The 7 Essential Elements Of Your Book To Get More Sales

Sell More Books On Amazon: Your Guide to Consistent Book Sales on Amazon

Thirty seconds. As an author thats about all the time you have when talking to someone to generate interest in your book.

Sarah Bolme

You may be thinking right now: Wait, where are the promotion strategies? How can I sell thousands of books a month? We will get to that. However, before you begin to think about selling a truckload of books, you must first engineer it from the ground up to prepare for future sales. You must make your book appealing enough to the reader to catch their interest.

When it comes to selling a book, you have a short window to convince someone that your book is the best investment they are about to make. You can do this right away by sticking with the 7 essentials were about to show you.

Bestseller Lists And Categories

Amazon has over 19,669 bestseller lists and categories just for eBooks in the United States, and theyre adding hundreds of new ones each month. With so many bestseller lists to choose from, it can be overwhelming for authors and publishers to find let alone select the right categories in which to list their titles on Amazon.

To make matters even more complicated, Amazons categories featured on their website are determined by BISAC Subject Codes, an industry standard system for categorizing books.

However, when you upload your book inside your Kindle Direct Publishing dashboard in order to publish it on Amazon Kindle, you must select your books bestseller categories using Amazons internal category labels which often conflict with the BISAC categories. The results of this can range from a little confusion to finding that your book is listed in a category on the website completely different from what you thought you had selected.

Amazon only allows you to select two individual bestseller lists when you publish your book on Kindle using KDP , but your book can be featured in up to 20 categories or more on Amazon. These extra categories come from a few special promotional categories Amazon has, as well as the fact that some categories are nested under various parent categories.

For example, if you list your book in the Regency Romance category on Amazon, heres how it will appear on your book page:

Kindle Store > Kindle eBooks > Romance > Historical Romance > Regency

Wait 90 Days Rinse Repeat

Figuring out how to market your book once is great, but the job of marketing never stops. Make sure your sales stay healthy by running stacked promotions once every 90 or so days. Bumping your book up in the charts every few months will get them in front of new readers, and help you gain a devoted following. You can focus on content marketing for your books in the downtime between your promotion days to keep sales at a consistent level.

Research Your Categories And Keywords

Both categories and your keywords are important inputs to the algorithm and serve to help new readers discover your book when they are browsing Amazon. You set both your categories and your keywords in your Kindle Direct Publishing account.

Lets start with categories. On Amazon your categories are basically your genres, and you can only pick two for each book. When picking a category, be sure to pick the ones that most closely align with the content of your book. In Amazons own words:

A browse category is the section of the Amazon site where users can find your book. Think of the browse category like the sections of a physical bookstore . You can select up to two browse categories for your book. Precise browse categorization helps readers find your book, so be sure to select the most appropriate categories for your book.

Next up: keywords. Optimizing your keywords is a fancy term for picking words you think people are going to search for. Imagine you are a reader, and you go to Amazon to find a book, what will you type in the search box? Get inside the mind of the reader and think about what words to add that will make your book easy to find. You will want to do two sets of research for keywords for your title.

To do this research, you can use the free functionality of KWFinder, or, if youre running AdWords, Googles keyword planner.

Amazon also has a useful resource on how to set keywords for your title, and they recommend focusing on five types of terms:

How To Make Money By Publishing And Selling Short Stories And Short Books On Amazon

There is a demand for publishing short stories, but the money is in ebooks.

Specifically, Amazons short reads section, which is broken down by reading time for books less than 100 pages.

This week I got to peak at a report from, who analysed more than 14,000 books to assess the commercial attractiveness of 144 Kindle Short Read categories. The report also found that customers prefer longer books, so books in the short reads categories that are 2 hours or more sell the best.

Overall, the same categories are popular in short reads as in the regular Kindle store, however, the effective Price per Page is 3.6 times higher for Short Reads.

The Kdp Select Experiment: Results

After the first hour of free promotion, I checked how many copies had been downloaded.

50 copies in an hour!

I almost fell off my chair. Yes, they were free downloads , but I was ecstatic because it meant:

  • My book now had the chance of helping 50 new people learn a foreign language
  • At least a few people were interested in what I had to say.
  • 2 hours down, 80 downloads. While I slept at night, it was downloaded over 200 times.

At the end of the 24 hour period, my book had been downloaded 400+ times a lot more than Id sold during six weeks of being in the Kindle store.

After the freebie period was over, people continued downloading the book. Not at the same rate of 20-50 sales per hour, but in the following week I had a 600% increase in sales.

To be clear, were not talking Stieg Larsson numbers here, but for me as a first time author and newbie to Amazon, this was a breakthrough, and made me grin like a little kid.

Heres what my sales figures have looked like:

    • : 25 sales
    • : 30 sales . Sales have continued to trickle in since then at a much faster pace than before.
    • Total downloads in the month of Feb: 513

Use A Special Sku Prefix For Textbooks

Textbooks are special in that they spike in price during so-called textbook seasons, which is what the book-selling community calls the period of time before college semesters start when students buy their textbooks. To maximize your profit, youll want to hold on to your textbooks until the next textbook season comes around.

This can be a challenge if you use an automated repricing tool to keep your prices competitive. The repricer will , including your textbooks unless you tell it not to.

This is where adding a special SKU prefix comes in handy. If your repricer is good, you can tell it not to reprice books with SKUs that start with a certain set of characters.

For example, I put TX at the beginning of my textbook SKUs, and I configure my repricer not to touch books with SKUs that start with TX. This way, I dont accidentally sell my textbooks before the textbook season price spike comes along, and I make more money overall.

    Setup Your Amazon Ebook Metadata

Metadata is just a fancy phrase for data about your book. Amazon allows you to set the metadata when you setup your book through the KDP interface, so youll want to think about it before publishing. The easiest way to optimize your metadata is to make sure your book description is at least 100 words, and uses genre specific terms that people will be searching for. If you struggle with what to write, try using the ifthen construct: if you like suspenseful thrillers, then youll love this book or if you liked Gone Girl, then youll love this book.

    Accelerate Sales With Ams Ads

If youre looking to skyrocket your sales, AMS ads could be the way to go. But as with every other type of advertising, AMS can be tricky.

The main objective of AMS ads is to get your books seen at the most opportune times. To do that, you once again need to think about keywords.

However, AMS Keywords are a whole new breed of keyword. Rather than focusing only on the content of your book, they often try to pull in new readers by targeting competing book titles, the names of famous authors in your genre, and other unexpected phrases. You wouldnt rank highly for these organically, but you can appear in one of the sponsored spots.

When it comes to choosing AMS keywords vs Kindle keywords, AMS keywords are by far the more elaborate and difficult to target. A properly run ad campaign can actually require days of market research, just to find the right words to use. But there is an easier way to do all of this

    A Killer Book Description

Amazon allows authors to include a lengthy book description on the author page, dont ignore this. While your book cover, title, and reviews are enough to make the sale, a solid looking book description adds that heft factor to the quality of your product.

Your book description will be a sales page that lists the benefits of the book. It should have a mixture of various font style and structure to create a clean, attractive description of your book. We recommend using the free at This saves time in messing around with nasty HTML coding.
