Should You Buy Amazon Stock
To be clear, stock splits don’t affect the value of the stock an investor holds.
“We wouldn’t use this as any reason by any stretch to buy the stock nor would we ever use a stock split announcement as a reason to become incrementally more positive on the stock,” Paul Hickey, co-founder of Bespoke Investment Group said on CNBC after Amazon’s announcement.
However, if you’ve had your eye on Amazon stock, the split would allow you to buy shares at a lower price. And Amazon is an investment Bespoke likes for the long-term, as the company has shown time and time again that it’s able to go into different sectors and be successful, Hickey said.
Amazon is “absolutely a good buy right now,” says Morningstar Senior Equity Analyst Dan Romanoff. The stock is one of his “top picks,” thanks in part to its advertising business and Amazon Web Services. Amazon’s Prime recent price hike also underscores Amazon’s pricing power, Romanoff wrote in a research note following Amazon’s most recent quarterly earnings report in February. The firm estimated Amazon’s value at $4,100 per share, meaning that it sees the stock as currently undervalued.
“Overall, we do not see issues with the long-term story as Amazon remains well positioned to prosper from the secular shift toward e-commerce and the public cloud over the next decade,” Romanoff added.
Consumers Show Signs Of Sinking And Could Pull Down Stocks With Them
In my Tuesday column I wrote about the precarious situation in Europe, specifically about skyrocketing energy prices, the unintended but easily predictable result of sanctions on Russia. It is because of those prices that the European consumer, small business sector and manufacturing sector face a long, dark winner. Goldman Sachs was out earlier this week projecting that by early 2023 the average household’s monthly energy bill in Italy will go from 150 euros to 600 euros.
It’s A Staggering Amount For Such A Small Investment
The growth of Amazon.com is remarkable. In less than 25 years, it has become one of the biggest retailers in the world. It has successfully expanded well beyond selling books to cloud service solutions, advertising, digital streaming, and smart speakers.
What started as a handful of employees, including founder and CEO Jeff Bezos, on their hands and knees packing orders is now a global operation with 750,000 employees and $265 billion in sales. Obviously, the stock has made some early investors a lot of money. But how much?

What’s Happening With The Antitrust Lawsuits Against Amazon
On March 18, 2022, the a U.S. Superior Cout judge dismissed an antitrust suit filed against Amazon by the attorney general for the District of Columbia, ruling the suit failed to show that Amazon’s agreements with third-party merchants obligating them to price their products on Amazon no higher then they do elsewhere serves to increase consumer prices. On April 13, 2022, the attorney general for the District of Columbia sought reconsideration of the ruling, arguing the agreements allow Amazon to charge higher fees for third-party listings than other online marketplaces, because merchants can’t pass on the lower listings fees to consumers.
On March 11, 2022, a U.S. district court judge in Washington state refused to dismiss a class action suit against Amazon over the same “most favored nation” pricing rules, brought by two frequent Amazon shoppers and several law firms.
Why Do Companies Split Their Stock
In a perfect world, a companys stock will rise over time. It wont gain value every day, of course, and there will be times when it goes down, but the overall trajectory is upward. Some companies stocks rise faster than others and some tech stocks have risen very quickly in a short period of time. The result of this, in addition to some very happy shareholders, is that the stock gets pretty expensive.
A company may feel that its stock is not viewed as affordable for the average investor if the price gets too high. So they split the stock, which lowers the price and hopefully attracts more investors, who then drive up the price.
This is not the first time Amazon has split its stock. On June 2, 1998, Amazon had a 2-for-1 split. Not long after that first split, on January 5, 1999, the company split the stock again, this time 3-for-1. Then on September 2, 1999, the company split the stock again, this time 2-for-1. The stock did not split again for almost 23 years, until the 20-for-1 split on June 6, 2022.
Stock splits are common, particularly among tech stocks. Apple stock has split five times since the company went public in 1980. Apple split 2-for-1 on June 16, 1987, 2-for-1 on June 21, 2000, 2-for-1 on February 28, 2005, 7-for-1 on June 9, 2014, and 4-for-1 on August 28, 2020.

