Ungated Categories On Amazon
Fortunately, many categories are automatically open for all Amazon sellers, including new ones. These are an excellent start for most sellers and often a way to get experience.
The list of ungated categories on Amazon in 2021:
- Baby *
- Tools & Home Improvement
- Video Games*Despite these categories being far more accessible, some restrictions may still apply regarding subcategories. Additionally, during the busy holiday season, restrictions apply to anything in the Toys and Games category.
More Qualifiers To Selling Toys & Games Merchant Fulfilled On Amazon In Q4
Amazon has three other requirements, and points out that these do NOT refer to orders that use FBA:
- Your pre-fulfillment cancel rate must be no greater than 1.75% from September 15, 2020 through October 14, 2020.
- Your late shipment rate must be no greater than 4% from September 15, 2020 through October 14, 2020.
- Your order defect rate must be no greater than 1% as of October 14, 2020.
In other words, Amazon wants to make sure that if you Merchant Fulfill, you have done so successfully. They want to make sure that sellers ship on time, dont have a bunch of returns, and that they dont cancel orders on buyers. If you have never merchant fulfilled, then you meet these criteria pretty much by default.
If youre unsure of your status, you can check cancel rate, late shipment rate and order defect rate in the Performance section of Seller Central.
Amazon says it will provide final notification about eligibility before November 2. You will likely get updates on your status between August 1 and the final decision.

Selling on Amazon is often a highly accessible entrance to entrepreneurship. Undoubtedly, the platform is one of the largest marketplaces, which offers endless possibilities for sellers. However, gated categories on Amazon make the journey to success a bit more difficult but not impossible. It is a common mistake among new sellers to find a perfect product to sell, only to realize Amazon restricts the listing.
Similarly to any other business, Amazon actively tries to protect its customers from harmful products. Consequently, this has led to targeting new sellers with these category or product based restrictions.
If you wish to understand Amazon gated categories and how to get approval to sell these products, this is the guide for you.

The Best Way To Check For Product Restrictions On Amazon
The truth of the matter is Amazon changes restrictions more often than they should! It keeps us on our toes for sure. One day we think a category is gated and then the next it isn’t. We try to keep this post updated, but that’s still not your most accurate source.
So, how could you possibly know what you can/can’t sell?!?
The absolute best way to know for sure is to scan the product with . This will check to see if YOU are eligible to sell the product or not. If you are on your computer, go to add a product and see if there are any restrictions that pop up for the specific item.
If you scan in stores with Scoutify 2, you can even use that to check for restrictions on-the-go!
Here’s what’s important: know if you’re restricted before you buy a product. You never want to be sending in inventory to Amazon that you can’t sell. It will just end up in Stranded Inventory and you’ll have to pay to have it sent back.
If Denied Apply For Approval Again
For cases where you end up getting denied by Amazon, dont hesitate to go back and reapply after 3 to 6 months.
As mentioned earlier, your selling accounts longevity can help you improve your seller metrics, which can help you get automatic approvals in the future.
Pro Tip: Always visit Seller Central to check your active applications to help you decide if you should reapply again. Repeatedly do this every 3-6 months.

Amazon Ungating: How To Request Category Approval
If you are running into category or subcategory restrictions, you might want to try to get approval from Amazon. This can open up a lot of doors for sourcing new products!
Amazon category approval requests aren’t usually complicated.
In some cases, you’ll request approval to sell in a restricted category and will be approved automatically. We refer to this as Automatic Approvals.
This happens randomly and without notice. Amazon doesn’t specify which brands or categories this works for, but usually someone in our Facebook group will alert us all when it happens so everyone else can give it a try as well.
Your success with Automatic Approvals may vary based on the age of your account or seller metrics. But it’s so easy and fast that you might as well try! I recommend that you go through this process for any brand or category that is restricted to you.
In general, you’ll request approval by following these steps to start the process:
1. In Seller Central, click the Inventory link and select Add a Product.
2. Run a search for the item you wish to sell. Or ANY product that you know is listed in that category.
3. In the search results, click the Listing Limitations Apply link across from the restricted item.
4. Click the Request Approval button to begin the application process.
If you get a message along these lines, then you’ve been Automatically approved :
If not, you can try again later or follow Amazon’s instructions for getting approved with supplier invoices.
Pause Your Fba Offer And Activate Fbm Instead
If youve been selling wholesale or private label products and still have some inventory in your warehouse, you can simply pause your offer for Fulfillment by Amazon and replace it with an FBM offer.
This works particularly well if youre the sole seller on the listing since your FBM offer will get the Buy Box in place of the FBA offer. Keep this up until youve reached 25 FBM orders.
If you have only ever sold toys on Amazon using FBA, you may have to go through a bit of a learning curve to master merchant fulfillment.
The most important part is to set up your shipping template so that you wont lose money on orders.
A lot of new sellers get this part wrong and end up with costly situations where buyers pay $4.99 shipping to cover an item that actually cost them $14 to ship!

