What I Love Most About The Amazon Smart Plug
This smart plug really is amazing, I can walk out of my bedroom, tell Alexa good morning and not only do I get my weather report, but my living room light turns on. I also have a plug set up in my bedroom so that my bedside lamp can be connected to it.
The cord is stuck behind my nightstand and its hard to reach. Its so nice being able to just turn it on and off with my phone. I could ask my echo dot, but it cant always hear me from my room.
The plug itself is not huge and you can fit two in an outlet or you have room for something else to the plugin if you just use one smart plug.

Whether you’re using iOS or Android, the directions for pairing a smart plug with the Alexa app remain mostly the same. Tap on the menu button in the upper left-hand corner, then select the first option to “Add Device.” On the next screen, the app will ask about the type of device you’re setting up. Scroll down several line items, and then tap on the “Plug” option.
Open the Alexa app on your iOS or Android device to get started.
The next screen will ask you to choose your brand. To enable a Skill, head back to the menu screen in the Alexa app, and select Skills & Games further down the list. You can then search for your device by the manufacturer.
Once youve finished pairing a device, the Alexa app will ask you to add it to a groupor a “room,” as you might otherwise consider it, which is extremely helpful if you’re planning to pair a mountain of smart plugs in addition to it.
Once your smart plugs are set up, controlling them from the Alexa app is a breeze.

Recapping How Smart Plugs Work
Smart plugs work by plugging them into your wall socket, and then you plug an electrical device into this .
You can then use the smart plugs phone app or a smart speaker to turn the smart plug on and off, thereby turning the electrical device on and off.
There are many uses of this, including turning the internet router off at meal times or turning a slower cooker in whilst youre at work, so youll have the perfect meal waiting for you when you arrive home.
You can also set automatic timers, so that the smart plug will turn on and off based on the time of day that you have configured. In this way they replace the old style mechanical timers.
Another nice benefit of smart plugs is that you can use them as part of automation routines with other parts of your smart home. For example, you can connect your smart plug with an Echo and then have a routine that says when someone says dinner time:
- Announce dinner time on all Echo devices in the house.
- Turn off the internet router .
- Flash the landing and hallway lights on/off .

Avoid Potential Errors During Setup
Setting up most Alexa-compatible and Amazon-branded smart devices is a simple process. However, errors do happen. There are steps you can take to ensure a smooth setup.
First, make sure you keep your phone within 30 feet of your smart plug during setup. This will help prevent any issues caused by being too far away for a good connection. Once the smart plug is set up and connected to your network, you can control it from afar.
Turn off low-power or power-saving mode on your phone during the setup process. If you need to charge your mobile device for a few minutes before beginning setup, do so.
If you are using the barcode to setup the device, try using the one from the quick start guide rather than the barcode on the back of the Amazon Smart Plug. This ensures you dont need to unplug the device to scan the code.

An Overcrowded Wifi Network
This is a problem that gets a little technical and more than a little interesting. If you are facing an overcrowded WiFi network, you might have essentially done a WiFi jamming hack on yourself by accident.
WiFi jammers are illegal to own and operate in the US, but there are no laws against trying to connect too many smart devices to your homes WiFi at one time! While these are two very different things, in a sense, both of these are doing the same thing to your WiFi.
A WiFi jammer works by flooding a WiFi network with noise. This makes it nearly impossible for any regular device to connect to the network. Think about this like trying to have a quiet conversation in the middle of a rock concert.
Having too many smart devices all clambering to get on the same network creates the same problem. If your WiFi network is struggling to accommodate all of your smart devices, it might be time to investigate other smart home communications technology like Z-Wave and Zigbee.
The way this will work is that youll have a separate device known as a Hub in your home somewhere, and it looks a bit like a small internet router:
This speaks something called ZigBee, just like your internet router speaks WiFi. You can then purchase ZigBee compatible smart devices such as the Philips Hues lights, and these then speak to your ZigBee Hub.
A problem shared is a problem halved applies to smart devices just as much as it applies to life in general!

Getting A Scheduled Routine Set Up
Setting up a Routine for your Smart Plug is a slightly involved process, but easy enough once you get the hang of it. Heres what you do:
Assuming that you set this Routine up to switch the Smart Plug on, youll need to create a separate routine following the same steps telling the Plug what time you want it to turn off again . Unless, of course, you dont want that to happen automatically, in which case you just have to tell Alexa to do it as normal.
