How Do I Use My Amazon Fire Tablet As A Beginner
If this is the first time you’ve ever used an Amazon Fire tablet, or if you’ve just purchased one and haven’t set it up yet, you’ll need to go through some steps to create an account and secure your device.
The button controls on the Amazon Fire tablet are simple. The top of the tablet includes the micro-USB charging port, power button, and volume controls.
Amazon Fire tablets made after 2015 have a Micro SD card slot where you can insert an SD Card for extra storage capacity.
If you own the latest Amazon Fire 10 tablet, you’ll have a 5-megapixel camera on the back of the tablet, without any flash feature.
When you first charge and then start your Amazon Fire tablet, you’ll need to set up your initial login PIN. This will be used each time you power on your tablet. This can be any four-digit number.
As part of the initial setup, you’ll be asked to log in to an account you want to use with this tablet. For the easiest access to all of your Amazon products and services, log in using your regular Amazon account email and password.
You can not use an Amazon Fire tablet without an Amazon account. Just select the New to Amazon option and you will be taken through the steps to create a free Amazon account so you can use your Amazon Fire tablet.
Using Amazons Freetime And Multiple Profiles
Instead of using simple parental controls, we recommend creating Child Profiles. You can create multiple profiles to be used across devices and get some help from Amazon restricting content. If you didnt choose a lock screen PIN or password when you first set your Fire tablet up, then you must start there. This will block your child from accessing your profile or the parental controls menu.
- Go to Settings > Security > Lock-Screen Passcode and toggle it on.
- Please choose a password or PIN that youll remember, but make sure that its not something your child could easily guess.
- Now its time to set up a profile for your child. Go to Settings > Profiles & Family Library and tap Add a Child Profile.
- Youll have to enter a name and birthdate.
- For children under best to select Use Amazon FreeTime There is also a Teen Profiles option, recommended for kids aged nine and older.
- Once the profile has been created, youll get to choose the apps, games, books, and videos from your content library that you want to allow them to access. As a shortcut, Amazon provides an option to Add All Kids Titles. These are chosen based on the age you entered during the profile creation.
- Repeat the process to add as many other child profiles as you need.

Switch Up Your Home Screen
Amazon’s home screen looks unlike any other Android device but it doesn’t need to stay that way. The Play Store is filled with launchers, that can bring the classic Android look and feel to your new tablet.
If you’re looking for as close to a “stock Android” experience as possible whatever that means in 2022, anyway Nova Launcher is a solid bet. Lawnchair is another a fan favorite, thanks to its Pixel-inspired design. However, if you’re looking to try something a little different, Niagara Launcher is worth a gander its simplified take on the home screen works really well on a tablet-sized display.
Unfortunately, Amazon doesn’t allow you to set a default launcher within its settings menu, which means some extra steps are necessary to get this to work. Using ADB commands to set a default launcher on Fire tablets isn’t super hard, and our guide walks you through every step of the process. We use Lawnchair to demonstrate how to replace your home screen, but with an additional third-party app, moving to services like Nova or Niagara is super simple as well.
Adjust The Screen Brightness Of Your Fire Tablet
Keep pace with changes in your environment by dimming or adjusting your tablet’s screen.

