How To Publish A Book On Amazon: Choose A Pricing Strategy And Upload Book
Now it’s time to price your book and list it for sale!
If you don’t have an audience, I highly recommend that you list your book for free the first 5 days. If you enroll your book in the Amazon Kindle select program , you are allowed up to 5 free days every 90 days.
This is the strategy the Steve Scott and Nick Loper recommend. In fact, we followed Nick Loper’s launch strategy VERY closely throughout the entire process. So if you want even more details, I highly recommend checking out Nick’s course right here that is currently 75% off.
A Great Pricing Strategy When You Publish a Book on Amazon
Here’s the pricing strategy that we followed when launching our book, and it has worked extremely well:
- Free first 5 days
- $0.99 3 to 7 days after your free days
- $2.99 after your $0.99 period
Listing your book for free should help you climb to the top of a few categories within Amazon. People love free stuff, so your book will get downloaded. And if you do the additional marketing that I suggest below, you should get LOTS of downloads.
After the first 5 days, your book should be performing well if all goes according to plan . Then when you list your book for $0.99 it’s really the first time you can get some market validation for your book!
Are people actually willing to pull out their credit cards and hit the buy button?
Pricing at $0.99 will only earn you a 35% royalty rate from Amazon which is pretty terrible, so you won’t want to leave it here permanently.
How To Setup Your Author Central Account
While youre waiting for verification, you can start adding information to your Author Page. You cannot add or make changes to your books or blog until your identity is confirmed, but dont let that stop you from getting started. You can start adding things like pictures and a bio right away.
Choose A Book Title And Subtitle
In your Kindle Direct Publishing profile, you need to fill in the title and subtitle of your book. While a subtitle is optional, having a good subtitle is something you should definitely consider to bring in more views and create stronger intrigue and help people find your book when searching.
Here are a couple tips to crafting a great book title:
- Use a Book Hook: Your book hook should speak to the reader in a unique voice that grabs their attention and feeds into what they are looking for.
- List the Benefits: Your potential readers want to know what they will get from reading your book. One technique is to deliver the benefits in the subtitle, providing enough tantalizing information to further attract readers.
Think about what you would be attracted to in a book title. Keep it simple, clear, and unique. Research the title you want to use and make sure it hasnt been scooped up by a high-performing book already.
You dont want to make competition for yourself.

Reach Out To Relevant Groups And Blogs
Reaching out to both Facebook groups and relevant blogs can be a good way to jump start downloads of your book.
During your free days, here’s a list of the 5 Facebook Groups that we submitted too:
These are all groups with free book promotions, so they welcome your submissions.
Certain niches could have good success reaching out via email to bloggers that are relevant to your book. Ideally, you would be able to do this ahead of time before your launch. This will help it have the most impact.
I’ll admit that Perrin and I tried reaching out to several bloggers but had almost no success in getting mentions. Luckily, that didn’t seem to matter. We still ranked very well naturally in Amazon’s ecosystem with the other marketing efforts that we did.

Get Reviews Before You Start Selling Your Book On Amazon
Reviews are key to a book selling. On Amazon, some readers will completely ignore your book if it has zero reviews, because there will always be 5 other books for them to choose from. Getting the first early reviews is hard, but dont get discouraged, and whatever you do, dont cheat, . You are permitted to politely ask people to review your book, but you cant pay them to do it. One tried and true technique for getting reviews is to run a giveaway, gifting copies to the winners. Once the giveaway is over, you can politely ask the winners to review your book. Theres no guarantee that they will review it , but its a good way to get started. Sound like a pain? You can always have us do the legwork for you with our Giveaway Package.
Set Up Book Promotion Lists
There are book promotion sites with thousands of subscribers that will email your book to their list of readers.
The fees for these services vary, but the good promotional sites are worth the price.
You have to apply for these promotions ahead of time, but not every book gets in .
Apply early to have them promote your book on day 2 of your launch week.
If you can get a BookBub promotion, its fantasticbut that tends to be a longshot, and the timing can be tough to coordinate. Its by far the best promotion site out there, but that also makes it the most in-demand.

