Does Amazon Plan To Use Sim Cards In The Future
There are many speculations that Amazon might develop Fire tablets that could use SIM cards in the future. According to an article
These e-Sim cards will be faster than the traditional SIMs, as they would be able to support higher data speeds of up to 1 GB per second across mobile data networks. The e-Sims will also be soldered into the device and programmed remotely to prevent frequency loss which is common in plastic SIMs that lose signals.
No one is sure when this will happen, but it would be a great leap forward if and when it happens for the Kindle and Fire tablets.
Why The Fire Hd 8 Does Not Have Sim Card Slot
The Fire HD 8 was created with a purpose, and that purpose does not involve making phone calls over cellular data.
The tablet was created to give users the experience of enjoying reading books and watching videos on a large screen. All of these can be done without SIM cards or cellular data.
You can use WiFi to stream and watch videos, listen to audiobooks, and read ebooks on the Fire HD 8 tablet. If you would like to learn more about Fire HD, check out this article.

Choosing Between Internal Storage And Portable Storage
If you have a Fire 7 2019 , a Fire HD 10 2019 or a Fire HD 8 2018 you will be given the option of using the SD card as internal storage or portable storage.
Using the SD card as internal storage essentially means making it part of the permanent internal storage of your Fire tablet.
The benefit of choosing this option is that it allows you to download larger files .
However, I recommend NOT choosing this option .
If you choose to make the card part of your internal storage YOU CANNOT REMOVE IT FROM THE DEVICE.
If you do
- It will not work on any other device
- Apps you installed on your Fire whilst the card was inserted may no longer work properly
- You will get a pop-up message telling you to either re-insert the SD card, or to select “Forget”. If you select “Forget”, then you will lose all the data on the card
It’s also worth noting that – if the SD cards malfunctions in any way – all the data on it will be lost!
If you choose to use the SD card as portable storage, it will be formatted differently and you will then be able to remove it and use it in different devices, and to transfer content between them.
The downside is that portable storage cannot be used to store apps and their data. But given the problems associated with doing this , my preference would be to use portable storage for everything that can comfortably be moved, and my device’s internal storage for apps.
How To Use An Sd Card With A Fire Tablet
Do you own an Amazon Fire tablet? If yes, did you know you can install apps directly on an SD card attached to your tablet? Thats right.
With some Fire tablets having as little as 8GB of built-in storage, youre forced to be selective in terms of storage. You cant install every app you want, neither can you save every video or music track you come across.
But with an SD card, you can add up to 1TB of storage to your tablet and install as many files as you want. You can even use it to expand your internal storage and create space for more apps.
This article will show how to use an SD card with a Fire tablet running Fire OS 7.3.1 or later.

Getting The ‘sd Card Unexpectedly Removed’ Message
I actually received this message after using my Fire once the SD card was successfully installed. It definitely hadn’t been ‘unexpectedly removed’ so I simply ignored the message and everything continued to work just fine.
I’ve also heard from other visitors who have received the same – incorrect – message on random occasions!
If the problem persists, try safely ejecting and re-installing the SD card.
To Format Your Sd Card For Portable Storage From The Outset
After initially inserting your SD card, select the option to ‘Use as portable storage’.
You’ll receive confirmation that your SD card is now successfully up and running.
You’ll then be taken to the ‘storage options’ on your device to decide which types of files you would like to automatically store on your SD card.
You can use portable storage to download music, movies, TV shows, books, periodicals and audiobooks, plus store your photos and personal videos. You cannot use it for downloads from the Silk browser or email – these can only be downloaded to – and stored on – your device’s internal storage.
As mentioned earlier, you cannot opt to download apps to portable storage.
Moving existing content to your portable SD card
If you already have videos, books, photos etc stored on your device that you would now like to store on your SD card instead, you will need to…
- Delete them from your device
- Re-download them from the cloud
If you’ve adjusted your settings as shown above, then your photos, books etc will automatically download to the SD card instead of your device.
For example, if you want to move a video to the SD card…
- Ensure that you have activated the setting to download videos to your SD card
- Tap “Videos”
- Find the video you want to move
- Long press the title, then tap “Delete”
- Long press it again, then tap “Download”
This will re-download the video directly to the SD card.

