Understand How The Flow Works

Amazon Seller Tutorial: How to manage merchant and FBA inventory

The Amazon Inventory Adjustments to NetSuite Inventory Adjustments add-on flow allows you to manage, maintain, and track your available inventory levels in NetSuite. It also categorizes sellable vs damaged inventory based on the disposition given by Amazon. The flow automatically syncs Amazon adjustment data to NetSuite.

The flow imports the inventory adjustment to NetSuite as per the scheduled time. In Amazon, a real-time FBA Inventory Adjustment report is generated no more than once every 30 minutes. Before you send another request, there should be a 30-minute time lag for Amazon to generate the updated version of the report.

The Importance Of Inventory Management For Fba Sellers

Maintaining your inventory on Amazon is vital to the success of your store. In addition to the obvious problem of not making any money if you dont have any product to sell, having listings without stock causes a ripple effect on the efficiency and success of your storefront. Most importantly, going out of stock earns you a big ranking algorithm penalty, so even when you get back in stock, your all important sales velocity will be only a fraction of what it was before. These issues can take significant time and energy to recover from, time that would be better spent growing your business.

Amazons Facilities Play A Vital Role In Its System

As mentioned above, Amazon manages a lot of land and much of this land consists of warehouse space. Since Amazon is Amazon, it doesnt approach warehouse management in a monolithic manner. Its created a thoughtful warehouse ecosystem to add structure to the Amazon system.

In fact, a better way to think of this ecosystem is as a distribution network.

The Amazon system divides its distribution network into 5 types of facilities:

The two facility types that are most critical to the Amazon inventory management are the fulfillment centers and the sortation centers.

Track Your Products In The Warehouse

If youve got a warehouse and are finding it hard to keep track of your products, you dont need to worry anymore. An inventory management system can track inventory down to your pick locations, making the process easier for you.

When you receive a purchase order, pick units, and ship the products, it is immediately reflected in your inventory and reflected on your channels. As a result, youre left with many more satisfied customers.

On this next page, you can rename your shipment or just keep it at its default name this is completely up to you.

Your shipment should be created and you should be ready to print your shipping label!

You will now be given the choice to ship your products through UPS or FedEx.

I personally always use UPS, but this is totally up to you.

Under the Shipment packing section, select Everything in one box in the drop-down box located under the text How will this shipment be packed?.

Next, youll need to input the shipment boxs weight along with the dimensions.

If you havent already, fill your shipment box with your products and weigh your products using either a shipping scale or a regular scale.

In my experience, this doesnt have to be 100% accurate as long as its close to the weight range.

As for the shipping boxs dimensions, you should see the dimensions on the box itself.

In my case, I always buy my shipping boxes from Walmart and you can always see the box dimensions on the bottom right-hand corner.

Once youve entered all of this information, click Confirm and youll be able to move on to the next section.

Under Shipping charges, click the Calculate button to get the price youll be charged for shipping these products.

Since were not shipping very many products, the shipping price will likely be low.

You will be charged to your Seller account and have 24 hours to void the transaction if you decide not to ship the products for whatever reason.

    Plan For The Unexpected

Not everything runs smoothly all the time. You may have delays with your supplier, shipping delays, customs delays, FBA warehouse delays, and other issues. The COVID pandemic was a perfect example of this: disrupted manufacturing and supply chains resulted in 53% of U.S. consumers experiencing difficulty finding products online beginning in March 2020.

If you can, order backup units just in case something happens along your supply chain.

This can include storing extra units in your own warehouse or even using a third-party storage/fulfillment center. In the event of a delay, you can maintain stock in FBA without worry, or even fulfill orders using FBM.

This is only recommended if you can accurately predict the demand for your product and have the ability to order and store additional units. Do not order extra if you are short on capital or storage space.

    Lost Sales & Competitive Advantage

One of the biggest problems with running out of inventory is that Amazons search engine optimization penalizes your listing for not generating sales. The listing goes from active to inactive, and you wont be able to make any sales during this period. If no sales are converting on your listing, it begins to lose its search ranking which can be difficult to recover.

It also means therell be no preorders. If youre out of stock, customers cant put in an order and wait for you to replenish your items. Instead, theyll purchase from a competitor.

To make sure all your items remain active and that you keep your customers happy, you need to stay on top of your inventory forecasting and reordering.

How The Amazon Fulfillment Centers Manage Amazon Inventory

7 Ways to Improve Your Amazon Inventory Management

Warehouses operate on an extreme version of that kindergarten lesson: Everything in its place and a place for everything. The standard stock management wisdom is to divide your warehouse and its shelves into sections and put away items accordingly.

For 99% of businesses, this is the way to go. If you simply placed SKUs onto the first shelf you came across, youd be hard pressed to find that item again when a customer orders it.

Amazon falls into the other 1% of businesses. It would be safe to assume that Amazon is not running its trillion-dollar business using spreadsheets or off-the-shelfinventory management system. Rather, it uses a highly sophisticated warehouse management system to keep its processes running smoothly. This sophisticated system allows the company to embrace the chaos inherent in running a small countrys worth of space.

You might be surprised to learn that Amazon fulfillment centers are not sectioned off in any discernible way. There isnt a consumer electronics section or a kitchen appliances section. When a shipment of batteries comes in, an associate doesnt find the batteries section on a warehouse map and then walk over to that section. Instead, when goods come into a fulfillment center, associates place them wherever theres space.

And its one of the main reasons Amazon delivers goods to its customers so quickly.

How Does Sellerlegend Calculate Your Inventory

An important concept that SellerLegend uses for inventory management and forecasting, is called velocity. Velocity tells you how many units are sold per day, on average, over a selected time period. With 15 units sold in 30 days, the velocity will come out to 0.5. That is, 0.5 products were sold per day in 30 days.

For Recommended Reorder Date, SellerLegend takes into account Days of Inventory, Restock Lead Time, and Safety Days. Days of Inventory tells you how many days the current inventory will last at the sales velocity as is selected by the user. Restock Lead Time is the number of days it takes for a shipment to reach the fulfillment center and is set by the user. Safety Days are also set by the user, as any additional number of days that may be required for the stock to arrive.

For Reorder Quantity, SellerLegend uses a number set by the user called Days of Cover. Days of Cover is the number of days that you want the product to be in stock for. Multiplying it with the sales velocity gives us the number of units to order so they last that many days.
