Theres no doubt that Amazons Alexa-powered smart home device is having a bit of a moment. Chances are that youve probably got at least one of these devices in your home already and, it should come as no surprise to learn that Wi-Fi woes are chief among the issues Amazon Echo owners have to deal with.

Thankfully there is a solution, which is why we have put together a guide to resolving Wi-Fi problems with your Amazon Echo device.

Add Your Location & Language

Since Amazon already has your address for sending your orders, you may as well add it to Alexa. Then you can ask it for traffic updates when you need to travel someplace.

Then add your timezone. This is essential for alarms and reminders.

If you want to change your wake word , then you can do it here as well. But I am inclined to leave it the way it is.

Finally, change the language to the one you want. Since I have a German account, it put it in German, but I want Alexa to be in English. Heres where things get a bit weird. It told me that if I changed the language on a German account to English, I would have problems ordering things on Amazon if I spoke the order to Alexa.

Best news my wife has ever heard.

Set Up Voice Commands

How to set up an Amazon Echo

While most Echo models have control buttons on top , most of the time you’ll probably interact with your Echo entirely via voice.

To give a command, start with the wake word, which by default is “Alexa.” In other words, to give a command, you might say, “Alexa, what time is it?”

As a general rule, you need to use the wake word before every command, but after certain commands, Alexa stays awake and can respond to follow-up commands without hearing the wake word again. For example, if you say, “Alexa, give me a five minute timer,” you can then give an additional command, like “tell me the news,” without saying Alexa a second time. Alexa indicates it’s still awake with a blue light.

If you prefer, you can configure your Echo to respond to another wake word, like “Echo,” “Amazon,” “Computer,” or “Ziggy” instead.

Tell Alexa To Play You Music

This one is probably the best feature of all, but what sucks is that to use most of the music services, you need to have a Premium subscription. So I went ahead and upgraded to a Spotify Premium subscription. If you have a preferred music service, you can specify it as the default service.

I can now lie in bed, ask Alexa the time, tell it to set an alarm, then finally tell it to play relaxing music.

Alexa, play relaxing music for anything general, or you can obviously tell it to play something specific.

On Spotify, if you have a Premium subscription, you can transfer your music playing between devices. This includes Alexa. So if you are listening on your laptop or tablet, you can transfer it over to Alexa.

Start Using Your Echo

Congratulations, your Amazon Echo is all set up and ready for use! To make sure everythings working properly, you can conduct a simple test by trying out a few basic commands. For example, say the wake word and Hello. If your Echo is set up properly, Alexa should respond with a simple Hello in return. In the Alexa app menu, you will see two sections called Skills & Games and Things to Try. These are both excellent ways to learn about Alexas capabilities.

Skills can help you customize Alexa by giving her certain abilities think of them as mini-apps from many different creators that you can use for entertainment, organization, news, and much more.

You can start using your Echo device for a range of tasks. To get started with your Amazon Echo, it helps to know what the individual buttons and lights mean.

The majority of the Amazon Echo devices are controlled in a similar way and each model comes with an action button, volume controls, a light ring, and a microphone off option.

The Action Button, which youll need to use during setup and troubleshooting, is the button with a single white dot in the center. You can use this button to turn off the alarm and timer as well as wake up Echo.

The Volume controls are either represented with plus and minus buttons or via a ring on the Amazon Echo and the Echo Plus. On the latter, you can increase the volume by rotating the volume ring in a clockwise direction.

The button to disable the microphone, which stops Alexa from being able to listen to you, is depicted by a microphone with a line through it. Once disabled, the light ring will turn red. Pressing it again will turn the microphone back on.

To start using your Amazon Echo, following setup, simply say Alexa followed by your question or command. If it has recognized your voice, the light will turn blue to indicate its listening.

The Amazon Echo and Echo Dot on their own dont do a whole lot or theyre certainly not as useful without enabling Alexa Skills which brings us to our next tutorial.

Link Your Email And Calendar

Amazon’s Alexa assistant can remind you of upcoming events and help you manage your schedule, but you have to connect your email account through the Alexa app. Navigate to Settings> Calendar & Email> and select from Google, Microsoft, Apple and Microsoft Exchange.

If you only want to connect your calendar, you can turn off the email setting on the next page, then tap Next. Enter your email address and follow the onscreen instructions.

Control Your Amazon Fire Stick

If you have an Amazon Fire Stick remote control for Prime , then you can now use Alexa to play what programmes and movies you want to watch.

I have yet to test this, but it is apparently just a case of saying Alexa, watch name of programme here’. We are unlikely to use it because our Fire Stick is already voice-activated.

Set Up Your Amazon Alexa For The First Time With A Few Easy Clicks

Yes I know its dusty! My office collects dust!

I was very pleasantly surprised by how simple it was to set up Alexa. I imagined it to be hours reading a manual, hunting through the Amazon website, having back-and-forth exchanges with customer support, and so on. In the end, it amounted to going to one page, clicking what I wanted, then talking to it for the first time. Even idiots can use it!

I was a bit taken aback though by the fact that it is not battery-operated like a smartphone or tablet. You must keep the plug in the socket at all times for it to work. If you take the plug out, then its dead. Although this is not a big thing for me, it might annoy some people that it has to be continually charging. You also need to find a suitable location for it near a spare plug socket.
