The company announced plans for 125,000 warehouse and transportation jobs nationwide. The positions will pay between $18 and $22.50 an hour, plus health benefits and 401. As employees fight for better working conditions, CBS 17s Joseph Holloway asked the vice president of transportation services David Bozeman what hed say to anyone concerned about that.
Safety is our number one concern for our employees so we pride ourselves in our environments, Bozeman said.
The company says itll pay college tuition for employees and theyre spending $1.2 billion on this initiative.

We dont require or mandate vaccinations but we really strongly encourage that all our employees get vaccinated, Bozeman said.

Amazon is hiring 125,000 warehouse workers, some of whom will earn up to $22.50 an hour, the company said on Tuesday.
As the race to hire warehouse workers intensifies in preparation for the holiday season, Amazon has hiked its average starting wage for fulfillment and transportation workers, who will now earn more than $18 an hour, Amazon said, up from about $15 an hour.
In some of the tightest labor markets, which tend to be urban areas, the e-commerce giant is paying up to $22.50 an hour and is also dangling $3,000 sign-on bonuses, the company said.
Amazon is also opening more than 100 fulfillment centers and regional delivery stations in September after opening more than 250 of these facilities in last year alone.
The company did not immediately disclose the locations of those facilities, including whether any will be in the New York area.
The hiring binge comes as most retailers, including Walmart, Target, Home Depot and Macys, typically announce their plans to add seasonal workers, but this year many large companies are opting to hire full-time instead of temporary employees, according to outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas.
With just a few short weeks from the start of the holiday shopping season, retailers are announcing permanent hiring plans rather than seasonal ones, Andrew Challenger, senior vice president of the firm said in a statement on Tuesday.

Two Amazon warehouse workers who asked to remain anonymous said they’ve taken unpaid time off for more than a month because they were concerned they’d get sick and bring the virus home to their families. One of the employees, who works at an Amazon facility in Massachusetts, said that if unpaid time off was no longer an option, she was prepared to take a leave of absence or quit her job, which would be the “worst-case scenario.”
“The last thing I want to do is leave my job because I genuinely love working for Amazon, but I have a toddler and a very ill father that I have to look out for,” the worker said. “I wouldn’t want to risk exposure of this virus to them.”
Amazon has previously said it has gone to “great lengths” to keep facilities clean and make sure employees are following necessary precautions, such as washing their hands, using hand sanitizer and practicing social distancing. It has also started taking employees’ temperatures when they report to work and has supplied them with face masks. In addition, Amazon has announced several benefits changes for workers, including raising pay for warehouse workers and delivery drivers by $2 per hour through the month of April and doubling overtime pay.

Canada will hire 15,000 new warehouse and distribution workers in communities across the country this fall to support its ongoing Canadian expansion plans, the e-commerce giant said Monday.
Amazon also announced it will increase the starting wage for its front-line, hourly employees in Canada to between $17 an hour and $21.65 an hour, up from its current starting wage of around $16 an hour.
Existing employees will also receive an additional $1.60 to $2.20 per hour, starting immediately, Amazon said, regardless of how long theyve been with the company.
We are growing very rapidly in the country, said Sumegha Kumar, director of Canadian customer fulfilment operations for Amazon Canada, in an interview.
Our business is expanding a lot, and we want to continue to stay focused on our customers, so we obviously have needs around hiring and retaining top talent.
Amazon Canada currently has 25,000 full-time and part-time employees in 25 communities across five provinces. The company is growing rapidly due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting boom in online shopping.