Check To See If Youre Restricted
At the risk of sounding too basic, the first step in the process needs to be checking to see if youre even restricted from selling an item on Amazon. Whether you are out sourcing in a retail store or at home looking for items online, you need to check whether or not youre restricted before you purchase an item to resell. Theres a few ways to check your restrictions.
- Use the Amazon Seller app to scan the barcode of the item or enter in the barcode under Add a Product. If youre restricted, youll see a message that the item Requires Approval.
- Use the Scoutify app to scan the barcode of the item. If there are restrictions, youll see a bright red restriction button pop up. You can click on that button to see which conditions or formats you are approved for or restricted to sell.
- Log in to Seller Central, hover over Inventory, and click on Add a Product. Next, enter an ASIN or UPC and check your restrictions for that item. If you check your restrictions and find a button that says Sell Yours, then youre not restricted on the item and youre free to list it for sale on Amazon. If you get a notification that you are restricted, just keep reading
Why Are Some Categories Gated On Amazon
It helps to understand the reason Amazon has restricted categories in the first place. Usually it’s because there are a lot of products in that category that are counterfeited, and Amazon wants to reduce its risk. Think about pirated DVDs, fake jewelry, or knockoff watches. They’re all over the place. This is very common at flea-markets and even on eBay.
Amazon wants to make sure you’re a legitimate, honest seller before granting you permission to sell in these somewhat risky categories. It doesn’t want to be known as a platform that’s easy for counterfeiters to use.

Selling Toys During Q4 Approval Tips
Q4 means big things for Amazon sellers. But, sellers may not know whether Amazon will impose requirements on them during this time of year.
If you havent been through that experience before, you may not fully understand what all the fuss is about. In fact, you may not be sure what you should be doing or even what to expect during this period.
Amazon starts sending emails around August to all registered sellers informing them whether they meet the criteria for selling toys on the platform during Q4.
Many sellers are never sure if they will qualify to sell toys in the fourth quarter on Amazon, which causes panic since selling toys during the holiday season is essential for their business.
According to Statista, Amazon is the #1 retailer where Americans buy them online, and as such, it presents huge opportunities for sellers to boost their yearly profits during Q4.
Here are some tips to help you meet Amazons requirements to sell toys during the holiday period.
Why Does Amazon Restrict Or Gate Certain Categories
Why Amazon restricts some of the categories on the marketplace all ties back to their A-to-z guarantee. They want buyers to have the best experience possible, and that means policing how and where some items are sold.
Unfortunately, shady sellers have cropped up all over Amazon, advertising counterfeit, low-quality or faulty products and leaving a trail of unhappy buyers in their wake. To combat this, Amazon designated some categories as restricted to try and cut down on this problem.
But restricted doesnt mean not allowed, as some sellers are able to get permission to sell in those categories. To do that, they must submit special applications and get them approved by Amazon before they can start listing in the gated categories.

Subcategory Gating Is The New Trend
Amazon is constantly refining their list of gated categories in an effort to improve the process and better meet their quality goals. In general, Amazons strategy seems to be moving in the direction of gating particularly sensitive subcategories. For example, Health & Beauty is no longer a gated category, but the more sensitive subcategories under Health & Beauty are now gated . Amazon has not published a master list of gated subcategories, so there isnt a super quick way to figure out if a particular subcategory is gated or not. Before you decide to sell any product, it is a good idea to do a check in Seller Central to see if there are listing restrictions or if you need to apply for ungating. You can use the below process to identify current listing limitations for any products you want to sell:
Here is a non-exhaustive list of subcategories that are reportedly gated:
- Baby Activity Gear
- Sports Nutrition
A number of sellers have reported a $3,000 application fee for certain subcategory ungating approvals. Again, Amazon hasnt explicitly published anything about which subcategories have application fees or what those fee amounts are, but you should be prepared that this could be a factor in your application process.
