Should Amazon Be Paying Dividends

Tech startups take time before starting to pay dividends. Due to immense competition, capital-intensive companies are keen to build up more capital. According to many startups, returning the much-needed capital to shareholders may overexpose the companys competition and fail to catch up with its rivals. Amazon has capitalized on the strategy of investing back its profit.

The strategy has allowed Amazon to take full advantage of the strong periods while at the same time surviving the downturns that proved fatal for many of its competitors. Amazons decision not to pay dividends has not hurt its point as it has seen continued growth in its stock. The company has generated around 39% in revenue every year for the last ten years. The e-commerce giant has seen its revenue grow to around $26.7 billion over the past 12 months.

How Much Is 1 Share Of Amazon Stock

Bezos accrued $56.7 billion between January 1 and July 1, according to Bloombergfigures cited by BuzzFeed. That means he made $311.5 million per day, which translates to more than $216,000 per minute.

In February, Bezos purchased the Jack Warner estate from Dreamworks cofounder David Geffen for $165 million, setting a record for a home purchase in California, according to the Los Angeles Times.

In a conversation with Axel Springer CEO Mathias Döpfner in 2018, Bezos said he was going to devote his financial lottery winnings to Blue Origin, the aerospace manufacture and spaceflight services company he founded in 2000.

The only way that I can see to deploy this much financial resource is by converting my Amazon winnings into space travel, he said at the time. That is basically it. Blue Origin is expensive enough to be able to use that fortune. I am liquidating about $1 billion a year of Amazon stock to fund Blue Origin. And I plan to continue to do that for a long time.

He went on: I am very lucky that I feel like I have a mission-driven purpose with Blue Origin that is, I think, incredibly important for civilization long term. And I am going to use my financial lottery winnings from Amazon to fund that.

The Jeff Bezos-led tech company was down more than 76 points today.

On this same day a decade ago, closed at 41.56 points. Today the tech giant fell by more than 76.27 points. For most companies, a drop like that might be a real concern. Due to Amazon’s massive growth over the past ten years, though, it only represented 4.45 percent.

Amazon.coms stock is now at 1636.16, which makes it the most expensive stock on the Entrepreneur Index. It also represents about a 4,000 percent return on investment since 2008.

Theres no doubt the online retailer has been good to its investors so far. Whether that trend will continue, however, is a matter for some debate. According to TradingView, Amazon is listed as a strong sell, with 16 experts recommending to sell the stock, nine remaining neutral and only 1 recommending to buy the stock.

Other tech stocks were also down on Monday. Alphabet Inc. was down 2.58 percent, while was down 2.35 percent. Netflix shares dropped by 3.1 percent.

    Amazon Has Trended In October

The chart below shows that, over the past 20 years, Amazon stock has produced monthly returns of 2.5% at the median. September has historically been a bit better than other months, with median returns at 3.3%.

On the other hand, October has been a soft month of performance for AMZN shares, at a median loss of -1.3%. In fact, the fourth quarter of the year has been seasonally the weakest for Amazon stock. This is probably the case because the excitement over the performance of Amazons e-commerce business during the late-year shopping season fizzles through December.

Figure 2: Amazon stock median returns over past 20 years.

    data from Yahoo Finance

The fourth bar above tells an interesting story that caught me by surprise. While Amazons performance tends to be poor in October, it is substantially more so when followed by a loss in September. The fifth bar above reinforces the idea: October tends to be better when September produces a gain.

What this means is that, historically, AMZN has trended in October, consistently with the share price movements in September, rather than returned to a mean. Of course, this could be merely a coincidence. But if not, it may be an indication that the month that starts today could be challenging again for Amazon investors.

How Much To Invest In Amazon

One of the most important considerations is how much money you can afford to put into Amazon stock.

The answer isn’t necessarily the same as how much money you have available. That’s because the stock market is considered a long-term investment, and financial experts typically warn against buying any stock with money youll need within the next five years.

Before buying individual stocks, it’s also wise to make sure you have an adequate emergency fund and that you’re saving for any important short-term goals.

With a stock price as high as Amazon’s, you might also be interested in fractional shares, which allow you to purchase a piece of a share based on a set amount of money you want to invest rather than the whole thing. Not all online brokers offer fractional shares, but the offering is becoming more common.
