Amazon Upc Codes: What Are They And Why You Need To Buy Them
Amazon UPC codes comprise a vital part of doing business on .
Without them, it will be next to impossible for you to sell on the .
If you are not familiar with this concept, then fret not my dear reader!
What We Covered
In this article, we are going to take a look at what precisely these UPCs are, why they matter so much, and most importantly, where can you buy them.
What Are Some Other Common Terms In The Amazon Product Id Section Of Amazon Listings
The ASIN is the Amazon Standard Identification Number. It is a 10-digit alphanumeric unique catalog number assigned by Amazon that wont actually be generated until the product is listed.
When creating a new product listing with a UPC code, Amazon assigns the new listing an ASIN identification. This is how the systems at Amazon keep track of which sellers are selling which versions of which items when multiple people list the same products.
When creating a brand on Amazon you will be given a unique identifier for your brand to list products under.
The ID can only be used when adding new products that are part of the approved registered Brand list.
Registering your brand on Amazon allows you to circumvent the entire UPC code stage of listing a product. It allows you to sell products without a UPC code. Its something to consider once your sales ramp up on the platform.
A GTIN is part of another code, such as an EAN or UPC code. These are 14-digit codes used to identify products, services, and items. Think of them as the umbrella that collects the GS1 barcodes well be using, including UPC codes.
Keep things simple by keeping in mind that all product listings require a UPC code. This should be standard practice for you.
How To Get A Upc Barcode
If you havent designed or packaged your labels for your product then you may obtain a digital barcode file directly from GS1 to include in the labeling and packaging of your product. Mostly all manufacturers can be comfortable with this idea of working with UPC codes and know how to incorporate them from a digital file.
If you already labeled and packaged your products then you can easily order adhesive barcode labels that stick onto your products packaging or on the product itself.
It is vital that the barcodes you are using are clearly visible and are also accurate to the information on the GS1 database.

Assign A Unique Product Number
You will need to create a unique product number for each of your products. This will be based on how many digits are in your IRN.
Using the example above, if you have 9,145 products, you will start assigning product numbers from 0001 all the way through to 9145. These unique product numbers will then be added to your company prefix to form 11 out of the 12 numbers in the UPC.
You can assign the IRNs to each product yourself and use GS1’s check digit calculator, available for free as part of your membership, to calculate the twelfth digit of the UPC. However, if you have a large range of products, keeping track of all the IRNs can be a challenge. As part of your GS1 membership, you will have access to their online Data Hub, which will help you to create, track, and double-check your IRNs.
What Is A Gtin Exemption
A GTIN exemption is when Amazon allows you to sell generic or self-branded products without a UPC code. Instead, they provide an Amazon-generated label with a non-UPC barcode. Traditionally, GTIN exemptions were hard to get. Many sellers reported waiting weeks or months for Amazon to approve their request. In 2019, Amazon has made this process much more smooth — the application only takes a few minutes, and they respond to most requests in two business days.

Amazon Frequently Asked Questions
Are suppliers required to have UPC or ISBN barcodes for items/books being sold on Amazon?
YES! In order to set-up items in Amazons brand registry, users are required to enter a UPC number and an ISBN as part of the item set-up procedure. NOTE: There are a some exemptions to the UPC/ISBN requirement, refer to Amazons UPC/ISBN Exemption policy if you believe your company does not need a UPC/ISBN product identifier.
Does Amazon allow suppliers to use UPC barcode numbers obtained from a UPC Reseller?
As of May 2016 the answer is NO, UPC barcode numbers from UPC Resellers are NOT ALLOWED. Amazon revised the UPC section on Amazon Seller Central that explicitly states Amazon requires sellers to obtain valid UPCs from the GS1 and further states that Amazon will confirm UPC barcodes are registered to their sellers and not 3rd parties. For many years before this announcement, some suppliers obtained UPC numbers from UPC resellers who advertised with discount prices online and on ebay. To view Amazon UPC Requirements go to
We have worked with several Amazon suppliers who reported that during the item set-up procedure, Amazon flagged their UPC numbers for either of the following reasons:
- UPC Numbers were already being used by a different supplier
- UPC numbers were not issued to supplier being set-up.
In both cases, Amazon required the supplier to license a UPC Company Prefix from the GS1.

Place Barcode On Your Product
Last, but definitely not least: put your barcode on your product!
If you havent packaged or designed your labels for your product, you can obtain a digital barcode file directly from GS1 to incorporate it into the packaging and labeling of your product.
Almost all manufacturers will be comfortable with the idea of working with UPC codes and understand how to incorporate them from a digital file. If you have already packaged and labeled your products, you can order adhesive barcode labels to stick onto your product or packaging.
As an Amazon seller, its important to place your barcode in a place that is visible and scannable.
Avoid placing your barcode on the edge of the package, and make sure theres enough white space around the barcode so its scannable. Make sure that the barcodes you use are printed clearly, sized correctly, and match the information on the GS1 database.

What Is A Gtin
A GTIN is a Global Trade Item Number that identifies individual products not to be confused with an actual product barcode. GTINs are a combination of GS1 US-issued company prefix numbers and a unique product number, plus a check digit that helps to ensure the GTIN is created correctly.
GTINs can be encoded into different types of barcodes:
Its important to assign each product a unique GTIN, and you must ensure that every variation of an item is assigned a globally unique number.
Keep in mind, in most Amazon categories, sellers are required to use a separate UPC for multi-pack products, and they must also indicate the item package quantity when listing multi-packs. Product bundles are composed of different products and each bundle requires its own unique UPC . For more info, check out Amazons Product Bundling Policy and How Products are Defined.
A GTIN, along with a UPC code, can be used anywhere in the world. GS1 is the only official global provider of GS1 GTINs and EAN and UPC barcodes.

