HOW TO SET UP YOUR AMAZON FIRE TABLET | AMAZON FIRE 7, KIDS EDITION.

You can install the FreeTime app on any Amazon tablet, or any Android or iOS device. But, the options may be more limited than they are on your kids Fire Kids Edition tablet. For example, I installed the iOS app and signed into my Amazon account, but I wasnt able to remove FreeTime content through the iOS app I had to use the FreeTime app on the Fire Kids Edition tablet to do that.

The security of your Amazon Fire Kids Edition tablet largely depends on the security of your Amazon account. Be sure to learn from my .

If your Fire tablet doesnt need to communicate with other devices on your home network, connect it to your guest network instead. That will ensure that traffic to and from the tablet goes directly through your router to the Internet, and doesnt reach other devices on your network. That way, if your child does anything dangerous with the tablet, it wont affect other devices on your network. Likewise, if someone else in your family does something dangerous with another device, it wont affect the Fire tablet. You may need to enable the guest network feature in your router, and not all routers have it.

Amazon FreeTime automatically renews and charges you. If you dont want this to happen, go to your subscription and toggle Auto-renew to off.

Amazon Fire Kids Tablet: What Is It

An Amazon Fire Kids tablet takes the company’s already great hardware at its core, like an and make it perfect for kids and parents by adding software specifically designed for children. This software feature is called , making these tablets not only easier to navigate for kids but also filling it with age-appropriate content that puts you in control of what your child sees. That’s a very basic explanation of what you get when you purchase an Amazon Fire Kids tablet, so let’s get into the details in the different layers of what makes these tablets such a great buy for kids and parents alike.

How To Customize Freetime Profiles

Were going to start with the most important tools found in FreeTime: Daily Goals & Time Limits. Go ahead and tap the Set Daily Goals & Time Limits option, then hit the toggle to enable these features.

Alright! Here you have a few options. Youll start with setting the childs bedtime, which will basically disable use of the tablet after that time. You can also set specific educational-based goals with set amounts of required times for educations books, videos, and apps. If little Eduardo is going to spend all damn day on his tablet, he might as well learn something, right?

Theres also an option to set the total amount of screen time allowed, which may or may not be something youre into. You can set it from one to six hours, but theres also an unlimited option. If youre not into just blanket-allowing screen time, theres also an option to allow specific time by activity. That way you can let them read as many books as they want, but only watch videos or play games for a limited time. I love how granular that is.

Once youre finished setting up times, just press the back button.

There are a few other tweaks you can make here, like add/remove content options where youll add or remove new books, apps, and videos a web browser toggle and Smart Filters, which basically help create a curated experience for FreeTime Unlimited profiles.

Is Google Play Available For Amazon Fire Tablet

Because the Amazon Fire tablet runs on Amazons custom FireOS and Amazon, like Apple, likes to keep its users inside its walled garden, there is no support for Google Play on the Amazon Fire tablet. Instead, you have to use Amazons App Store. But dont worry, nearly all of the most popular apps are present and accounted for inside the Amazon Apps Store. Is it better than Google Play? Hell no! But it is good enough, so dont stress it too much.

You cannot download any of Googles core applications, however, and, sadly, that includes YouTube, Chrome, and Gmail. Why? Google hasnt released them inside the , likely as a punishment to Amazon for not using the Google Play Store on its tablet devices. If you want to watch YouTube, you have to do it through the built-in browser.

Install Apps To The Sd Card

Amazon Fire Kids Edition Parental Controls Guide ...

Theres one other toggle labeled Install Supported Apps on your SD card. Once enabled, any apps that you attempt to install in the future that can be loaded onto the SD card will be.

Theres also a Move Apps to SD Card option that will move any pre-installed apps that are compatible with running from an SD card. Note that it can take a long time for that process to complete, so be patient.

While moving apps to your SD card is a one-click, long-wait process, I noticed theres no quick and easy way to move all apps from your SD card back to built-in storage. But you can do it one-by-one.

Just tap the SD Card Storage option in your Storage settings, choose Apps & Games on the following screen, and then youll see a list of SD Card Compatible apps that are installed on the card. Tap any of those apps to bring up a detail screen that includes an option to Move to Tablet.

Keep in mind that while this will free up space on your device, you could run into a few issues:

  • If you remove the SD card for any reason, you wont be able to run apps that are installed on the card.
  • You might not save as much data as you expect, since some portions of some apps will remain on the tablets internal storage.
  • Read and write speeds for most SD cards probably arent as fast as for the tablets built-in storage, so depending on your card, your tablet may perform some tasks more slowly.
  • If your SD card fails, it will take your apps with it.

Poke this and youll see a list of all registered users just tap the one you wish to switch to. Note that your kids wont be able to swap back to your profile on the sly, because theyll be prompted to enter your PIN.

Amazon Fire Kids Tablet: Features

With a two-year worry-free warranty, should your child’s tablet need to be replaced Amazon will send you a new one for free so long as it is in the two-year warranty period.

