Create Your Book Cover

When it comes to publishing a successful book on Amazon, having a perfect book cover design is one of the most important aspects to get right. Contrary to what we were told growing up, people do, in fact, judge a book by its cover. Its actually one of the biggest deterrents.

Your cover is exactly how your book will be judged at first glance.

Make sure that your cover is created professionally and that it will stand apart from the rest of the books in your genre or category.

You can find cover creators on freelancing sites such as:

Prices will depend on the level of service, but these sites will give you plenty of amazing graphic designers to choose from! Its a great investment that will make your book stand out perfectly.

We offer Self-Publishing School students a list of qualified, trusted book cover designers they can work with in order to get a worthy cover.

Make sure to do your research regarding what type of book cover does best in your genre. If you write fantasy books, for example, it will be a lot different than writing a memoir or even a historical fiction.

Make Sure You Get Sales

For most guys, this is going to be the single biggest doubt: What if I go through the trouble of writing an entire book, and then it doesnt sell?

Remember, if you validated the idea, there will be at least some demand for your book. You also want an eye-catching cover and a strong title, but the majority of your books success will come down to how you launch it.

You cant just hit the publish button and expect people to buy it.

Just like with any online business, you need to promote your product. The key is to price the book at 99 cents for the first week, and then let as many people know about it as possible. For such a low price, anyone who is even remotely interested in the book will pick up a copy.

So how do you get the word out? Here are a few easy ways that work well:

  • Run a Buck Books promotion
  • Blast your email list if you have one
  • Pitch a guest post to a relevant blog

Basically, do anything in your power to let people know about the 99 cent promotion.

This was enough to get him the #1 spot on the Mens Health bestsellers list.

This should be your goal . This will give it a lot of visibility on Amazon, and ultimately will lead to organic traffic from people who are browsing similar books.

How Much Money Can You Make With A Publishing House

The math is simple. If you are a first-time author and you go with a publisher, you can expect the following deal:

  • Advance: $24k
  • 610% of the book salesusually in two-tiers, a lower percentage up to 10k copies, 12% higher after that
  • 2030% of the ebook sales

This means that if the book sells for $10 and you manage to sell 50 thousand copies, youll be making $50k.

If youre lucky.

In its entire lifetime.

The median household income in the US is $52k, and thats per year. So if your book sells welland believe me, 50k is a fantastic result for a first-time author youll be making in 10 years what a normal person makes in just 1 year.

I hope you do, but chances are you wont sell well.

Whats a realistic figure?

The average book sells 2,000 copies in its lifetime. So, with the advance, thats $45k for you. Just about enough for one/two months of living, but spread across 10 years.

It makes sense, though. 2,000 copies selling at $10 each would gross $20k. That is, not coincidentally, barely enough to cover taxes, your advance, the time of the editor, the graphic designer, and the minimal marketing the publishing house put forth. Its simple math, really.

There are, of course, exceptions. Some first-time authors get six-figure deals, but unless youre a known fugitive wanted by the FBI and CIA, a media sensation, or a world-champion athlete, youre likely to get the deal I just described.

How Much Money Can You Make From eBooks on Amazon ...

Once you get your niche down, then its time to put the pedal to the medal and start pumping out titles.

I once wrote 44 novellas in 22 months. I dont advise that, but I also know of authors whove written 100 titles in a year . And yes, short fiction sells.

For 2021, my goal is to hit the $10,000 mark in earnings. This is totally doable as my books tend to be novellas .

Ive written them as short as 10,000 words, and as long as 55,000, but my comfort range is 25,000 to 35,000 words.

Also, I have a huge back catalog . When you put out a new one, it drives sales of the older ones.

Again, in my experience, money is made in self-publishing by volume, especially in romance. So pump those titles out.

Tip:Write sequels. If book 1 does well, do a sequel. Readers love them and its an easy way to make more money seamlessly as a self-published author.

Four of my best sellers are sequels: A Lover for Beth, Ruthless Love, A Taste of Taraand Priced Out of Love. None of them were planned. I waited to see if the first book was going to sell well. Why?

