Fba Vs Mfn: The Bottom Line

FBA sellers can offer all of Amazons shipping options, including Prime, and access Amazons stellar shipping and distribution networks worldwide.

That means FBA sellers are better able to set themselves apart from their competition and win the Buy Box. FBA sellers do, however, have to bear extra cost Amazon charges a monthly fee for warehouse space used.

Small businesses and those without the ability to ship and provide customer service benefit most from FBA. High-volume sellers also benefit greatly from FBA. But, FBA sellers do not gain any advantage based on Amazons policies concerning fungible goods.

MFN sellers have the advantage of packaging and shipping their products exactly the way they want. They can also add unique, personal elements to their packaging, including hand-written thank you notes. But, that also means they also have to pick, pack, ship, and handle customer service.

An added disadvantage to MFN is that many buyers arent as eager to patronize MFN businesses. Sellers who already have a shipping system and warehouses in place are best able to make the most of MFN.

The primary complaint sellers voice about FBA is packaging failures and resulting returns. A solution could be more careful labeling and instructions for Amazon about products. And, sellers can use MFN for select products that theyre more concerned about, while using FBA for less accident-prone items.

The chief complaint sellers voice concerning MFN is their loss of business to FBA sellers.

Challenges With Last Mile Delivery

In addition to costs, last mile deliveries pose other unique challenges.

Traveling in Urban AreasIf you have ever driven through a big city, you know that the roads are narrow, traffic is a nightmare, and parking is near impossible. This makes deliveries a bit more time-consuming than they would be in the suburbs, which can lead to significant delays.

Traveling in Rural AreasOn the other hand, rural locations have nothing but space which is also a problem. Drivers may need to travel miles in between stops, increasing travel times and wait times.

Delivering Large and Heavy ItemsAnything can be ordered online, including bulky items like furniture. Ideally, there will be two delivery persons to carry the large item to the customers doorstep, but this is not always the case. Either way, the logistics of getting the item out of the truck can be time-consuming.

Lack of Drivers and VehiclesEven before the coronavirus caused delivery personnel to become essential workers, the U.S. was facing a driver shortage. As we mentioned earlier, many businesses are also relying on costly ad hoc vehicle acquisitions. However, with the continual surge of eCommerce, these as-needed vehicles may soon need to turn into leases.

What External Freight Makes Sense For Amazons Network

This is an excerpt from Thursdays Point of Sale retail supply chain newsletter sponsored by ArcBest.

During peak holiday season 2013, Amazon ran into major roadblocks. The company had built a foolproof e-commerce platform where you could buy pretty much anything, and it had a warehouse network to fulfill millions of daily orders. But its transportation providers at the time, namely UPS, FedEx and the Postal Service, were unable to handle Amazons peak volume surge.

The following year, Amazon began building its own global transportation network from the ground up. In the seven years since, Amazon Logistics has delivered more than 10 billion packages and has grown to over 400,000 drivers worldwide, 40,000 tractors, 70,000 trailers, 30,000 delivery vans and a fleet of more than 70 planes. One of its biggest infrastructure outlays, the $1.5 billion Amazon Air hub in northern Kentucky, became fully operational in August. According to SJ Consulting Group, Amazon is now shipping 72% of its own packages, up from 46.6% in 2019. Similar growth has occurred with its warehouse fleet, which has added more than 100 million square feet of space in less than three years. Currently, 77% of the U.S. population lives within an hour of an Amazon warehouse, up from just 51% in 2018, according to UBS.

Pros And Cons To Fulfilling Via Amazon Mfn

Amazon MWS (Marketplace Web Services) – Amazon Merchant Transport Utility (AMTU)

One clear advantage for MFN sellers is that they can ensure their packaging is perfect for their products. This leads to fewer damaged products being reported by customers, and, as a result, fewer returns.

MFN sellers can also create custom packaging to differentiate their Amazon store from competitors. To take this even further, MFN sellers can create custom receipts and even include hand-written thank-you notes to customers.

