The product detail page is where the sales happen on Amazon. The information you put on this page helps sell your product and encourage shoppers to buy. Candle brand Homesick has a stellar example of a product page that sells. Lets look at why.

Targeted product title

Your product title is essential for an Amazon listing for two reasons. One, it captures shoppers attention and tells them they are in the right place. Two, it can improve your click-through rate in search and improve your SEO ranking.

Product titles have a 200-character limit, but youll want to keep your title between 60 and 80 characters. Why?

  • A Skubana study of more than 3,000 high-ranking Amazon listings found that 33% of them fell between 60 and 80 characters.
  • The guidelines recommend it.
  • Amazon can shorten product titles over 112 characters.

Every word in your product title is searchable. Include the most relevant search in the beginning of your product title. Youll notice Homesick uses its brand name , the product line , the style , features , and the container size.

This gives shoppers a clear and concise description of your product. They can then make a decision whether to stay on your page or go find the product elsewhere.

Clear product images

Your main photo should clearly show what the product is before zooming in. Additional photos should provide additional angles of the product and, if relevant, lifestyle imagery.

Fulfilled By Seller Fees

Sellers who fulfill their own orders dont pay fulfillment fees, per se. Amazon charges the buyer a standard shipping rate and then credits the sellers account with this amount.

But shipping credits dont always cover the sellers shipping expenses, so it becomes an extra cost.

For instance, Amazon US charges a book buyer $3.99 for standard shipping to the USA. But using the cheapest service available, USPS Media Mail, it will cost an Individual seller more than that to ship any BMVD item above 3lbs.

However, Pro merchants have several advantages. For one thing, they usually spend less per shipment due to negotiated courier discounts.

Then theres also the fact that they can set their own shipping rates .

That said, Amazon is a very competitive marketplace. Many professional sellers offer free shipping to one-up their competitors.

So, even as a Pro, its hard to compete. Especially without a clever repricing tool like Sellery that takes your shipping costs into account.

To make matters worse, new were introduced in April. These were due to a 5% fuel and inflation surcharge that aims to offset Amazons losses due to inflation and rising fuel prices. Below is a breakdown of the new fees, surcharge included.

The Seller Account Fee

To sell on Amazon, you first need to set up a seller account. There are two types of seller account Individual and Professional.

An Individual account is ideal for small sellers just starting there is no charge to register nor a monthly fee to pay. For an Individual seller account, Amazon charges you a per-item flat transaction fee of $0.99 for every sale you make.

The Professional account costs $39.99 per month. There is no per-item flat transaction fee of $0.99 when you sell an item with a Professional seller subscription.

A quick calculation tells you that if you manage to sell over 40 items per month, it makes sense to sign up for a professional account as youll save in the long run on that flat transaction fee.

If you choose an Individual seller account, you dont need to pay the flat transaction fee up-front. Amazon deducts fees from the income of the sale.

If you choose to sell via a Professional account, then the $39.99 monthly fee is also deducted from your Amazon income. Though if you dont have enough funds in your Amazon balance, Amazon will charge your credit card.

So in the example of our Dirty Dancing DVD, I have a professional seller account and make hundreds of sales per month, so I dont need to factor in any Amazon account fees here.

Cost Breakdown Of Size And Weight Fulfillment Fees

Amazon launches Amazon Cash, a way to shop its site without a bank card ...

Because of the many variances in fees, what a seller is charged depends greatly on what exactly they are selling via Amazon FBA. There is no one size fits all model with this service.

The two main categories that FBA uses to determine their fulfillment fees are standard size and oversize.

Standard size: product weight is less than 20 lbs. or dimensions that are smaller than 18x14x8 in.

Fulfillment fees for standard size products can vary anywhere from $2.41 for products that weigh under 1 lb. to more than $4.71 if it is over 2 lbs. Anything over 2 lbs. is charged an additional $0.38/lb over the first 2 lbs.

Oversize: anything that does not qualify for standard size. Oversize products have fees that are $8.13 on the low end, for small oversize (over 70 lbs. or having dimensions greater than 60 inches on the longest measured size, with the same $.38/lb fee over the first 2 lbs. as the standard size products carry.

Fulfillment fees for special oversize products begin at $137.32, with an additional fee of $0.91/lb. over the first 90 lbs.

Amazon uses dimensional weight, which factors a shipments density when calculating the shipping cost. This means that the size and weight of the products is an important factor when using FBA.

Additionally, all apparel incurs an additional $0.40/item fee.

Shipping Credits & Costs

These charges are not seller fees, but they can cost you money if youre not careful. If you ship Amazon orders yourself, Amazon pays you a shipping credit on every sale to cover your shipping costsbut theres a catch. The credit Amazon pays sellers is generally low compared to the shipping rates you actually pay to ship orders.

Depending on what you sell and the total size and weight of each package you ship, you may wind up spending far more to ship orders than you receive from Amazons shipping credit. To ensure you dont lose all of your profits to shipping costs, you need to know how much youll get from Amazon for each item you sell.

You can use the Amazon shipping credit chart below to estimate your credits for each product.

To see if credits will cover your shipping costs, use the chart above to figure out what Amazon will offer you for shipping your products. Then, compare these amounts to your actual shipping costs.

If you sell small, lightweight items, you might come out ahead. But if your products ship in large and/or heavy boxes, you might find youll lose on every sale.

One thing that can lower your shipping costs dramatically and boost your Amazon profit is shipping software. With it, you can quickly compare costs and automate your shipping tools.

And Amazon can even simplify shipping, all while getting your product in front of the eyes of potentially millions of people. But you must consider all the Amazon seller fees. Quickly adding up, selling on Amazon can cost more than you may have imagined. If the seller fees on Amazon are too high for your budget or your bottom line, consider an eCommerce merchant account for guidance on accepting payments at a lower cost.

Applying What We Learned

So lets put this into real life.

Youre selling a kitchen product on Amazon for $20 and using FBA.

First, you need to determine your referral percentage fee. Looking at the chart, you know that Amazon deducts 15% from your sale price just because youre selling on their platform.

Sale Price – Referral Percentage = $17

Secondly, you need to determine whether your product is media or non-media. Since your product is a kitchen utensil, you know that its non-media. Therefore, you can already know that both an order handling fee and a pick and pack fee will be applied.

$17 – Order Handling Fee – Pick and Pack Fee = $14.94

And lastly, youll need to determine the weight of your product. Lets say that due to its height, it is considered a large standard size, and it weighs 1 lb. Using the chart above, we can calculate the weight handling fee to be $0.96.

$14.94 – Weight Handling Fee = $13.98

Now you have an actual picture of what your total Amazon fees will be, and this number can be used to calculate your overhead. Regardless of your product, you should always use this formula to calculate your Amazon fees:

Amazon profit = Sale Price – Referral Percentage – Order Handling – Pick and Pack – Weight Handling
