Amazon Digital Music Store: Buy Mp3s For Your Local Collection

You dont have to use Amazons unlimited music streaming services. You can choose to buy your music the old-fashioned wayor at least the old-fashioned online wayby buying individual MP3s or albums of MP3s from the Amazon Store. Some music is only available for purchase and isnt offered as part of their streaming services. That choice is up to the music artist or their label.

Search Amazons digital music store and find MP3s you want to buy. It will often be cheaper to buy an entire album at once than MP3s of all the songs in it one by one, but you can also choose to buy individual songs from an album.

Those MP3s will also appear in your Amazon streaming library, if youre a subscriber. If you ever want to re-download them, just head to the Purchased Music section of your Amazon Music library.

Speakers And Voice Assistants

As an Apple Music subscriber, you can use Apple’s Siri voice assistant on your iOS devices as a personal DJ to control song playback, queue up songs, find song facts, add songs to your library, play your favorite playlists, or even play something new. Getting Amazon Music to work with Siri requires the use of Siri Shortcuts, and even then it isn’t guaranteed to work and it lacks many Siri skills exclusive to Apple Music.

If you own any of Amazon’s Echo speakers or an Amazon Fire TV, then you can tap into the company’s Alexa voice assistant, which offers many similar DJ skills as Siri does for Apple Music. All Amazon Music Unlimited subscription plans work on Amazon Echo and Fire TV devices. In the U.S. at least, Apple Music can also be set up to stream on Amazon Echo devices, but it’s not as seamless and you won’t get said Alexa skills.

On the other hand, Apple’s HomePod speaker is made to be used in conjunction with Apple Music. In fact, one of the main uses for Siri on HomePod is to control your Apple Music collection. There are Siri voice commands for accessing content like playlists, genres, moods, liking or disliking songs, playing more music based on something you’ve heard, starting a new radio station, and much more. None of these functions will work with an Amazon Music subscription you can stream audio to HomePod from a device running the Amazon Music app, but that’s it.

Amazon Music Unlimited Vs Tidal

Relaunched by Jay-Z with help from a host of other music icons, Tidal seemed like it was going to be the future of music streaming for a moment. It offered the best quality sound, a large catalog of exclusives, and high-definition music videos in its service. While Tidal is still the only place you can find things like Jay-Zs complete discography and Beyoncés Lemonade, it recently lost its exclusive rights to Princes albums, giving people one less reason to subscribe.

Tidal costs $9.99 a month for the standard premium service, or $19.99 a month for its lossless high fidelity service. Be careful though to subscribe through its website and not the iOS app. Subscribers who join via the iOS app pay 30 percent more for the service due to Apple Store fees, with costs of $12.99 and $25.99, respectively. If youre willing to pay a high premium for superior sound quality, or frankly have the sort of equipment where you could notice the difference in sound, Tidal may be worth considering. Otherwise, its simply too much money for not enough extra features.

Amazon Music Unlimited And Amazon Prime Music

Price: Prime Music is included free with , Amazons paid subscription service that costs $13 per month or $119 per year. It has a library of 2 million songs.

Amazon Music Unlimited costs $8 per month for Prime members or $10 per month for non-Prime members. Theres a free three-month trial and a discounted family plan. You can also get a special rate of $4 per month if you sign up for the Single Device Plan via an eligible Amazon Echo device.

You can also access free, ad-supported playlists and stations by asking an Alexa smart assistant to play music.

Who its best for: Amazon Prime members and anyone looking for a bargain.

Pros: Both are ad-free, on-demand services, and if you already have a Prime subscription, Amazon Music Unlimited is the best deal you can get. Unlimited has over 75 million songs, curated playlists, podcasts, and personalized stations. That entire library can now be streamed in high definition, and over 7 million tracks are available in 24-bit Ultra HD.

Cons: Amazon Music Unlimited doesnt seem quite as effective in making recommendations as many of its competitors, Spotify in particular. And while you dont have to pay for Prime Music, its 2 million songs amount to a thin selection compared with what you get from other streaming services.
