons Prime express shipping service. During normal times, Amazon Prime deliveries typically arrive in one or two days in the US. Now, some Prime deliveries for in-stock items are showing five-day delivery promises on the lower end, but those waits are as long as a month on some items.

An Amazon spokesperson confirmed to Recode on Sunday evening that the new April 21 delivery dates are not the result of a technical bug or error they accurately reflect Amazons current reality.

To serve our customers in need while also helping to ensure the safety of our associates, weve changed our logistics, transportation, supply chain, purchasing, and third-party seller processes to prioritize stocking and delivering items that are a higher priority for our customers, the spokesperson said in a statement. This has resulted in some of our delivery promises being longer than usual.

This story has been updated to include a statement from Amazon.

What To Do If Your Amazon Prime Delivery Is Late

Amazon is renowned for its ultra-fast deliveries, but even the biggest online retailer in the world can drop the ball from time to time. So how can you avoid an Amazon Prime late delivery? After all, members pay $119/year for expedited deliveries and the last thing you want as a paying member is an Amazon Prime late delivery.

Also, with Walmart Plus now available, Prime members have more options than ever for expedited delivery. Here are some pointers on what to do if you receive an Amazon Prime late delivery, especially now that Labor Day sales are here.

Does Amazon Deliver Packages On Sundays

Usually, there are no postal services on Sundays. So, the possibility of receiving orders on Sundays should be unrealistic. However, this isnt the case with Amazon. Their services are available seven days a week.

And, this offer is available to both prime members and non-prime members.

Amazon achieves Sunday deliveries using several carriers. They partner with UPS and USPS. Currently, they accept Sunday deliveries from Amazon only. But, USPS delivers priority mail on rare occasions though.

Amazon also includes Amazon Flex Delivery Service to speed up the process. Amazon Flex is an Amazon-owned delivery service.

However, USPS and UPS are only available in some areas. If you reside in a more rural area, Sunday deliveries wont be available to you. Most urban areas are yet to enjoy this offer. So you may have to find out if your area is eligible for this offer.

Currently, Amazon doesnt have a public list of areas with this benefit. But, the best way to find out is to put a call across UPS or USPS.

Can I Receive My Amazon Package On The Same Day

The simple answer to this question is Yes! You can receive your package on the same day. The chances are that you will receive your order by 9 pm or earlier. However, you need to place the order before noon.

Sadly, not every item on the site can be delivered on the same day. Same-day delivery is only available on qualifying orders. Now, you may be wondering what qualifying orders are. It is an order that contains over $35 of eligible items.

For prime members, eligible items are delivered free on the same day. However, some orders may be below $35. Then, prime members will have to pay a delivery fee of $2.99 per order.

For non-prime members, a fee of $12.99 is paid for each order. Additionally, your location may also limit your access to this benefit.

If youre eagerly waiting for a new guitar amp or a barbeque grill, chances are that you might have to wait for a little longer for your order to arrive. According to a report from Recode, Amazon is pushing Prime delivery dates of non-essential items in the US due to the coronavirus pandemic well past the usual day or two.

The development was confirmed by the company after several sellers and buyers posted on social media that shipping dates for their orders have been postponed. Most deliveries for Prime subscribers generally arrive within a day or two in the US. However, given the current situation, many items are showing a delivery date from five days to up to a month after your order is placed.

In a statement given to Recode, the ecommerce giant said it has changed its strategy to make sure its workers are safe:

To serve our customers in need while also helping to ensure the safety of our associates, weve changed our logistics, transportation, supply chain, purchasing, and third-party seller processes to prioritize stocking and delivering items that are a higher priority for our customers. This has resulted in some of our delivery promises being longer than usual.

Why Is Amazon Prime Shipping So Slow

As of 2020, Amazon began prioritizing essential orders over regular orders. So household staple items get moved to the front of the delivery line over non-essentials such as clothing, electronics, and home décor items.

The retail giant classified the following as essential orders:

  • Baby products
  • Pet supplies.

And, to make up for the unexpected spike, its been hiring thousands of people.

