Ethethical Amazon Alternatives: Alexa/ring
Smart tech is almost always surveillance tech, and Alexa is no different. Theres a lack of transparency surrounding the service, while the device itself never stops listening to you. Amazon even employs people to sift through recordings, to improve the service, as reported by Time:
Occasionally the listeners pick up things Echo owners likely would rather stay private: a woman singing badly off key in the shower, say, or a child screaming for help. The teams use internal chat rooms to share files when they need help parsing a muddled wordor come across an amusing recording.
You shouldnt need to be told why having a recording device in your house that is designed to always be on is bad for privacy.
In a similar vein, Ring security devices have a strong relationship with law enforcement, while the company was subject to a 2020 class action lawsuit by more than 30 people in 15 families who say their devices were hacked and used to harass them.
Once again, its a home recording device, but this time with a camera attached.
If you do plan to use Alexa/Ring, make sure to change your passwords regularly, use a password manager, and enable two-factor authentication at the very least.
Its still relatively early days for voice assistant technology, but there are a couple of alternative options being developed to rival Alexa in the long term:

When a company’s workers are literally dying on the job, when their business model relies on preying on local businesses and even their own vendors, when their CEO is literally the richest person in the world while their workers make low wages with impossible quotas… wouldn’t you want to resist? Danny Caine, owner of Raven Book Store in Lawrence, Kansas has been an outspoken critic of the seemingly unstoppable Goliath of the bookselling world: Amazon. In this book, he lays out the case for shifting our personal money and civic investment away from global corporate behemoths and to small, local, independent businesses. Well-researched and lively, his tale covers the history of big box stores, the big political drama of delivery, and the perils of warehouse work. He shows how Amazon’s ruthless discount strategies mean authors, publishers, and even Amazon themselves can lose money on every book sold. And he spells out a clear path to resistance, in a world where consumers are struggling to get by. In-depth research is interspersed with charming personal anecdotes from bookstore life, making this a readable, fascinating, essential book for the 2020s.

Ethical Amazon Alternatives: Buying Books
Originally an online bookseller, Amazon now also offers a large selection of titles for free via Prime. Of course, low fees tend to mean less money for authors and publishers.
Here are some ethical alternatives for purchasing books, either online or in person:
Book Cities is a non-profit project created to promote independent bookshops.
Available for iOS, its smartphone app helps you discover and search new bookstores. It displays the nearest stores wherever you go , and gives opening hours, addresses, contact details, and store descriptions.
World of Books is a leading, UK-based online seller of used books, with millions of global customers. It distributes directly, and through third-party platforms and wholesale partners. The business supports charities and is a pioneer in the reuse and recycling of unwanted books. It plans to be carbon neutral by 2022, and you can find out more about its ethical credentials by checking out its Impact Story.
Ethical Book Search
A user contacted us via the comments to share the Ethical Book Search service they have built.

When Whole Communities Are Inspired To Commit To Local Business Advocacy They Have The Power To Bring Political Pressure To Bear Existing Legislation Is Waiting To Be Implemented Against Amazon And Other Monopolies
Statistics dont just indicate that Americans long to shop locally, but that they are also becoming fed up with monopolies dealing in bad customer service as a for-profit business model. Amazon is continuously lauded for its frictionless customer service innovations, but if your local business commits to strong storytelling, you have a different tale to promote. Its definitely not good customer service when:

If you know anything about the Raven bookstore in Lawrence, Kansas, then you know that it charges more for books than Amazon. Advertising higher prices is an unlikely strategy for any business, but Danny Caine, the Ravens owner, has an M.F.A., not an M.B.A., and he talks openly with customers about why his books cost as much as they do. Two years ago, he took that conversation to social media, using the stores Twitter account to explain why the Raven was charging twenty-six ninety-nine for a hardcover book that a customer had seen online for fifteen dollars. When we order direct from publishers, we get a wholesale discount of 46% off the cover price, Caine wrote. Our cost for that book from the publishers would be $14.57. If we sold it for $15, wed make . . . 43 cents. Caine estimated that, with an inventory of some ten thousand books in the store, on a profit of less than fifty cents a book, the Raven could afford to stay open for about six days.

Ethical Amazon Alternatives: Prime
Prime is an attractive proposition for many shoppers, especially as Amazon will deliver many items within just a day or two. However, this puts a strain on local businesses and independent websites, which cant match Amazons loss-leading tactics.
Shopping with Prime isnt necessarily as cheap as you may have expected. Often, similar items are available in local stores for a similar price, and youll be helping the local economy, rather than a megacorp who pays next to no tax.
The point is, Amazon is relying on the fact that many users will stick with the service, even if its not the most ethical option.
Launched in June 2019, Veo aims to become the earth-friendly Amazon. It says:

How did a libertine who lacks even the most basic knowledge of the Christian faith win 81 percent of the white evangelical vote in 2016? And why have white evangelicals become a presidential reprobate’s staunchest supporters? Jesus and John Wayne is a sweeping account of the last 75 years of white evangelicalism, showing how American evangelicals have worked for decades to replace the Jesus of the Gospels with an idol of rugged masculinity and Christian nationalism.

Dream Of A Level Playing Field
A world where Amazon plays by the rules is possible. A world where small businesses are robust, creative, and everywhere is possible. A world where large technology companies can be trusted with our data is possible. A world where one company no longer has a chokehold on the entire publishing industry is possible. A world where billionaires and their incredibly profitable companies pay their fair share of taxes is possible. Hell, a world without billionaires is possible. An Amazon-controlled future is not a given. Many things need to happen to create this future. Government action is necessary, but do not underestimate the power of collective individual action too.

Cancel Your Prime Subscription Or Even Better Your Amazon Account
Amazon Prime makes it easier for you to give money and data to Amazon. The free 1-day shipping is a tremendous incentive for people to click the purchase button. Its so tremendous that Amazon almost certainly loses money on many of these transactions. But what it loses in shipping costs it gains in data: Prime members not only share their purchasing, browsing, listening, and streaming data with the worlds most valuable company, but they also pay to do it.
Even without a Prime account, Amazon can still mine your data, as long as you have an account that you use to make purchases. No account means no products and, more importantly, no data. Amazon doesnt want you to exist outside of their data-sucking system, so theyve made deleting your account a multiple-hoops-to-jump-through process. Reaching an actual human is necessary, and reaching a human at Amazon is notoriously difficult.
To cancel your Amazon account, call 280-4331 or use Amazon online chat. Theyll probably try to make you rethink your decision. They probably wont make it easy. But remember, when they say their focus is customer obsession, its not obsession over your well-being, its obsession over how to use your data to increase their profits.
You Dont Have To Plug Your House Into Amazons Privacy
Ive made the case that what Amazon wants most from you is your data. You are not their customer you are their product. Much of this data comes from tracking browsing and purchasing habits of shoppers, which you can avoid by resisting shopping on Amazon. But even more of this data comes from people who voluntarily pay to place data-collecting devices inside their homes. They do this by purchasing Alexa-enabled devices and Ring security doorbells. One of the most important ways we can resist Amazon is by keeping them out of our homes.