What Is Amazon Kids+
Amazon Kids+ is a label that Amazon applies to further subscription content. This was previously called Fire for Kids Unlimited, or FreeTime Unlimited in the US. As we’ve mentioned, this is a service that comes free for 1-year with the Fire Kids Edition tablet, but you can also subscribe to it separately, if you’d rather buy the standard tablet.
Pocket-lint daily is a daily tech newsletter curated by Stuart Miles, Pocket-lint’s founder. Find out how to get it every morning.
Amazon restructured the pricing in June 2022, so there’s one price for Prime subscibers and one for non-Prime subscibers. The option for a single child has been removed and now all subscribers can have up to four children using a subsciption. There are options for monthly or yearly subscriptions. Amazon also offers a free 1-month trial, if you want to give it a go.
Amazon Kids+ provides a couple of benefits over the regular Amazon Kids offering that comes with all Fire tablets. Amazon curates content and makes it available to children through the Fire tablet, so that they have access to age-appropriate books, apps, videos and web content.
This opens up the range of content that’s available to children, allowing them to make some additional selections, like accessing more books, without parental intervention. Unlike the content you might assign, this is all verified appropriate by Amazon. You retain the ability to add more content, as above, if you want to.
Installing A File Browser From The Amazon App Store
This should be an optional step for most users, but certain Amazon devices have had trouble installing the necessary APKs onto their devices without installing a file manager onto your Fire tablet from the Amazon App Store first. If youre having an issue getting the files above to install on your device, we recommend installing File Commander, a free app that makes it easy to view the files stored on your tablet. Its nothing special, but for this process, we dont need anything too powerful to finish installing the Play Store.
To reiterate, most people will not need a file browser to finish this process, but enough users have reported difficulty with installing APKs without a file manager downloaded on their device that its good to know about. Once youve completed the process listed above, you can uninstall File Commander.
Alternatively, you can also use the Docs application on your device, which comes pre-installed and includes the ability to browse local files instead of using an application like File Commander. Docs will allow you to browse your Downloads folder and select the app installation files one at a time if you accidentally swiped them away from your notification tray or if youre having difficulties installing the apps on Fire OS 184.108.40.206.

Try An Amazon Fire Tablet Stand
With the right case or a useful stand, you can make your Amazon Fire tablet stand up. Even if you prefer a DIY tablet stand, various useful alternatives exist online.
Many stands also have built-in charging connectors, although most simply prop your tablet on a table or other surface. Whichever you choose, it’s best to find a stand that will support the tablet in both landscape and portrait mode.
Furthermore, many tablet cases are available for the Amazon Fire. These are usually typical “folio-style” cases with a standing option, although some alternatives are available.
Reviewing Your Childs Activity
One final thing worth mentioning is the ability to review what your child has been doing. If you allow web access, you can go to Settings > Profiles & Family Library, choose your childs profile, and tap View Your Childs Web History to see all the web pages they have viewed. Theres also a handy extra tab entitled Attempted, which shows you any blocked sites they tried to access.
If you signed up for FreeTime Unlimited, then you can visit the Parent Dashboard. This gives you interesting insights into exactly what your child has been doing on their Fire tablet. The time they spent on different activities is broken down into Books, Videos, Apps, and Web, so you can see at-a-glance how much time theyve spent in each for today. Choose one, and youll see a complete breakdown of the time they spent on each app, game, book, video, or web page.
For some pieces of content, youll see a small orange speech bubble on the right. Click on that, and you can get a summary of the app or video in question and find a set of questions or potential discussion topics to get your child talking about that activity. Its an excellent prompt to help you engage with them about what theyve been doing and helps round out the superb suite of parental controls that Amazon has to offer.

On The Subject Of Kids
Amazon provides a completely unique child account option on the Amazon Fire tablet. The child profile for the Amazon Fire tablet looks completely different from the standard user profile. It also blocks off certain things, has a kid-safe web browser, and it limits what they can see and do. You also cannot make payments inside a child profile without adult confirmation. If you have kids, and they use your Amazon Fire tablet, you NEED this feature.
Rebooting And Logging Into Google Play
Once all four applications have been downloaded onto your tablet, complete the process by restarting your Fire tablet. Press and hold the power button on your device until a prompt appears asking if you wish to turn off your tablet. After your device is powered off, reboot it by pressing and holding the power button again. When the tablet has booted back to your lock screen, were ready to finish the process by setting up Google Play.
Head into your list of apps and select the Google Play Store from the list . Instead of opening up the store, it will open Google Account Manager in order to gain your Google account credentials. Youll see a display showing the tablet being set up for use, and then Google will ask for your Gmail address and password. Finally, the device will ask if you wish to back up your accounts apps and data to Google Drive.
Whether you wish to do so is up to you, but its not necessary for this step. All told, Google Play should take about two minutes total to finish installing. Once youve logged in and completed the setup process, youll be dropped into the Google Play Store, the same app that is used on most Android devices.