In fact, techhq.com wrote that no American company has hired so many workers so quickly. It reportedly hired 427,3000 people in 2020! A considerable chunk of those employed work as software engineers, hardware specialists, warehouse workers, and delivery drivers.

To put this in perspective, its important to recall that even before the pandemic, online shopping has been increasing dramatically.

I devoted a recent article of mine to this theme. In it, I showed, amongst other things, that online grocery shopping increased by 137% in 2020. In fact, most grocery retailers saw 8 years worth of online shopping orders just during the 12 months of 2020!

    Amazon’s Response To Covid

In addition to struggling with Prime delivery promises, Amazon is battling the coronavirus pandemic on multiple fronts. As it has grown, Amazon now deals in physical stores with its , and also generates significant revenue from Amazon Web Services. For AWS partners, Amazon is trying to provide easier access to cloud computing to ease the transition to working from home. The company is also leveraging AWS servers to aid in COVID-19 research computing. Amazon Go workers and many people employed in Amazon warehouses are receiving paid time off. For those still commuting to Amazon-owned locations, sanitation efforts have been improved, with cleaning crews now running regular disinfectant passes in high-traffic areas.

In a refreshingly humanitarian move, Amazon is also offering a grant to Seattle-based businesses located near its main offices. The Neighborhood Small Business Relief Fund, aimed at companies generating less than $7 million annually, is available for businesses suffering due to a lack of foot traffic as a result of the recommended social isolation to combat COVID-19. Additionally, Amazon is increasing its efforts to prevent online sellers on the website from gouging prices on high-demand, essential items like toilet paper and cleaning supplies. The company announced it has removed items with artificial price increases intended to take advantage of customers.

    Sign Up For Amazon Key

How Does Amazon Ship Products So Fast? How Does Amazon Prime Work?

You can make your packages arrive on time by making it easier for drivers to deliver to your home.

One way to do that is to sign up for .

Its only available for Amazon Prime members.

Through their Key service, Amazon drivers can place your package in a safe area like a garage.

Then they can close the garage door to keep it safe.

This helps your packages arrive sooner because you dont have to request a signature to ensure you get your package.

Since Amazon places the package inside the garage, its safe from thieves.

Removing the signature request from the delivery allows delivery drivers to leave the package at your home during their normal route.

    Talking To Customer Service

Once it’s time to talk to a customer service rep, the process is somewhat simple. Customers simply confirm that they purchased a product and that it hasn’t arrived. Amazon customer service will look into the claim, quickly determine that the package hasn’t arrived and, in most cases, automatically offer a free month of Amazon Prime service.

But as mentioned, some people have been lucky enough to get more than a free month of Prime, so it’s a good idea for customers to push back a bit and explain why the delay is such an inconvenience.

    MORE:

Perhaps you ran out of critical household goods or you were counting on the product to land in time so it could be given as a gift. Whatever the case, the commenters suggest customers who come up with a good reason Amazon’s delay is upsetting them are in a good position to get a bit more. As long as it’s all done in a polite manner. In other words, writing in all caps or too much complaining will probably get you nowhere.

Given that Amazons official policy only allows for customer service representatives to offer a freebie on the first late Amazon Prime delivery, the company might be less willing to offer a deal if delays start to pile up. As such, it’s a good idea to go for it all the first time around or face the possibility of more pushback on subsequent attempts.

You could also opt for one-day shipping where its available, or pay extra for guaranteed Saturday shipping, starting at $7.99 per item.

Non-Prime members may have to pay extra for weekend deliveries depending on the item and the seller.

Are Amazons Estimated Delivery Dates Accurate

Fast eCommerce shipping programs that raise conversions

Amazon delivery estimates are accurate about 95% of the time. There are times when orders are even delivered before the estimated delivery dates. The least accurate delivery times will be for non-essential items which may have gotten bumped lower in the priority list.

The company has a lot of staff working on its tracking software and logistics, so its estimates are really good. In fact, before the pandemic, its rare for packages to be delivered late.

On a lighter note, they are estimates.

Estimates are often affected by factors that may not have been taken into consideration. Because of this reality, estimated delivery dates are not guaranteed.

The estimated delivery date is a tentative date the order is expected to get to the customer. Its often displayed in your orders and notifications.