To Give Your Book Away Or To Not Give Your Book Away That Is The Question
Heres what to do for your book launch. Amazon has a program called Kindle Select.
You enroll your book for 90 days at a time. You cannot be selling this book on any other websites including your own during the time your book is enrolled.
Enrolling and uploading your book in KDP Select allows borrowing of your book for free by Amazon Prime members.
It also gives you the option of choosing 5 days out of the 90 days your book is enrolled to give your book away for free.
I enrolled my second book in KDP and gave away 464 free copies over two days.
The book also rose to #1 in free books in the Kindle store, but as soon as it wasnt free it quickly sank right off the best-selling list.
Before I gave it away for free the book was selling just fine and consistently ranking between #10 -20.
It took nearly two weeks for it to rise back up again and to re-appear on the best-selling list.
My theory is that I saturated my market too quickly. Im not likely to give my book away for free again.
You may feel differently though and you should experiment with this.
Some people love it and rave about it.
If you are using your book to develop leads for your business and not to create passive income then definitely go for it.
Free does sell.
I’m Pleased To Know That The People Behind Kindle Are Still Hard At Work Trying To Give Writers Like Myself An Opportunity And A Voice
A.J. Cosmo, author of Monsters A to Z
I joined the Kindle platform in the winter of 2011, though I have been writing and drawing in some capacity since the third grade. The biggest challenge to publication was my own self-doubt. This fear kept me from approaching agents and publishers with my work. Creative freedom, combined with immediate results, led me to the Kindle platform. It’s said that Amazon removed the gatekeepers to publishing, which is partially true, but in reality it made the general public into the gatekeepers. I have learned over the past three years what people like about my work and that has allowed me to grow faster than would have been possible through traditional publishing.
With the advent of Kindle Unlimited I feel like we’re on the verge of something spectacular. Whatever that may be, I’m pleased to know that the people behind Kindle are still hard at work trying to give writers, like myself, an opportunity and a voice.
Choose Your Amazon Keywords
If you want your book to show up in Amazon and Google search engines, youll need the right mix of keywords. Since Amazon allows only seven keywords per book, keyword selection requires strategy.
But what are keywords exactly?
Keywords are specific words or phrases used to describe your book. If someone was looking for a book on your topic, they might type one of those keywords into Amazon or Google in order to find it. Amazon self publishing is all about becoming relevant in the niche you need to be. This not only gets you the type of readers you want, it also helps tremendously to have the correct visibility.
For example, if your book is about perseverance, you might find keywords like this useful:
- how to have perseverance
- persevering when its hard
These are all phrases or words people looking to better themselves with perseverance would type into search engines in order to find what theyre looking for, like in the image below.
Amazon Keyword Research Tools
Make a list of possible keywords for your book, then leverage the tools above to test your keywords. Putting in the time to get keywords right will have your book rank higher and appear more frequently to readers.
Resources To Find Work
You might want to gain some experience before auditioning for major audiobook publishers, so consider looking for work on Guru, Freelancer, Fiver, or Upwork. You might not find audiobook narration jobs right away, but you can build your portfolio. More audiobook-specific venues for jobs include ACX.com, VoiceBunny.com, and Voices.com, though some of these platforms are looking for narrators with experience.

Decide What Type Of Books You Want To Sell
- Wholesale: Buy in bulk for lower prices online or at bookstore closings. You can also procure new books in larger quantities from distributors or publishers. You may not have total control over what you get, but you can get more books at wholesale costs.
- Local sources: Find used books by browsing local library book sales, used book stores, yard sales, and thrift shops. You may also discover collectible books at estate sales.
- Auctions: Seek out auctions, estate sales, or farm sales selling used or collectible books.
How Does Amazon Self Publishing Work
Traditional publishing is on the way out.
This has been the reality for some time now and for good reason.
While traditional publishing had its time and was once the only option for publishing a book, the new system of self-publishing levels the playing field. When done right, self-published authors can make more money, retain all their rights, and leverage their books in more ways than ever before.
Though traditional publishing is still a viable option for some, Amazon self-publishing is the best option and heres why:
- Over 70% of books are sold on Amazon
- 310 million book buyers through Amazon last year
- Those buyers accounted for over $178 billion in sales
- Its easier and faster with Amazon self-publishing
Check out the video below to see why you should consider it too.
In the next few paragraphs, you learn step-by-step how to self-publish on Amazon.

What To Expect On Your First Day In The Studio
So you landed your first narrating gigcongrats! Now, what does a typical day look like? Once youre in the booth, your day will be relatively straightforward. Youll normally record for about six hours with brief breaks throughout. Be sure to use these breaks to eat, stretch, and do whatever you need to do to stay loose and focused. Ill walk through the studio and see people doing pushups or jumping jacks or yoga. So do whatever you do. You want to sound the same at the end of the day as you do at the beginning of the day, says Lambrix. Because somebody who’s listening isn’t going to start and end their day with you. They’re going to listen all the way through.
During the day, be sure to take advantage and connect with those around you if youre in a studio. Remember the tip above about networking? Heres your opportunity to do just that, even if you are a bit more conservative in your approach. Get to know everybody at the studio. Talk with your producer, your engineer. Figure out how they like to work. Let them know how you like to work. And then make sure that you’re getting your styles to mesh, says Lambrix.

You Will Get More Book Deals
We received a lot of emails last year from foreign publishers. They wanted to pay advances on royalties for the rights to publish some of our books in Chinese, French, Korean, German, Polish, and other languages. They also offered to pay ongoing royalties after the first printing of the book sells.
These publishers didnt contact us because I am some kind of publishing genius who knew how to find these opportunities. They came to us because our books sell so well on Amazon. These are the types of opportunities that can come your way when your book becomes a best-seller on Amazon. Even if youre a self-published or indie author you can still get book deals and advances on royalties to have other publishers publish your book in different languages and in different countries. How cool is that?!