How To Turn On Amazon Fire Tablet Location Services
Amazons Fire range of tablets have come a long way from their start as a glorified e-book reader. These days theyre fully fledged smart tablets in their own right. And as far as their market share is concerned, they seem to be going from strength to strength. Theyre user friendly and have access to loads of Amazon-centric apps and services that enable you to enjoy all of your media wherever you are.
One of the things synonymous with smart devices these days is GPS location tracking. However, because the Fire series of tablets are relatively midrange products compared to something like an iPad, they dont actually come fitted with a GPS chip. That means that theyre limited to Wi-Fi positioning only, which is less versatile but still pretty handy, especially in cities.
Is Google Play Available For Amazon Fire Tablet
Because the Amazon Fire tablet runs on Amazons custom FireOS and Amazon, like Apple, likes to keep its users inside its walled garden, there is no support for Google Play on the Amazon Fire tablet. Instead, you have to use Amazons App Store. But dont worry, nearly all of the most popular apps are present and accounted for inside the Amazon Apps Store. Is it better than Google Play? Hell no! But it is good enough, so dont stress it too much.
You cannot download any of Googles core applications, however, and, sadly, that includes YouTube, Chrome, and Gmail. Why? Google hasnt released them inside the , likely as a punishment to Amazon for not using the Google Play Store on its tablet devices. If you want to watch YouTube, you have to do it through the built-in browser.

Name Your Amazon Fire Tablet
It’s a smart idea to give your Amazon Fire tablet a name. This is particularly useful if you use various Amazon apps across a range of devices. For example, you might have a phone with the Kindle app installed but want to send a book to your Fire tablet. If the devices are properly named, it makes delivering eBooks easier.
To set a name for your Amazon Fire tablet:
It’s that simple and really does make device management easier. You’ll also be able to spot the tablet quickly on your home network.
How Do You Sync Kindle Across All Devices
When you sync Kindle across all devices, you ensure that your Kindle books are backed up and available on every device you own. This process also makes sure that your bookmarks, highlights, and notes are consistently updated on all devices.
To sync Kindle across all devices, connect your devices to the internet and then sign in to your Amazon account. Once youre signed in, go to Manage Your Content and Devices and select the Devices tab. Here, youll see a list of all devices associated with your Amazon account. Select the checkbox next to the device you want to sync and then click Sync Now.

Email On Amazon Fire Hd Tablet
Setting up your email on the new Fire HD 10 is essentially the same as it is on any other mobile device. From the home screen tap on the Email app icon to launch it.
If youre settings up a typical web-based email account such as Gmail or Microsoft, type in your email address, password, and then tap Next.
The email app provides advanced setup options, too. Typically, youd use to connect to an Exchange server or if you need to change security and port settings. Note that if you have 2FV or 2FA enabled on your email account, and you should, then you will need to use the second verification method the provider uses such as a text to your phone. Or, in the case of setting up one of my Microsoft email accounts, I needed to generate an app password.
Once you have everything set up correctly, the app works as you would expect a mobile email app to work. At first, you swipe through a short set of basic instructions on how to use the app.
Again, its a straight-forward and intuitive user experience, with the ability to create folders and make sure your messages are synced. And, for all of you Emoji fans, the keyboard does include a good amount of them by default.
Of course, you can go into Settings to create an email signature, customize notifications, set an Out-of-Office Message for each account. You also change other settings so the app works in a way thats best for you.

For the money, most Android tablets aren’t a very good deal. At the high end, hardware is marred by less than stellar software offerings. At the low end, are hamstrung by the very limited Appstore, which doesn’t include Google apps, among others.
Android tablets might be getting a boost later this year, but what if you could buy a Fire Tablet for $60 and install the Google Play Store, giving you access to a wider range of apps? You’d have a pretty good deal. A $60 tablet that’s capable of 95 percent of what a $330 iPad can do. In this how-to, we’ll show you how to get Google Play running on your Amazon Fire Tablet. I’ve done this on the previous Fire HD 8 and Fire HD 10 models.
