A Conversation About Rain

Nineteen years before she decided to die, Nora Seed sat in the warmth of the small library at Hazeldene School in the town of Bedford. She sat at a low table staring at a chess board.

Nora dear, its natural to worry about your future, said the librarian, Mrs Elm, her eyes twinkling.

Mrs Elm made her first move. A knight hopping over the neat row of white pawns. Of course, youre going to be worried about the exams. But you could be anything you want to be, Nora. Think of all that possibility. Its exciting.

Yes. I suppose it is.

A whole life in front of you.

A whole life.

You could do anything, live anywhere. Somewhere a bit less cold and wet.

Nora pushed a pawn forward two spaces.

It was hard not to compare Mrs Elm to her mother, who treated Nora like a mistake in need of correction. For instance, when she was a baby her mother had been so worried Noras left ear stuck out more than her right that shed used sticky tape to address the situation, then disguised it beneath a woollen bonnet.

Make Your Fire Tablet The Perfect Echo Show Alternative

Last but certainly not least, Fire HD 8 and Fire HD 10 devices can double as Echo Show alternatives, making them the perfect gadget to throw in the kitchen, living room, or anywhere else around your house. Just grab tablet stand, prop it up on a flat surface, then swipe down from the top of the device to open the quick settings menu. Toggle on Show Mode, and right before your eyes, your Fire Tablet will transform into an Echo Show.

To use Show Mode, you must enable Alexa on your device. It works best when Hands-Free Mode is also turned on otherwise, issuing voice commands is a whole lot harder. You can access Show-specific settings by tapping on the gear icon in the notification panel while this mode is enabled.

If you already have an Echo Show in your house, you’ll feel right at home with this UI. A swipe to the right opens a control panel with quick commands while your home screen rotates between the clock, weather, news, and more. Whether you’re trying to load up a Prime Original or look for cookie recipes to start baking, Show Mode gives you everything you need to use your Fire Tablet hands-free.

Should You Buy The Amazon Fire 7 Tablet

The may sound underwhelming, but you have to remember its exceptionally low price. The tablet is lightweight and versatile, but the frequent lag sours the experience.

Over the years, Amazon has added functionality to the Fire 7 to keep it a relevant, price-efficient option in an evolving field. Through that lens, its pretty easy to see why the Fire 7 lacks some of the processing power of its more expensive competitors. Its cheap, it feels cheap, but it works.

RELATED

My experiences with the Fire 7 Tablet were positive overall. Its a good place to read books or watch videos. As such, its still an excellent device for that, and its an affordable option for some entertainment while traveling. I just dont believe you should be using this for your office.

There still arent many tablets on the market at the Fire 7s price point, and that alone is a powerful trait to have. That value is also improved by having subscriptions to existing Amazon services. The OS is annoying, but its not inoperable.

Ultimately, the Amazon Fire 7 is undoubtedly a step up from the last release, but whether or not its worth the extra money is questionable. If you have a generation-older Fire 7 Tablet, It probably isnt worth upgrading to this model. However, if youre someone who is just looking for a cheap tablet to take on trips and arent at all concerned with the quality, consider picking one up.

Voice-activated assistants are the future of man-machine communication, and Amazon has developed its own system called Alexa.

You can enable Alexa on the Fire tablet easily, and start getting news or weather forecast, set timers, or begin playing audiobooks with just your voice.

Amazon Fire tablets released in 2017 or later are ready for hands-free Alexa. It means you can activate the voice assistant without the need to press the home button.

Can I Use A Tablet As A Smart Home Control

Amazon Fire HD 8 TabletWatch Before You Buy

We’ll need a tablet that can be used as our smart home dashboard in order to get started. As a general rule, you can use any tablet you want. If you want to achieve the best results, the best tablet is likely to have a small, thin body with wireless charging.

Yeti Blog shows you how to turn an old tablet into a home automation tablet controller. Do you have an old tablet or iPad at home that you are no longer using? My situation was similar to that of you, so I decided to make it come back to life. Yeti can run Android, Apple, or Amazon apps on a wide range of tablets. You will be able to use Yeti as a free app, but you will also be able to add premium features after upgrading your Yeti account to a premium one. These features include charms, routines, and alexa. There are numerous options. Never turn Yeti off on your tablet and never turn it off at all.

Because Apple is eliminating support for the iPad as a home hub, Android phones and tablets are now the only devices that can benefit from features such as remote access to accessories and automated services based on location. When Android phones and tablets become home hubs, users will be able to access a wealth of information and control their devices more easily through a single interface. Google has long had this advantage over Apple, and it appears to be a strategy that the company is willing to take on head-on.

The Fire Is Not An Android Tablet

Several companies offer devices with customized operating systems based on Googles Android. Nook does it, Samsung does it, and Amazon also does it.

Custom operating systems are designed to integrate with the platform, put the users profile in the center, and create stronger ways to promote store content.

But Amazon modifies its system Fire OS much deeper than others. From the users point of view, its not Android any longer. The system is Amazon-centric and lacks features that are essential for many Android users.

If you own an Android smartphone and want a tablet that would seamlessly sync your content, the Amazon Fire is not for you.

Amazon Kindle Vs Amazon Fire Tablet Pricing

There are three different types of Amazon Kindle device: the basic version, that’s just called that, then the Kindle Paperwhite which is the mid-range device with more storage, a sharper screen and an IP rating, and the Kindle Oasis, which has a premium metal design, even more storage and a bigger display.