Inserting The Micro Sd Card
The Fire HD kids tab comes with about 32 GB of space, some of which is used by preinstalled apps , most of these are typically on the parents account. With all that you should have about 24 GB left to download apps the children will be interested in. Therefore if you need more space to download content for the child, you will need to insert a micro SD card upto 1 TB.
Inserting the card is quite easy and will not require the SD card tray to be pulled out, so you wont need a pin. Remove the tab from its protective cover, lift the Micro SD card slot cover, insert the card with the front facing up, push it in till you hear a click.
We inserted the Samsung 32 GB EVO plus Micro SD card, and by default the system sends you an alert on incompatibility requiring you to remove the card, or format it. To set up the SD card, you will need to be on the parent account on the tab.
Fire Your Way Up To Bigger Storage
The Fire tablet is an excellent device for reading books, playing games, and watching movies on the go. However, it comes with limited storage, so there may not be space for all your favorite files and apps.
With an SD card, though, you can add as much as 1TB of storage that can be used however you want.
However, SD cards come with some downsides. For example, some apps may run more slowly when installed to external storage. In addition, apps transferred from your built-in storage to the SD card cannot be moved back. You can only download them afresh.
Nonetheless, an SD card can help you accommodate more apps on your device and eliminate the need for external hard drives.

Setting Up Sd Cards With Fire Os 73
Open the door covering the microSD card reader and insert a card.
If this is your first time using this SD card with your tablet, you may see a notification that says Unsupported Storage. If you do, you can tap that notification to open a menu that offers two options:
The first option allows you to install apps to the microSD card, freeing up space in your Fire tablets built-in storage. You can also use the SD card to store media and other files, but if you remove the card youll lose access to any apps installed to it. So only choose this option if you dont plan to remove or swap storage cards frequently.
If you choose the second option, you can use the SD card to store music, movies, and other files, but not apps. This is the better option if you plan to use an SD card to transfer files, movies, or other content between devices.
Once youve made your choice, tap the option and Fire OS will ask if you want to format this storage device.
Note that any data thats already on your SD card will be erased, so make sure to back up any important files and then go ahead and format your storage device.

Safely Remove The Micro Sd Card From Your Fire Tablet
If you ever want to remove the Micro SD card from your Fire Tablet, you should open the Settings app, tap Storage, tap Safely Remove SD Card, and tap OK. You can then gently press on the SD card and it will pop out.
If you need more storage, you can always buy multiple Micro SD cards and swap them out to access different videos and other media files. Bear in mind that apps you install onto your SD card wont be available unless that specific SD card is plugged in.
Formatting The Micro Sd Card
When you insert the Micro SD card, the Fire HD tab will complain that your Micro SD card is incompatible with the Fire tab. So you need to format it first.
Both new and used SD cards will require formatting for use in the kids fire tab. Of Course the used card means loosing all the data stored. The card can be formatted for two options
- As extra storage for the tab: Here the card will be used for both app and media storage and is not intended for removal from the tab.
- As a portable storage: Here the card is used as storage for media you want to move between your devices. This includes Movies,tv shows, music, photos, personal videos, books and periodicals each of which you can individually choose whether or not to save on the SD card in the settings. These control options are only available for the portable storage option.
Once you select which option to go with the card will be formatted and ready for use. You can switch between the two options any time by going to the parent account, in the drawer Select Settings > Storage > Format as internal storage . For a card previously formatted as internal storage Select Settings > Storage > Format as Portable storage. Note that all formatting erases the data on the card, so be sure to save it elsewhere prior to this.
Format as portable storage.
Convert the SD card to internal storage.
To switch from portable storage to internal storage, go to settings > storage > format as internal storage as shown below.

Using Sd Cards As Internal Storage
Once your SD card has been formatted for use as internal storage, youll be greeted by a screen asking if you would like to Move content to storage device.
This will free up internal storage space by transferring data such as eBooks, photos, videos, documents, and other files to the SD card. But this step will not transfer any installed apps to your SD card. Youll have to do that manually, as described below.
During the file transfer process, which can take some time, certain apps may not work. Amazon also advises against removing the SD card and suggests keeping your tablet charged.
If youd prefer to move your content later, or have more control over which content is moved, you can tap the Move Content Later option rather than the button marked Move Content.
Whether you move your content or not, you can now open the Settings app and go to the Storage option described in the section above. But this time youll see a different set of options.
Rather than toggles to choose which content is downloaded and stored on an SD card automatically, you have the following options:
- Move content to Internal Storage .
- Move Apps to SD Card
- Format as Portable Storage
In the screenshot above youll notice that 8 apps on my tablet are available to be moved. But thats just a fraction of all the apps on my tablet.
One thing to keep in mind before transferring your apps is that while moving them to external storage is a 1-click process, transferring them back to internal storage is not.
