The Operating System For The Internet

They didnt exactly have an aha moment, but they did begin to build on the initial nugget of an idea that began at the retreat and in the Summer of 2003, they started to think of this set of services as an operating system of sorts for the internet. Remember, this is still three years before they launched AWS, so it was an idea that would take time to bake.

I dont think any of us had the audacity to predict it would grow as big or as fast as it has.Andy Jassy, AWS CEO

If you believe companies will build applications from scratch on top of the infrastructure services if the right selection existed, and we believed they would if the right selection existed, then the operating system becomes the internet, which is really different from what had been the case for the 30 years, Jassy said.

That led to a new discussion about the components of this operating system, and how Amazon could help build them. As they explored further, by the Fall of 2003 they concluded that this was a green field where all the components required to run the internet OS had yet to be built at which point Im imagining their eyes lit up.

We realized we could contribute all of those key components of that internet operating system, and with that we went to pursue this much broader mission, which is AWS today, which is really to allow any organization or company or any developer to run their technology applications on top of our technology infrastructure platform.

Aws Infrastructure And Technology

AWS operates globally in what are called regions 25 in all spread across six continents. Each region consists of multiple availability zones. And these are the physical data centers where computers live and are geographically separated to reduce the likelihood of a local disaster taking out a whole region.

Additionally, there are over 200 edge locations scattered around the world as part of AWSs content delivery network .

In addition to the publicly available regions, there are a few special regions. Two regions are designated for use by those working in and for the U.S. government so-called AWS GovCloud. There are also two regions in China, which are operated by local qualified companies in accordance with Chinese law and regulations. All of these regions availability zones and edge locations are tied together through AWSs private high-speed fiber-optic network.

AWS has even invented its own proprietary hardware to make its network faster and more robust. And chances are youre already using the AWS network. If you use Netflix, Twitch, Hulu, Reddit, or Slack, all are AWS customers.

Monolithic Vs Microservices Architecture

With monolithic architectures, all processes are tightly coupled and run as a single service. This means that if one process of the application experiences a spike in demand, the entire architecture must be scaled. Adding or improving a monolithic applications features becomes more complex as the code base grows. This complexity limits experimentation and makes it difficult to implement new ideas. Monolithic architectures add risk for application availability because many dependent and tightly coupled processes increase the impact of a single process failure.

With a microservices architecture, an application is built as independent components that run each application process as a service. These services communicate via a well-defined interface using lightweight APIs. Services are built for business capabilities and each service performs a single function. Because they are independently run, each service can be updated, deployed, and scaled to meet demand for specific functions of an application.

Why Does Aws Matter

AWS, like other cloud service providers, offers the ability to instantly provision computing resources on demand. Compared to the laborious task of planning and building on-site data center infrastructure, along with the requisite hardware upgrades, maintenance costs, server cooling requirements, electricity costs and use of floorspace particularly for offices in urban centers with associated real estate costs the savings can add up very quickly.

Amazon S3 is an object storage service that stores data as objects within buckets. Anobject is a file and any metadata that describesthe file. A bucket is a container for objects.

To store your data in Amazon S3, you first create a bucket and specify a bucket name andAWS Region. Then, you upload your data to that bucket as objects in Amazon S3. Each objecthas a key , which is the unique identifier for the object within thebucket.

S3 provides features that you can configure to support your specific use case. Forexample, you can use S3 Versioning to keep multiple versions of an object in the samebucket, which allows you to restore objects that are accidentally deleted oroverwritten.

Buckets and the objects in them are private and can be accessed only if you explicitlygrant access permissions. You can use bucket policies, AWS Identity and Access Management policies,access control lists , and S3 Access Points to manage access.

Amazon ECS is a container management service that was introduced by AWS in 2014 as a simplified way to address the complexity of container management on Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud instances. Using Amazon ECS, containers can be easily deployed, individually isolated, and are easy to distribute across multiple endpoints because theyre lightweight.
