Install The Google Play Store

HOW TO SET UP YOUR AMAZON FIRE TABLET | AMAZON FIRE 7, KIDS EDITION.

RELATED:

By default, the Fire Tablet line ships with the Amazon Appstore. The Appstore isnt necessarily bad, but its definitely a few steps behind the Google Play Store in terms of content and updates. But since Fire OS is based off of Android, you can easily sideload the Google Play Store for full access to everything Google has to offer.

The process doesnt require a rooted device and is fairly straightforwardits little more than a few app downloadsso hit up this guide and get to work. Youll be glad you did it.

How To Enable Alexa On Your Fire Tablet

To enable Alexa on your Fire tablet:

  • From your Home screen, swipe right until you get to the Apps page and then search for “Alexa.”

  • After it automatically installs, tap Amazon Alexa on your Home screen to launch it.

  • Enter your name and tap Continue.

  • Set up phone verification by entering your phone number and confirming the code sent to you.

Alternatively, you can tap SKIP and set up phone verification later just tap the speech bubble at the bottom of the Alexa app home screen.

  • After a brief tutorial, you can start making the most of Amazon’s voice assistant.

  • Use Alexa To Read Your Kindle Books

If you have Audible audiobooks, you can listen to them by saying, “Alexa, play the audiobook” followed by the title.

Alexa can also read your books aloud if you don’t have an Audible account. To have Alexa read to you in her digitized voice, just say, “Alexa, play the Kindle book” followed by the title.

You can then ask Alexa to pause, resume, or stop your Kindle book. Examples of other commands you can use include:

    • “Alexa, read louder.”
    • “Alexa, stop reading in 30 minutes.”
    • “Alexa, next chapter.”

Amazon Fire 7 Review: Alexa Support

The Alexa support is the big new feature with this model but, just to be clear, its nothing new when it comes to Amazons Fire tablets. With the previous update to the Fire 7, Amazon was also boasting about its Alexa functions and the Fire HD 8 and Fire HD 10 both have Alexa baked in as well.

So what on Earth is Amazon going on about here? The difference is in how the 2019 model supports Amazons digital butler: Alexa is now completely hands-free, which means you no longer have to hold down a button on the screen to talk to your smart assistant. This tablet is, effectively, a slimline smart speaker.

As with Amazons 8in and 10in Fire HD tablets, its a function that works rather well. You get added visuals with certain requests and tips that help users learn how to use Alexa. Its a great introduction to the technology.

Dont expect it to perform exactly like a full-blown Echo speaker, however. The microphones arent as sensitive, for a start. Step away from the tablet a bit too far, add a bit of background noise into the equation and your pleas for Alexas attention will fall on deaf ears.

Aside from this, Alexa on the Fire 7 is just as fully featured as it is on the Echo speakers, with no restrictions on features such as calling, messaging or drop-in. And one bonus is that, when the tablet is used in the same room as another Echo speaker with the same wake word , only one device will respond.