Of course, having to handle the packaging and shipping is a clear disadvantage to using MFN. Worse yet, MFN sellers have to deal with customer service issues and returns. These are time-consuming and, at times, difficult tasks, and the fees paid to FBA is often worth it.

The other main disadvantage to MFN is that buyers arent always as happy to use it. How much this impacts your business isnt always clear, but Prime users spend more than non-Prime shoppers on average. And, they also tend to purchase Prime products over non-Prime ones thats what theyre paying for, after all.

Using MFN may also decrease your chances of winning the Buy Box versus FBA competitors.

Some sellers test each fulfillment method with limited inventory using both MFN and FBA listings so they can see which works better for them. Sometimes, MFN and FBA fulfillment have different advantages for the same seller, depending on the products being sold.

What Is Last Mile Delivery

The supply chain process involves three major milestones:

First mile is the distribution of an item from the manufacturer.

Middle mile involves long-distance transportation and includes going through customs, port or hub storage and loading, and inland transportation. It brings products to the final station before being loaded onto vehicles for delivery.

Last mile, sometimes called final mile, is where the item is sent out from a local warehouse or fulfillment center for its final delivery to the customer.

Every step of the supply chain process is crucial, but last mile is where the most impact can be made for the customer experience. If a product arrives late, damaged, or is never delivered, there is a good chance that the customer will shop with a competitor next time. Essentially, last mile is where the business brings their values, their brand, and their promise to the customers door.

Amazon Business Model: Fulfilment And Delivery Network

I very frequently get the question: Whats going to change in the next 10 years? And that is a very interesting question its a very common one. I almost never get the question: Whats not going to change in the next 10 years? And I submit to you that that second question is actually the more important of the two because you can build a business strategy around the things that are stable in time.

n our retail business, we know that customers want low prices, and I know thats going to be true 10 years from now. They want fast delivery they want vast selection. Its impossible to imagine a future 10 years from now where a customer comes up and says, Jeff I love Amazon, I just wish the prices were a little higher I love Amazon, I just wish youd deliver a little more slowly. Impossible. And so the effort we put into those things, spinning those things up, we know the energy we put into it today will still be paying off dividends for our customers 10 years from now. When you have something that you know is true, even over the long term, you can afford to put a lot of energy into it.

Check courier company that delivers the package, if its AMZL then it could mean a few things:

Tracking Doesn’t Match Carrier’s Website

It’s common to see slight differences in the tracking information listed in Your Account and the details on a carrier’s website. Every carrier uses their own language to indicate different shipment statuses. Amazon simplifies the updates in Your Account to make them easier to understand.

  • UPS: “A UPS shipping label has been created”. Amazon status: Shipment has left seller facility and is in transit. It means the shipment has left the Amazon or merchant fulfillment center.
  • USPS: “Notice left”. Amazon status: Delivery Attempted. It means a delivery attempt was made for your package.
  • UPS: “Same Day Will Call”. Amazon status: Available for pickup. It means the package is available for pickup at the carrier’s facility.

are far heftier than FBM. With Amazon Fulfilled by Merchant, sellers primarily have a monthly subscription fee, a small fee per order placed, and a referral fee for each order.

Avoid Amazons strict FBA requirements

Amazon is known for changing its FBA requirements without giving sellers enough time to adapt to changes . These requirements can be a hassle for merchants fulfilling on Amazon. With FBM, there are fewer rules and penalties for failing to hit their strict standards for each Amazon Prime order.

Retain greater control of your business

With Amazon FBA, your branding takes a hit. Customers receive a box with Amazons branding not yours. Customers may associate your products with Amazon and will communicate with Amazons customer support if there are issues. When you use FBM for the order fulfillment process, you can better ensure you are providing the customer experience you want.

Canned water brand Open Water moved to FBM from FBA and has ShipBob fulfilling all of their orders. They found not only ShipBob did a better job of packing it all correctly and had better rates, but Amazon was putting too much plastic in their orders, which doesnt align well with their eco-friendly brand.
