Choose Your Category Wisely
As a self-publishing author, you need to have a clear vision of the type of book youre writing. In other words, you have to pick your niche.
With Amazon, you’re allowed to choose two niches, i.e., categories. That means your book will both appear as a search result and compete with other titles from the bunch, so choose wisely. If youre serious about making money as a self-publisher, this can make or break it for you.
The solution is to be strategic. Instead of basing your decision on the actual subject matter, you should try finding a less competitive category for your book. Of course, it has to be at least somewhat connected to the topic. If you publish a cookbook under Science Fiction, you didn’t beat the system you ensured your work would go unnoticed.
All it takes is doing a little digging before you publish. Luckily, Amazon makes it pretty easy to research categories on their website. Heres how to do it:

How Many Books Are Sold
Lets say were making $7.60 per book. Now all we need to know is how many books are being sold to calculate our income as a self-published author on Amazon. Theres no real way to know how many books youll sell until you try, but there is a way to roughly determine how many books other authors are selling on Amazon.
All you need is the books Best Sellers Rank and a calculator. For example, lets look at The Cyborg Tinkerer by Meg LaTorre and calculate what she potentially makes per month in Amazon sales.
If we scroll down to the BSR information, The Cyborg Tinkerer is currently ranked #1,124,955 Then, by inserting that number into an online calculator, like this one from TCKPublishing, we get the estimated number of copies the paperback sells each month.
If we assume LaTorre is selling her paperbacks at the 60% royalty rate, and that sales number calculated with her BSR is accurate, that means shes making roughly $1.50 per month on paperback sales for The Cyborg Tinkerer. If she were selling her book at the price we used in the formula in the previous section, that number would be closer to $30.40 per month.
Thats just one example of how much a self-published book sells. Try plugging in your favorite indie authors numbers and see how much they make to get a few more ideas of what to expect.
How Much Does An Average Self
Stats from Forbes and The Guardian shows that the average earning of self-published authors is $10,000 per year, while half of the authors made just $500 per year.
The fact is many independent authors dont do well. But there really are no average self-published author earnings, which you can see from the information above, $10,000 and $500 are miles apart. And, to be honest I am not even sure how it is possible for the average to be one thing while 50% make something so far from that
What one person makes will vastly differ from another and depends heavily on a multitude of factors.
Different authors achieve different levels of monetary success. Therefore what you make will be determined by
- How good your book is
- How well it fits into the market
- Timing, and
- Strategic marketing

How Do Ebook Royalties Work
Amazon offers two ebook royalty plans: the 70% option and the 35% option. To be eligible for the 70% plan, youll need to do all of the following:
- Publish something thats not in the public domain.
- Price your ebook between $2.99 and $9.99. This price also needs to be at least 20% lower than the lowest list price for a print version.
- Pay for file delivery. This doesnt require any extra effort on your part the delivery fees are automatically deducted from your royalty payments.
Keep in mind that only books sold to customers in certain countries are eligible for the 70% plan. Additional copies sold outside those territories will go on the 35%. Dont worry, the 70%-eligible territories include all the big Anglophone markets the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand in addition to several others, primarily in the EU. If you enroll in KDP Select, the list expands to include Brazil, India, Japan, and Mexico.
Any Resources/tools You Found Helpful To Get Started
I used Elance to find a ghostwriter and I used Fiverr.com to hire a designer who created my book covers.
Scrivener was an awesome tool that made formatting the eBooks really easy for me. Its a word processor that effortlessly compiles text into a Kindle-ready format . I would only recommend using Scrivener if you and your ghostwriters are both using a Mac.
Microsoft Word is sufficient enough to get the job done otherwise. Copyscape is an awesome free tool you can use to make sure youre not uploading any plagiarized work.

Amazon Hot New Releases List
As weve mentioned above, Amazon gives extra exposure to new releases books in the first 30 days of their launches. You might have heard of the Amazon 30-day cliff: a term authors use to describe how their sales plummet a month after their books release.
Whats responsible for the extra exposure given to new books? Mostly, the Hot New Releases list. The list itself isnt that easy to find while browsing Amazon its also hidden in the sidebar. But its often featured on the main Kindle Store homepage, and is also a primary driver of email recommendations. Whenever you receive an email from Amazon promoting the best new releases in Self-Help, you know where that email is coming from.

Expanding The Portfolio And Branching Into Other Languages
Sam The Speedy Sloth is Matthews best-selling book, but he has a number of other titles and has published his books in various languages.
Matthew studied languages at university and speaks several different languages himself. So, reprinting his books in other languages is something that came naturally to him.
He started with German versions of his books, as he noticed that the German Amazon store is the second most popular in terms of revenue after the U.S. store.
Even though he speaks German, Matthew hired a native speaker to be sure the text was 100% fluent. All he had to do was swap the text and upload his file, and he said hes been making a good amount of sales.

One recently learned trick for me is to offer one cheap additional ebook before the table of contents in your ebook. That way, it shows up in Amazons Look Inside the Book excerpt, and exposes readers to more of your items.
Flip to the end of my ebooks, and youll see a link to every single product I offer. Dont forget to update your endpapers in your ebooks as you add new products. Your reader is now a qualified buyer from you, and that means theyre a good bet to buy additional things from you.

Format Your Kindle Ebook For Kindle Direct Publishing
Unfortunately, you can’t just upload a word document or a PDF to Amazon. Your book needs to be in the special Kindle format.
You could go out and learn how to format the book yourself however, there are a lot of quirks and it’s very simple to just hire someone off Upwork to do it for you.
We hired someone for $50 on Upwork to get our book in the proper format to upload to Kindle. It’s that easy.
However, if you really want to learn the steps for formatting your book to the Kindle format, you can go to the .
There are tools provided like Kindle create. Or you can hire someone else to take care of all the Kindle formatting headaches. Especially if you started writing everything in Microsoft Word.
Skipping those formatting headaches is often well worth the money. Especially when you see that ready to load ebook file all ready to go.
Pick Categories With Under 10000 Titles
Some categories are more competitive than others. If you can, try to slot your book into niche sub-categories with under 10,000 books, which will give you a much better chance of climbing up the Best Sellers and Popular Lists.
Of course, picking the right categories can be a bit of a balancing act. You dont necessarily want to target the smallest sub-category possible some will barely have 100 books because those will naturally have fewer buyers. Youll want to find the sweet spot: categories that arent cutthroat-competitive or hopelessly obscure.
If youre new to this and are unsure how to pick the right categories to sell ebooks on Amazon, dont worry! We have an .

Create A Great Kdp Book Title
There are tons of Kindle Direct Publishing books out there with horrible titles. You can tell that someone just thought something up and slapped it on the cover. There wasn’t any thought process, they didn’t ask their friends, and they didn’t get feedback.
But the title of a book is so critical.
I know that the old saying says, Don’t judge a book by its cover. However, the reality is that people DO make snap judgments about not just the cover design, but also the title and overall feeling they get when they read it and the book description.
The title is your chance to capture the attention of a potential buyer and intrigue them enough to buy the book.
The principles for writing a great book title are very similar to writing a great blog post title or email subject line. If you study what great copy writers have advised, you are sure to increase your chances of creating a winning book title.
This is not an exact science, but here are a few tips that I’ve picked up along the way. And to clarify, these are tips primarily for non-fiction books. Although I’m sure most of these principles can be applied to fiction books as well.
a. State Promise in Main Title
Try to make it clear right away what the reader is going to get from the book. For example, Dave Ramsey’s best selling book is called, Total Money Makeover. The promise is clear. Read this book and get a total money makeover.
However, the sub-title’s of these books really close the saleas we’ll see in a second.
