Words by Crystal Lugo Illustrations by McKenna Brunn
Nanny Fine was the most eccentric gal on our television screens with outfits, a nasally voice and quips to match. We fell in love with her on The Nanny, an American sitcom starring Fran Drescher, Charles Shaughnessy and Renée Taylor. The Nanny followed Fine, an unemployed Jewish 29-year-old, as she made her way into the Sheffields home as their new nanny, turning their beige lives red.
Viewers tuned in on Fines colorful misadventures with the Sheffield kids and her nail-biting, will-they-won’t-they relationship with Maxwell Sheffield for six seasons, airing on CBS from November 3, 1993 to June 23, 1999.
21 years after its final episode, The Nanny cast reunited for a virtual pilot table read on April 6, 2020, hoping to bring some comedic relief during this trying time.
Its a once in a lifetime Pandemic Performance for our fans around the world who are currently stressing in isolation and could use a real upper! It sure has given each of us a lift and we hope it does for you as well, said Drescher in a statement.
The virtual reading satisfied many nostalgic hearts, including those whod catch reruns on Nick at Nite. However, many were left wondering when The Nanny will be joining streaming services like many other 90s sitcom favorites already have.
Nonetheless, check out the top four reasons why The Nanny needs to be on streaming services today.

The Nanny’s Fran Drescher Teases Series Streaming Announcement
Many of the biggest television shows of years past have made their way onto some sort of streaming platform at this point, including major hits like Friends, The Office, Frasier, Cheers, Family Matters, Golden Girls, Full House, Grey’s Anatomy, and more. That said, there are still a few shows that haven’t popped up on a major service for whatever reason, and one of those includes Fran Drescher‘s The Nanny. The hit show was a favorite from 1993 to 1999, and Drescher recently teased that a whole new legion of fans will get a chance to watch it, though she wasn’t spilling the beans on which streaming service it would be coming too.
A fan tweeted at Drescher and begged for The Nanny to be put on a streaming platform, and Drescher responded with a promising tease that points towards later this week for a big announcement, saying “Awe hang in! We got a surprise for you! Announcement this week! Stay tuned! Weeeee!!!”
It remains to be seen where it will show up, but Hulu or would be the likely suspects. Netflix is more into its original programming these days, but Hulu and Prime are always looking to build up their classic TV show lineup of favorites.

‘made For Love’ Spins A Twisted Romance In New Trailer & Key Art
Its the first time the series will be available to stream. It previously aired in syndication on Lifetime, Nick at Nite, TV Land, Logo, and Freeform.
Over six seasons, which aired from 1993 to 1999, The Nanny followed Dreschers fashionista Fran Fine, who was hired to care for the three children of widowed Broadway producer Maxwell Sheffield, played by Charles Shaughnessy. It also starred Daniel Davis, Lauren Lane, Nicholle Tom, Benjamin Salisbury, Madeline Zima, Renée Taylor, Ann Morgan Guilbert, and Rachel Chagall.
While Drescher has become well known due to her role on The Nanny, she was thinking about giving up acting before landing the gig. I did a pilot that I was miserable doing, playing, like, a third banana, she told TV Insider in August 2020. I gave myself five years to get on the inside in a big way and be in control of my own destiny, or get out and do something else.
New On Tubi October 2021
That high-pitched, nasally siren you hear is a BIG! GAY! ALERT! blaring because The Nanny is now streaming on HBO Max! This is not an April Fools joke! This is an all hands on deck moments, and by deck I mean remote and/or laptop keyboard. Drop what youre doing, call in sick to work, rearrange your already empty schedule and get ready for six seasons of campy comedy.
Why is this such a big moment? Because The Nanny, a formative piece of gay pop culture history, has never been available on streaming until this very moment. Weve had to settle for just watching The Nanny in weekend marathons on Logo or letting our DVRs fill up with recordings that are 60% Nanny and 40% commercials. No more! Now we can just watch The Nanny unedited and uninterrupted in all of its gaudy, gorgeous glory.
And if youre wondering whether or not a sitcom about a quick-witted, fashion-forward icon traveling over the bridge from Flushing to the front door of a Broadway mega producer and getting hired on the spot to be his live-in nanny holds up, the answer is yes.The Nanny was never critically acclaimed during its initial run it only won one Emmy, but it was for costuming and very well deserved. Look at the material! But what critics of the 90s didnt get is that The Nannys big, broad humor had a lot of heart and universal appeal. That also means its appeal is timeless and easily translates to 2021. Lets just say that Niles would win every single reading challenge on any Drag Race season.
