    Amazon Smart Plug Review

Amazon has thrown their hat in the ring of competing smart plugs with their own aptly named Amazon Smart Plug. The Amazon Smart Plug doesnt require any extra apps, it uses the Alexa app for setting up. This plug has a small profile and a seemingly strong build quality. Unfortunately, I had issues getting this device to connect to some WIFI networks. It worked okay on my UniFi network, but would not connect to my aunts Google WIFI home network. It is also more expensive than most other smart plugs. The Amazon Smart Plug is automatically integrated with Alexa, but will not integrate with Home Assistant systems. It is proprietary to Amazons system only and does not support local control. For many of these reasons, I would NOT recommend the Amazon Smart Plug.

That said, its yet another example of how to control stuff around the house without moving an inch. Do you find it more useful for its ability to cut off the power supply of some appliances than say having two Echo speakers inside your home? Or does it still need plenty of improvements before its worth buying?

Fix Amazon Smart Plug Not Connecting (Provisioning/Service Failure)

Amazon Smart Plug is a great new device from Amazon. It was released in late 2018 and it is becoming increasingly popular. This device can make any device in your home a smart device, making it incredibly useful.

However, the Amazon Smart Plug, as well as other Amazon devices, is a bit difficult to install from a PC or laptop. This is due to somewhat poor integration of the Alexa app with computers. Amazon is not to be blamed entirely because they dont have access to some of the popular operating systems.

What Can You Do With An Echo Dot And Smart Plug

The Echo Dot is a highly versatile smart speaker. However, its interaction with the Amazon Smart Plug will always be limited by the possibilities of the Smart Plug itself.

It should work with most household electronics such as lights, lamps, coffeemakers, microwave ovens, as well as other smaller devices.

So far, powerful electronics such as AC systems, refrigerators, and other power-hungry gadgets arent supported by Smart Plug devices since they cant handle a very high power transfer safely.

Its also important to note that you may not be able to power your computer or TV with the Amazon Smart Plug.

While it is possible to turn it off by speaking into an Echo device assigned to the TV, if the TV doesnt have an auto turn on feature, your smart plug will only be able to give it power but not power it on.

    How Does It All Work

As mentioned above, the bread and butter of your home automation is achieved by using what Amazon calls Routines. You program these in to your Alexa app, setting up a list of instructions that the assistant will follow. You can use these routines to do all sorts of things, from playing your favorite music and slowly turning up the lights to help you wake up, to brewing an espresso when you walk in your front door.

Routines are generally set to operate at a specific time, but theyre actually pretty flexible if you want to do something more in depth, like turning things off after theyve been on for a specific time. For example, if you know that youre always out of the house within an hour of waking up, you can set your Routine so that everything that has been switched on is turned off again an hour later. That way, you dont need to worry about shutting things down before you head off to work.