Because theres nothing more soul-draining than writing a sequel to a book that did poorly in sales. It saps my creativity. So I wait for sales on book 1. If it does well, then I know that a percentage of its buyers will buy book 2, and so on.

FYI, heres an easy way to distribute your books in lots of places to maximize your self-publishing income.

The Verdict: Is It Worth It To Self Publish A Book On Amazons Kdp Platform

Based on the pros and cons above, Id say that if your only objective is to share information you know and turn that into revenue, youre better off looking into consulting, coaching, or creating a video course that you can sell for a much higher price point than an eBook.

However, if you have some spare time and believe that being able to point to the fact that youre a published author on Amazon will help boost your credentials or career, then its worth it.

Self publishing on Amazon is also worth it if you can use the clicks and views that your eBook receives to boost another venture. Do you have a newsletter or email list? Put a freebie into your book and offer it in return for an email signup.

So overall it was worth it for me to publish my short e-book on Amazon, but Im glad I stopped writing the book I originally planned Career Change at Any Age because it would have taken months and would not have been worth it in this format.

After choosing a shorter topic to write about , Im happy to have something up and selling.

This process of self publishing on Amazon will also give me experience launching, marketing, and selling a product which is extremely valuable. I didnt have this experience previously.

But self publishing a book on Amazon is not a home run play by any means. The highest paid authors on Amazon have a series of books and have spent years building that up. And the highest paid authors on Amazon KDP tend to be fiction writers, too.

How Much Can You Make

Youll probably want to price your book between $2.99 and $9.99. In that range, for sales in most countries, Amazon pays a royalty of 70%. Otherwise, you get 35%. At a price of $16.00, for example, youll make $5.60 , but if you price you book at $9.99 youll be paid $6.99 per sale .

The best price point for small books is often right at $2.99, where you get a royalty of $2.09 per sale which isnt bad considering that for each $19.95 sale of my print book on weird ways to make money, my publisher pays me just $1.50 .

Ask Your Street Team For Reviews

When youre self-publishing books on Amazon, whether theyre written by you or a trusted ghostwriter, those first few days are critical.

If you dont have anybody buying your book or leaving reviews as soon as you publish, the chances of it taking off are slim to none.

This is where your street team comes into play.

The moment your book goes live, you should send an email to your street team asking them to leave their reviews.

And this is important: You should ask them to download the book from Amazon first, and then write their reviews. If they dont do it in this order, their reviews wont be verified. They will still show up, but Amazon wont give them as much weight.

If youd rather not ask them to pay $0.99 in order to leave a review, you can enroll in KDP Select and run a free promotion for 72 hours.

That way, they can purchase the book for free, and Amazon should still mark their reviews as verified.

How Much Can You Make As A Romance Writer Real Numbers

Can You Make Money from Amazon Self-Publishing? | SelfPublishedWhiz

Imagine this you have a mailing list of 5,000.

If just 5% of them bought every new book you put out, and you priced it at $2.99 , thats over $500 right there .

This does not include sales that will come from other outlets and other books that will pick up some steam when you put out a new release.

This is why I preach that publishing regularly is the key to making money writing romance.

When I wrote those 40 novels in 22 months, I broke the $2,000 mark within six months. I was putting out one every 7 to 21 days. Thats why sales ramped up fast. And this is with bad reviews.

But enough of an audience liked my writing that I was able to find an audience of loyal readers readers who kept coming back and buying other titles.

See these reviews? The same person bought multiple books, which brings me to recent sales.

Amazon Self Publishing & Why Its The Best Option

Traditional publishing is on the way out.

This has been the reality for some time now and for good reason.

While traditional publishing had its time and was once the only option for publishing a book, the system in place right now is one made for the next Stephen King not for those who have value to share with the world.

Though traditional publishing is still a viable option for some, Amazon self-publishing is the best option and heres why:

  • Over 70% of books are sold on Amazon
  • 310 million book buyers through Amazon last year
  • Those buyers accounted for over $178 billion in sales
  • Its easier and faster with Amazon self-publishing

There are major differences between traditional vs self-publishing with the majority of authors opting to take their talents to Amazon instead of through one of the Big 5 publishing houses.