Amazons Stock Price And Quality
Amazon is one of the many stocks thats received a blue-chip status. In other words, this categorization means that the companys stock is highly reliable. Typically, businesses that perform the strongest in the market earn that title.
However, you should also take note of the companys share price before making an investment. In April 2022, Amazons stock price was roughly $2,892 per share.
Its important to consider your long-term investment goals before purchasing Amazon shares, especially since the stock price and how it is valued could change. You should keep in mind, for instance, that in May 2022, Amazon shareholders approved a 20-for-1 stock split. This approval means that if you owned stock before the split, you would have seen 19 additional shares for each stock that you owned.
For reference, Amazons stock price is valued roughly at $140 per share as of August 2022, which adds up nearly to the value in August when you combine the total value of 20 shares.
Note that past performance does not guarantee future results.
You should always research stock before investing. Important factors to consider include the companys net income and earnings, which can be found on Amazons Form 10K. This is an annual report that all public companies must file with the SEC. In addition, it outlines everything from a companys total revenue and assets to its risk factors and liabilities.

On April 8, 2022, Amazon filed a motion with the National Labor Relations Board asking it to invalidate the Staten Island election results, alleging legal violations by union backers and bias in favor of the union by the NLRB’s regional office. On April 9, 2022, the NLRB said workers at an Amazon warehouse in Alabama rejected union representation on March 31, in an election re-run because the NLRB ruled the company improperly interfered with the first vote. On April 18, 2022, an administrative law judge ruled Amazon illegally fired an Amazon Labor Union from his job at the Staten Island warehouse in 2020 in retaliation for protected organizing activities. On April 25, 2022, workers at a second Amazon warehouse in Staten Island began voting on union representation. However, the effort to unionize the Staten Island warehouse failed, with 618 employees voting against joining the union and 380 for, according to results released by National Labor Board announced on May 2, 2022.

Is Buying Amazon Stock The Right Move For You
Anytime youre evaluating a stock, you need to decide whether its the right investment decision for you and your personal finance goals. One of the hazards of investing in individual stocks is that you could end up losing out if that company declares bankruptcy or goes out of business due to market volatility. Although its hard to imagine such a fate for Amazon, its still a possibility.
Another thing to take into account is that because Amazon had such an amazing run-up in stock price, getting in now isnt likely to provide you similarly dramatic returns. Many people who have made a lot of money picking individual stocks did so because they bought shares early on and benefited from the big gain in value. The time is past where you can buy Amazon for less than a few dollars per share and reap the big gains. However, you might still be able to meet your portfolio growth goals even when you buy fractional shares of Amazon.
If your goal is income investing, Amazon probably wont work for you. Amazon has never paid a cash dividend . It doesnt appear that Amazon is likely to adopt a dividend in the near future, though the company could decide to at some point. For the most part, Amazon stock is likely to work best for those who are looking for growth in their portfolios and believe Amazon still has room to increase in stock price.
Just remember that with investing, theres always the risk of loss, no matter what you choose to invest in.

What Is A Stock Split
A stock split occurs when a company decides that its stock has become too expensive and wants to lower the price. In order to have a lower stock price but maintain the companys valuation, they split the stock. Each share of stock is split into multiple shares, but the overall value of the total number of shares the market capitalization remains the same. So the price per share before the split is divided by the number of shares in the split.
Heres an example. Company ABCs shares are trading at $500 per share. A shareholder who owns 100 shares of ABC stock has an investment worth $50,000. The company declares a 2-for-1 stock split. Now that same shareholder owns 200 shares of ABC, but each share is worth $250. The shareholders total position is still worth $50,000.
In many cases, a company will split a stock 2-for-1 or 3-for-1. In a 2-for-1 split, a share of stock worth $100 will be split into two shares worth $50 each. Each shareholder would have double the number of shares, each worth half the price of a pre-split share. A 20-for-1 stock split, as Amazon has done, is rare.

Decide Whether You Should Buy Amazon Stock
You can find Amazon’s current stock price by searching for the company’s trading ticker, AMZN, on a financial information website or through your online broker.
Before you commit, consider:
How you’ll achieve diversification. Individual stocks are typically considered risky because they lack diversification if the company hits a rough patch, your portfolio will, too. To soften that blow, investors often turn to low-cost mutual funds like index funds to make up the bulk of their investment portfolios. These funds track a market index and invest in many companies in some cases, that includes Amazon which makes it easier to diversify your portfolio and lower your investment risk.
Your future investment plans. In general, it’s wise to invest on a regular basis. Theres even a name for this strategy: dollar-cost averaging. It means investing set amounts at standard intervals, rather than putting a lot of money into the market, or into a stock like Amazon, at once. Dollar-cost averaging can help ensure you dont always buy stocks or other investments at a high price.