Each of those devices costs a bit more than the model below it, and each gets an updated version every few years. We’ll show you current prices for them below:

Amazon Fire tablets are a bit different, and the main thing to differentiate them is their screen size and resolution. There’s the , Fire HD 8, and Fire HD 10, with the number referring to the screen size and ‘HD’ showing that the device has a high-definition resolution.

There are a few variations too: the Fire HD 8 Plus has wireless charging and a few extra features over the HD 8, and Kids’ Edition tablets come with child-protection features and hardy shells so your kids won’t break them.

As with the Kindles, each sizing version gets an update every few years. Here are the prices for the latest editions:

Fun That Will Wear Out

The Amazon Fire HD 8 has a textured plastic back that feels almost rubberized, which ensures a good grip. Thankfully, it isnt a fingerprint magnet, though it most certainly is a scratch magnet. I used it gently for a week and began to see signs of gashing. The scratches were nearly unnoticeable, but this shouldnt happen to a device that spent most of its time either on my desk or my bed. I never dropped it, nor hit it against anything.

Even if the outer layers of the back cover are delicate, the device itself feels pretty sturdy. The unit might even handle drops well, but dont torture it too much as it has no official rugged certification. The power and volume buttons have a slight wobble, but they offer acceptable feedback and dont feel like they will wear down too easily.

When you get past the small things you will find the Amazon Fire HD 8 to be a minimalist tablet with no fanfare. It touts a lonely Amazon smile logo in the back. The tablet can also be playful, offered in a selection of colors, including black, plum, twilight blue, white, and slate .

The Amazon Fire HD 8 offers a good grip and isn’t a fingerprint magnet. It sure is a scratch magnet, though.

The placement of the camera, buttons, and rear logo makes it seem like the tablet was intended to be used in landscape mode, which is odd considering the UI was mostly designed to be used in portrait mode.

Why You Should Avoid The Amazon Fire 7 Kids Tablet

Infiland Smart Cover for Amazon All

Amazon’s Fire 7 tablet and the child-focused Amazon Fire 7 Kids are popular devices for children. Their low price makes these tablets attractive gifts.

While it might appear to be a competent device that can play games, music, audiobooks, and videos with an eight-hour battery, as time goes on, you’ll find yourself fixing annoying problems with the tablet, checking for solutions online, and regularly turning it off and back on again.

Several years ago, I bought my eldest children a pair of , each equipped with a rubber foam case. The devices cost just $50 each. My kids were, of course, instantly delighted.

It wasnt long before it appeared to be a big mistake. Both tablets had run out of internal storage after a week, and as we had intended for them to serve as in-car entertainment for the children as we headed on holiday, this was not ideal.

While adding microSD cards is an option, it doesnt solve every problem. The low spec of Amazons 7-inch tablets results in repeated restarts, Wi-Fi drops, and regular factory resets.

Kids want more from their tech. So do adults.

Its Great For Kids And Amazon Prime Subscribers

What makes the Fire tablets so popular among parents is the free built-in parental controls. Parents can set a password to restrict app purchasing and allow only age-appropriate content to be shown. They can set up and manage individual profiles for everyone using the tablet, giving kids daily time limits and setting age filters for videos, games and books.

Parents can also subscribe to Kids+, which is a paid Amazon content service with thousands of games, books and apps to keep kids busy on long car trips or flights.

Amazon also sells a $109 Fire 7 Kids edition bundle that comes with a kid-proof carrying case with built-in stand, a year of the Kids+ subscription and a two-year no-worry damage insurance plan. If your kid accidentally drops the tablet and it breaks, Amazon will replace it.

Amazon Prime subscribers and Alexa users will love how well the tablet integrates with those services, which include Prime Video, Kindle, Audible, Amazon Music and Amazon shopping. Theres hands-free support for Alexa you can ask Alexa to play music and videos, open specific apps, check the weather, access and control smart devices in the home and more. You can also save photos and videos to the Amazon cloud, though the 2-megapixel camera is not one youll want to use as your primary camera.

Amazon Fire Review: Not Good But Good For The Price If You’re A Prime Member

The 7-inch Fire bucks the budget tablet status quo. It’s not the best performing device, but thanks to its feature-rich operating system and bargain basement price, it’s an attractive option.

Amazon Fire Hd 8 Review: A Good Cheap Tablet With One Big Compromise

Despite the hype around the latest iPad Pros, theres something to be said for cheap slabs. Theyre great communal devices and living-room mainstays for the entire family to use to watch videos, play mobile games, send emails and browse the Internet. But affordable tablet options have dwindled over the years and while devices like Samsungs Tab S6 Lite are solid, you still have to pay over $300 to get it.

Many simply dont have that much wiggle room in their budgets, and thats where Amazons Fire tablets come in for the save. The new $90 Fire HD 8 and $110 HD 8 Plus continue the pattern weve seen Amazon push in recent years: improve the tablets hardware just enough to warrant a slight price increase, while keeping the cost well below its competitors. Amazon largely succeeded this time around, making better versions of the previous Fire HD 8. However, the company focused its efforts on hardware while leaving software mostly untouched — and the latter continues to hold Fire tablets back.