What are Bar Codes and QR Codes?
Most people are quite familiar with bar codes as they are seen on the daily at most retail and grocery stores.
Barcodes began by automating supermarket checkout systems. Their use has spread to many other tasks that are generically referred to as automatic identification and data capture .
1. Barcodes eliminate the possibility of human error. The occurrence of errors for manually entered data is significantly higher than that of barcodes. A barcode scan is fast and reliable, and takes infinitely less time than entering data by hand.
2. Using a barcode system reduces employee training time. It takes only minutes to master the hand-held scanner for reading barcodes. Furthermore, employees do not have to gain familiarity with an entire inventory or pricing procedure.
3. Barcodes are inexpensive to design and print, and are versatile. Generally they cost mere pennies, regardless of their purpose, or where they will be affixed. They can be customized economically, in a variety of finishes and materials. They are used for any kind of data collection such as pricing, inventory, tracking, and shipping.
5. Barcodes promote better decision making. Because data is obtained rapidly and accurately, it is possible to make more informed decisions. Better decision making ultimately saves both time and money.

What Barcode Do I Use For Amazon Bundles
Just like multipacks, make sure your request does not fall under the restricted brands list. You cannot make listings under these brand names without explicit permission from the brand owner.
Most of the time a bundle will qualify for a GTIN exemption, so theres no need to purchase a UPC. Do not list a bundle under the UPC of one of the products within the bundle . This would allow another seller to change your listing to the correct product in the future.

Signed Letter Of Ownership And Original Gs1 Certificate For Our Upc Barcodes
At Buyabarcode.com, all of our UPC barcodes were purchased by us directly from GS1 and therefore we can legally provide you with the Signed Letter of Ownership along with the original GS1 certificate. In fact, we are the only seller of barcodes aside from GS1 who can legally provide you with these documents and allow you to sell your products on Amazon. None of the other sellers of barcodes can satisfy any of requirements and thus the UPC barcodes they sell will not work.
Identify Each Product With A Gtin
The next step is to assign your products unique product numbers, aka GTINs.
Your GTIN should be a combination of your company prefix, a unique product number that you assign, and a check digit that helps make sure that your GTIN is created correctly.
On Amazon, UPC codes must always total 12 digits : 11 digits, plus that check digit. Your check digit is calculated by GS1 based on the previous 11 digits of your barcode.

GS1 sounds like some sort of alien prefix, but it actually refers to the non-profit organization responsible for global information standards for business communication. Its goal is to optimize the global supply chain and prevent problems before they occur.
Different companies have their own GS1 branchesGS1 US is the United States GS1 entity. As such, if your business is based in the states, you will need to register with GS1 US to purchase UPCs and acquire your business six-digit prefix.1
Step #1: Apply for GS1 Membership and Obtain a UPC Prefix License
Before anything else, you need to apply for membership with GS1. Then, you can fill out their company prefix application. Youll recall that your UPC prefix is the first six digits of the UPC number, which connects the Amazon product to your company.
These prefixes are complex beasts. You can barcode your prefix onto as little as 10 unique products or as many as 100,000 individual products. However, you will need a barcode for each product variation, which includes differences in:
Before you start the application process, confirm the prefix capacityor the number of products that need barcode labelsyou will need currently or will need in the future. GS1 US provides a free barcode estimator tool to help you complete this step accurately.
Once you know your needs, the prefix application will only take a few minutes to complete. Once you choose your prefix capacity, you can then complete your purchase.
What To Do With The Upc Codes
Once youve purchased the UPCs, your next step is to attach them to your products, either physically, digitally or both.
For digital use, download the UPC as a JPEG, as well as its number . On your Amazon product listing, enter that number into the Product ID field and select, from the dropdown menu, what type of code it is .

What About Amazon
ASIN: Amazon Standard Identification Number
This number is auto-assigned to your listing on Amazon. You cannot change or edit it. It is the easiest way to identify any listing on Amazon. You can even search a product by typing in the ASIN on the search bar.
For books, the ASIN is the same as the ISBN number.
Itâs also in the URL of your Amazon listing, right after dp and before ?ref. It always begins with B0.
GCID: Global Catalogue Identifier
When you enroll your products in Amazonâs brand registry, you may use a GTIN or a GCID code. Amazon provides the GCID code.
You fill out unique key attributes for each SKU you provide, and Amazon will assign each product with a GCID.
Note: you have to use Amazonâs IP accelerator to start the trademark process or complete the trademarking process on your own if you want to be brand registered.
Hereâs how it worksâ¦
1. Select GCID in the drop down menu.
2. Enter all the unique product identifiers such as the Product name, brand name, manufacturer name, except for the Product ID, etc.
3. Amazon will automatically generate a GCID under the Product ID field.
If you enter a GTIN-UPC code into the product identifier field then Amazon will not give you a GCID number.
FNSKU: Fulfillment Network Stock-Keeping Unit
Amazon gives you an FNSKU for each product variation when you ship the product to Amazonâs fulfillment center. For example, if you are selling green pirate mugs, every single green pirate mug gets the same FNSKU.