Check out the video below to see why you should consider it too.

How Much Do Authors Make A Year

There are a ton of factors that play a role in how much authors make in a year. No two authors will make the same amount, though we all wish we could be lumped with the income of J.K. Rowling or Stephen King.

How much an author makes per year depends on:

  • Royalty rate earned per book sale
  • Up-front advance offered
  • Scope of book marketing
  • How many books are published per year
  • How many books are currently out

While most people think traditionally published authors make more than self-published authors because of the fame of authors like Stephen King or George R.R. Martin, thats not actually true.

The averages actually swing higher in favor of self-published authors.

You can see a real breakdown of each with our self-publishing vs traditional publishing analysis to see for yourself.

Here are the main differences in income for self-published authors versus traditionally published authors:

Self-Published Authors

  • 40% 60% royalties per book
  • Can publish 2-3 high-quality books a year
  • No advance, but you make money right away
  • 10% 12% royalties per book
  • Can take 2-3 years to publish one book
  • Up-front advance

If you want a specific amount made per book between self-published authors and traditionally published authors at a $13.99 retail price and a 50% royalty rate for self-published authors and a 10% royalty rate for traditionally published authors, here you go:

Self-Published Authors $13.99 retail priced book

$4.77 per book

$0.95

Lesson : Do Not Write A Book To Make Money

If youre thinking of writing a book so you can make loads of money, retire and enjoy piña colada in some pacific island, think again.

Ill be very blunt:

Its almost impossible to make a living with book sales.

This is the hard truth, and soon it will become obvious why.

Yes, Im sure youve read a story somewhere about a guy who sold gazillion copies by self-publishing on Amazon, or the wunderkind who got a million-dollar deal with her first book. And thats exactly why you read them, theyre so astronomically unlikely that someone wrote an article about it.

Most people dont make any money writing books, and chances are you wont be part of the 0.01% that makes it.

This is a no-bullshit walkthrough of what you can realistically get.

How Much Money Can You Make On Amazon With Kindle Ebooks

How Much Money Can You Make Self Publishing A Book?

Well, the short answer is some authors can make plenty. It depends on the quality of your eBook and also the volume of eBooks that you have. Ill start with my own Amazon earning experience! I have a few eBooks on now and the screenshot below details some of my recent earnings from Amazon Kindle over the last couple of months for January and February.

In Feb, I was paid £184.03 which was a little less than in January but even so, Im pleased with the extra income! Most of these payments come from sales of my eBooks 101 Ways to Make Money from Home and How to Start a Bridal Makeup Business.

Quick Tip

I identified a popular page on my blog from Google Analytics which co-incidentally was a How To type post. I created more content and packaged it into an eBook about setting up a bridal makeup business. If you want to create an eBook that will sell, find out what your readers want and need and then use that to inspire your eBook!

So although Im clearly not rich yet, my experience with earnings from self-publishing eBooks so far has been pleasant. But what kind of earnings have other self-publishing authors managed to achieve?

How Much Does It Cost To Self

Generally speaking, the cost to publish a book depends on the length of the book, the level of quality you want and the complexity of the manuscript and book cover. Most authors spend £500-£1,200 to self-publish their books â this includes editing, proof-reading, formatting and book cover design.

To summarise, here’s how much it could cost on average to self-publish a 300-page paperback:

  • Editing: £300
  • Book cover: £320
  • Printing cost : £3.70

The total cost to hold your finished book in your hand would be £1123.70.

Although proofreading and copy editing are essential, you can often do this yourself. The same goes for formatting. But one cost you can’t cut back on is your cover.

You don’t have to pay anything if you want to copyright your book in the UK. However, when publishing internationally, or in the USA, you may need to register your work to protect it. Our extensive guide covers copyright when self-publishing.

Now letâs see look at the detail, what exactly affects the cost and what the possible price ranges for professional help are.
