What Are The Best Online Bookstores

Where I Buy Books!

Although all of the online bookstores mentioned above have their advantages, Amazon is still one of the best-known names in the industry. Its website is extremely user-friendly, it ships internationally, it has an extensive selection of books of all types, and it makes it easy to find a particular book in no time.

At the same time, more and more people are trying to avoid using Amazon, switching to using smaller, potentially more ethical, companies. We’re not going to tell you which approach is the right one; just make sure you find an online bookstore that meets your needs.

Amazon’s Abebooks Backs Down After Booksellers Stage Global Protest

After almost 600 booksellers withdrew 3.5m books from the secondhand marketplace in support of countries dropped by the website, it apologises for a bad decision

An extraordinary and unprecedented global protest from antiquarian booksellers has forced the Amazon-owned secondhand marketplace AbeBooks to backtrack on its decision to pull out of several countries.

AbeBooks had told bookshops in countries including Hungary, the Czech Republic, South Korea and Russia that it would no longer support them from 30 November, citing migration to a new payment service provider as the reason for the withdrawal. The move prompted almost 600 booksellers in 27 countries to pull more than 3.5m titles from Abebooks site, putting them on vacation as they cited the motto of the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers, Amor librorum nos unit .

On Wednesday, president of ILAB Sally Burdon met AbeBooks chief executive Arkady Vitrouk to discuss the decision. It was agreed that booksellers in the four affected countries would be able to trade under current conditions until 31 December, with a solution to allow them to use the website indefinitely to follow.

She described the protest, which was sparked by British bookseller Simon Beattie, as extraordinary and unprecedented, and said that without it, I know we would not have so easily got this excellent outcome.

A Penny For Your Books

Ever since a university gave me a literature degree certifying that I have read Chaucer in the original Middle English, my taste in books has reverted to very specific, lowbrow stuff. I like murder mysteries, heist books and spy books, preferably from the 1950s through the 1980s. These titles can be hard to find; many of them are out of print, unavailable on Kindle, and their presence in the New York Public Library is hit or miss.

But in recent years, my bookshelves have swelled. Old John le Carré and Donald E. Westlake and Lawrence Block titles are easier than ever to find online, along with pretty much every other book published in the last century. Theyre all on Amazon, priced incredibly low, and sold by third-party booksellers nobody has ever heard of.

Better-known titles with more robust print circulation quickly obey the seesaw of supply and demand; after time, their prices can sink even lower, because of the increased number of copies floating around. Take Jennifer Egans A Visit From the Goon Squad: You can buy a new hardcover or paperback copy for $18.82 or $9.19, from Amazon itself, or download the Kindle version for $8.56. Or, as with hundreds of thousands of other books on Amazon, you can click through to the used section and buy the 2011 Pulitzer Prize winner for fiction for a penny.

I’m Sick And Tired Of Buying Like New Books From Thriftbooks And Getting A Totally Destroyed Book

I’m a pretty big used book buyer. That being said, buying a used book without a photo of the actual book is pretty risky these days. I tend to buy Like New or Very Good ones instead of the Good or Acceptable ones, as the latter tend to be pretty trashed. . Ebay is a pretty good forum to buy used books since the quality of the items tend to be pretty consistent throughout my experience, even with multitude of different sellers . Like New or Very Good tend to be pretty reliable.

Thriftbooks have better deals, but the people working there seem to lack a working knowledge of what the quality of the books mean. Here is their own definition on their website:

*;Like New:;An apparently unread copy in perfect condition. Dust cover is intact; pages are clean and are not marred by notes or folds of any kind.

;*;Very Good:;A copy that has been read, but remains in excellent condition. Pages are intact and are not marred by notes or highlighting, but may contain a neat previous owner name. The spine remains undamaged.

;*;Good:;A copy that has been read, but remains in clean condition. All pages are intact, and the cover is intact. The spine may show signs of wear. Pages can include limited notes and highlighting, and the copy can include “From the library of” labels or previous owner inscriptions.

;*;Acceptable:;A readable copy. All pages are intact, and the cover is intact . Pages can include considerable notes–in pen or highlighter–but the notes cannot obscure the text.

Were headquartered in Seattle. We have eight fulfillment centers in the U.S. We employ about 900 folks, and we have annual revenue of around $150 million. We were founded back in 2003 literally in the founders living room. An opportunity had arisen then, which was Amazon opening up its APIs to third-party sellers like us.

PEC: Was your vision at the time to sell only used books?

Ward: No. One of the founders worked at a large thrift store in the Seattle area. He had access to used books. That was the genesis of the idea. As we grew, we decided to stay focused on books. Weve become quite good it over the years. But early on it was happenstance.

The Best Places To Buy Used Books Online

Calling all bookworms! Whether you’re part of a book club, just love reading or need new textbooks to get you through the school year, there’s one pretty harsh reality we all need to face: books can be expensive. Trust me, I basically turned my entire living room into a library, and I don’t even want to know how many dollars that took. But there are ways to score books on sale. New bestsellers are usually marked down as part of the Chapters Indigo Deals of the Week, and you can save even more by buying used books.

But buying used books online usually means tracking down websites you’ve never heard of and not getting the chance to flip through them means you might end up with one somebody already underlined and highlighted. So to help out, we put together a quick guide to buying used books online in Canada. Here, you’ll find a list of places where you can actually buy used books, as well as tips for selling your own books online.

What To Know Before You Buy Used Books

This might seem obvious, but, first of all, remember that used books are … used. That means someone has likely read them in entirety before and flipped through all those pages. You may see notes in the margins, highlighted passages and pages that are slightly stained or dog-eared. They may also come with “used” stickers or stamps on the cover, as well as multiple price stickers or markings from different bookstores.

If you’re buying used textbooks, keep in mind that newer editions may not always be available, and used textbooks rarely include additional materials like CDs, download codes for PDF versions and charts or other reference guides. If you’re studying something like English literature, this shouldn’t be a problem, but you might want to be careful if you’re in a field where information is rapidly changing, like medicine or engineering. In those cases, you should try to buy the most recent versions of textbooks whenever possible.

But finally, the one thing you need to know about buying used books is that it can really save you money. Even if you’re just looking for titles you’ve read at the library, you can usually score anywhere from a few dollars to almost the entire list price, just by buying used. So just keep that in mind the next time you shop.
