Today, Amazon has more than 200,000 mobile robots working inside its warehouse network, alongside hundreds of thousands of human workers. This robot army has helped the company fulfill its ever-increasing promises of speedy deliveries to Amazon Prime customers.

They defined the expectations for the modern consumer, said Scott Gravelle, the founder and CEO of Attabotics, a warehouse automation startup.

And those expectations of fast, free delivery driven by Amazon have led to a boom in the retail warehouse industry, with entrepreneurs like Gravelle and startups like Attabotics attempting to build smarter and cheaper robotic solutions to help both traditional retailers and younger e-commerce operations keep up with a behemoth like Amazon.

This robotics race led by Amazon will have a seismic impact on the warehouse industry, which employs more than 1.1 million Americans today. And the rise of these artificially intelligent robots means theres likely a day coming when these warehouse robots will be capable of replacing just about every human task, and human worker.

That sounds like a good thing, but new research indicates these robots may be increasing worker injury rates, even though theyre taking on some of the hard labor.

    Pickers Packers And Points

    Inside Amazon.com Warehouse (12 pics)

Most jobs at Amazon warehouses are those of pickers and packers. Pickers pull merchandise off storage shelves and place them in bins, then put the bins on conveyor belts to be taken to the packers. The packers package up the products, slap a label on them and put them on another conveyor belt to be taken to a waiting truck.

Emily Guendelsberger, a journalist, took a pre-Christmas job at Amazon in 2015 after the newspaper she worked for in Philadelphia closed. She lasted a month. But before she quit, it gave her enough experience to write one of the few first-hand accounts of what its like to work in an Amazon warehouse.

At first, she said, she got a certain pleasure from all the running around she was doing as a picker at the 25-acre Amazon fulfillment center outside Louisville, Kentucky.

A GPS-enabled, hand-held scanner would tell her what items to pull off the shelves, where to find them and then begin a countdown of the time she was allowed to complete the task. She would place the items in a yellow bin, known as a tote, that she would push around with her.

When a bin was two-thirds full, she would push it to the nearest conveyor belt and send it gliding off to parts unknown, then start a new one, Guendelsberger wrote in her 2019 book, On The Clock.

Every time the scanner has me squat down to get something from a low drawer, its a little harder to force myself back up to standing.

    Does Amazon Do Overtime

In March, Amazon said it would raise hourly wages and provide double overtime for warehouse and delivery workers. Amazon currently pays $15 per hour or more in some areas of the U.S. for warehouse and delivery jobs. Any employees working overtime at its U.S. warehouses will earn double their hourly wages.13

State And Local Policymakers Seeking Maximum Long

The promise of luring jobs is nearly always and everywhere a very hard one for policymakers to ignore. The jobs gained by one locality that lures an establishment from another locality may be zero-sum, but theyre very visible and easy to point to. Jobs that are displaced by luring an establishment are more diffuse. And the specific jobs that could have been gained in the long-term by instead investing in education or other public goods are harder to celebratelocal officials cant easily organize a ribbon-cutting ceremony around those kinds of jobs. Nevertheless, our findings support other research suggesting that state and local policymakers should consider the following points when debating whether to extend incentives to lure businesses:

Tax incentives likely constitute an unneeded giveaway

At an intuitive level, offering tax incentives for firms to move businesses to particular locales may strike some as sensible. All else being equal, firms likely would prefer to locate in a particular area if doing so lowered tax costs and hence increased profits. However, there are other considerations that significantly influence location decisions, including access to customers, the quality of public services needed to run businesses and access to a pool of qualified workers.5

Tax incentives may do little to boost overall employment

Investments in public services are more effective than tax incentives at generating long-term economic growth

Amazon Warehouse Employees Have Some Complaints About Break Times

Because Amazon monitors activity, employees tend to adhere pretty strictly to the allotted 30-minute and 15-minute break periods. The problem, according to Kyle, is that these windows dont account for the fact that it takes time to navigate the massive facility to get to a break room, bathroom, or to the parking lot.

When you take a break, you log out and are supposed to come back within 30 minutes, so theres no more than 30 minutes between the last time you scanned an item and the next item, Kyle says. But the problem is it takes five to seven minutes to walk to your car or to the break room, so its not really a full 30-minute break.

Taking a load off at your workstation, at least in Kyles warehouse, is off-limits. Youre not allowed to sit on things at a station. There are no chairs provided. You can make chairs with totes or sit on the steps. I usually choose to go to my car.

    Working In The Warehouse

The typical Amazon employee makes less than you think

The Amazon jobs that have gotten the most media attention have been those at the companys fulfillment centers, which is its nickname for warehouses. Amazon has about 75 huge fulfillment centers in North America that employ more than 125,000 full-time workers.

The tech company utilizes a variety of building types for fulfillment centers, and its largest ones are around 800,000 square feet in size. Typically, these warehouses employ about 1,500 full-time associates. In some fulfillment centers, Amazon employees work alongside robots that help sort, pick, and transport packages.

Amazon increased its minimum wage in late 2018, raising the rate to $15 per hour. The new wage covers full-time, part-time, temporary, and seasonal positions for about 350,000 employees who work in warehouses, customer service, and even at the newly acquired Whole Foods stores.

Full-time employees at Amazon also receive a generous benefits package, including medical, dental, and vision insurance, a 401-retirement plan, and up to 20 weeks of paid maternal or paternal leave.

Sounds like a sweet deal, right? The pay may be good, and the benefits may be comprehensive. Still, many reports from media sources and ex-Amazon employees say working in a fulfillment center is dangerous and intense.