While the case and warranty are great, what really makes these devices so wonderful is the Amazon Kids and Kids+ software. When you set up your child’s tablet, you will enter their age and choose an age range of content you want to be accessible by your child. Then, displayed in a colorful, easy-to-use setup, your child will be able to explore an appropriate library of content safely.

From the parent’s side, you will be able to go in at any time and make adjustments to your child’s content setting. Part of the parental control feature is the ability to set screentime limits, educational goals and to be able to see what content your child spends their time on.

If you want to require your child reads for 30 minutes before the entertainment content is unlocked, you can. From the parent dashboard, you have complete control over your child’s device even the ability to pause it.

Install The Play Store

Amazon Fire Tablet Kids Edition: Unboxing & Setup

With all the downloaded APK files to your Amazon Fire Tablet, we can begin installing them one by one. Open the Files app from the home screen.

Select Downloads from the side menu and switch to the list view for the files. You should see the four files we just downloaded.

Its important to install these APKs in a specific order. For each APK, follow this process: Tap the file > select Continue> tap the Install button. After it installs, tap Done.Dont open the Play Store yet.

Install the files in this order :

  • com.google.android.gsf.login
  • com.google.android.gms
  • com.android.vending
  • With all the APKs installed, its time to reboot the tablet. Hold down the power button and select Restart.

After the tablet restarts, youll see the Play Store on the home screen. Open it and sign in with your Google account.

Once youre signed in, youll have a functional Google Play Store, just like on any other Android device. Go forth and download YouTube, Gmail, and any other app you cant find in the Amazon Appstore.

You may experience some problems when trying to use the Play Store right away. The Play Store and Google Play Services will automatically update themselves in the background, so just give it some time. This may take as much as ten minutes.

    Managing Your Childs Profile

There are many options in each child profile to give you fine control over precisely what they can and cant do. Lets run through the main things quickly:

Go to Settings > Profiles & Family Library and choose the child profile you want to manage.

Tap Set Daily Goals & Time Limits, and youll find that you can prevent your child from being able to use the tablet during the night, set Total Screen Time limits, or break down your restrictions by content type. For example, some parents might be happy to allow unlimited reading but want to restrict apps and games to half an hour per day. When the time limit is reached, a message pops up on the screen to tell your child that theyve reached the limit for the day. You can also set different schedules and limits for the weekend than for weekdays. You can even set Educational Goals, stipulating, for example, that your child must read a book for half an hour before they can access entertainment content.

If you want to add or remove access to any specific content, you can do so under Manage Your Childs Content. To download a new app or game for them, youll need to log into your profile, download and install the app, and then go to Settings > Profiles & Family Library, choose their profile, then tap Add Content > Add Books, Videos, And Apps, tap the app or game you want to add, and then tap Done. You can override the age-appropriate suggestions and grant access to whatever content you want in here.

Setting Up Sd Cards With Fire Os 73

Open the door covering the microSD card reader and insert a card.

If this is your first time using this SD card with your tablet, you may see a notification that says Unsupported Storage. If you do, you can tap that notification to open a menu that offers two options:

  • Use for extra tablet storage
  • Use for portable storage
  • The first option allows you to install apps to the microSD card, freeing up space in your Fire tablets built-in storage. You can also use the SD card to store media and other files, but if you remove the card youll lose access to any apps installed to it. So only choose this option if you dont plan to remove or swap storage cards frequently.

If you choose the second option, you can use the SD card to store music, movies, and other files, but not apps. This is the better option if you plan to use an SD card to transfer files, movies, or other content between devices.

Once youve made your choice, tap the option and Fire OS will ask if you want to format this storage device.

Note that any data thats already on your SD card will be erased, so make sure to back up any important files and then go ahead and format your storage device.

Adding Apps And Content To Amazon Kids

One of the things you’ll need to do in the regular Amazon Kids app is nominate the content that your children will have access to. This gives you complete vetting, as you’ll be responsible for allowing access to various apps and games – unless using Amazon Kids+, which we’ll get to in a second.

It’s easy enough to add content, but you have to follow these steps:

  • In the adult profile, head to Amazon Apps and find the app or game you want, download and install it.
  • Open the Amazon Kids app, and open the profile of the child you want to grant access to.
  • Tap “Add Content” and you’ll get the option to share content on your tablet, add websites or add videos from the web.
  • Select the content you want to add. If it’s content you have, you’ll get to pick apps, books, Audible if it’s websites you get to add the URL videos takes you to YouTube so you can select videos to allow access.
  • Sign back into the child’s profile to access the app or content.
  • This arrangement gives you plenty of freedom to add things you want your child to have access to. While Amazon Kids has some access to content included, divided into themes or characters, you’ll likely have some content you want your child to have, especially as they get older. Allowing access to apps and games is within your control, so you can make a decision about what your child has access to – beyond the protections that Amazon provide. There’s no access to in-app purchases, however.
