Food & Beverage Remains Growth Category
The online channel will lead in global grocery sales growth going forward, according to Gray. The first one is going to be e-commerce. Were forecasting a 10.5% compound annual growth rate over the next five years, the shift to e-commerce as a result of the pandemic. Then Id say discount, as consumers continue to focus on value. Discount and convenience have always been growth channels. Obviously. youve got Aldi and Lidl developing a presence in the U.S., he said.
In some markets around the world, the larger store formats have been struggling to grow their sales, Gray added. So in terms of growth channels, e-commerce, discount and then, potentially, smaller formats. The large formats are not going to grow as well.
Overall, Edge Retail Insight expects global edible grocery online sales to swell from $149.6 billion in 2021 to $246.3 billion in 2026, with store-based sales projected to rise from $2.79 trillion to $3.35 billion. That translates to a 10.5% CAGR for e-commerce and a 3.7% CAGR for brick-and-mortar.
What’s In Store For Amazon
What is clear is that all this work points to Amazon’s increased interest in brick-and-mortar retail, a market with huge potential for the company. Even though Amazon is the biggest e-commerce merchant in the US, online sales account for just 11% of all retail, so expanding into physical stores is a way for it to maintain its healthy growth. But after years of rumors that Amazon was on the cusp of storming the physical retail world with hundreds or thousands of new stores, the company is instead taking a much slower approach, building out a handful of concepts and not seeming to settle on any particular idea just yet.
There’s greater risk here, too, since Amazon is expanding into physical retail during the so-called retail apocalypse, with US stores closing by the thousands. It ends up more people are shopping online these days, and a big reason for that is — Amazon.

How Much Does Amazon Fresh Cost
Aside from the required Amazon Prime membership, the Amazon Fresh service itself has no ongoing subscription cost. It’s free.
However, depending on the cost of your grocery order, you might need to pay a delivery fee. Orders under $35 have a variable delivery fee of up to $10, while $35 or more are delivered free. Some cities have a higher cap on free delivery in New York, for example, you need to place orders over $50 to get free delivery.
Store Concept Could Be Aimed At Online Shoppers Or Organic Crowd
Amazon says its new Amazon Fresh grocery stores it is now rolling out are designed for in-store or online customers and offers free same-day delivery for Prime members.
The stores also feature what Amazon calls the Amazon Dash Cart that allows shoppers to skip checkout lines. A shopper uses his or her Amazon account to sign into a smart cart, which then uses computer vision and sensors to identify what the shopper places into the carts. The shopper then can leave the store using a “Dash Cart” lane Amazon calls it “just walk out” shopping technology.

What Is Amazon Fresh
Piloted in 2007, delivers groceries to customers doors and also provides pickup services from select retail locations. Amazon Fresh offers free grocery delivery to Prime members in select regions on Amazon Fresh orders that meet the local free delivery threshold . With Amazon Fresh, shoppers fill up their carts on Amazon, then select a 2-hour delivery window. A trained Amazon shopper will pick up and deliver the selected items. Amazon Fresh and other online grocery delivery services have been in higher demand than ever during the COVID-19 pandemic. Many services, Amazon included, have begun offering contactless delivery during the pandemic.
Amazon also used its first-ever Amazon Fresh grocery store to serve local customers ordering groceries online in the Woodland Hills, California area.
More On Amazon Stores
Plus, he said, having these stores offers another facet of Amazon’s ecosystem, helping build customer loyalty and encouraging them to shop more with the e-retailer. It’s the same reason why the company sells its devices at low prices — if you own a Fire TV stick or Echo speaker, you’re more likely to shop on Amazon and become an Amazon Prime member.
The fact that Amazon developed four different grocery ideas points to its huge interest in that area, Lipsman said, since it will help the company expand in online grocery delivery and click-and-collect groceries.
But, hey, even if these stores all turn out to be a bust, it won’t harm the company, he said. “Amazon can afford to experiment and spin up a few stores that don’t pan out.”

Amazon Grocery Strategy Has Many Moving Parts
One prong of is its acquisition of Whole Foods, for which Amazon paid $13.7 billion. Another is , some two dozen grocery stores, either open or announced, that rely on customer smartphone apps to eliminate checkout lines. Amazon also offers multiple delivery services, which include Amazon Fresh, Amazon Pantry and Amazon Subscribe & Save. Meanwhile, an entirely new Amazon-branded grocery store chain will launch in 2020 that analysts say will offer mainstream products, in contrast to the high-end and organic offerings of Whole Foods.
Amazon’s multifaceted approach to food retail leaves questions about where the strategy is headed.
Is the strategy to simply try everything and see what works? Will these various stores and services somehow combine in the future to make Amazon a grocery giant at the level of Walmart, Costco and Kroger?
As far as Robin Hodgskin is concerned, Amazon is getting it right. “I work in Portland and use Whole Foods, which I love. I go about two times per month and always leave with ten times what I intended,” said Hodgskin, a financial services executive. Hodgskin added that she enjoys Amazon Prime discounts, Amazon Meal Kit packaged dinners for two, and what she perceives to be lower prices overall. She also appreciates that the store offers local items, such as craft beer.
Amazon Fresh Grocery Store Opens In Westmont With Just Walk Out Technology
Illinois newest Amazon Fresh grocery store lets shoppers walk out with their purchases, with no stop at checkout or high-tech shopping cart required.
The 35,000-square-foot grocery store opened Thursday in Westmont. Its Amazons fifth in Illinois and the third nationwide to use the just walk out technology, which uses cameras and other sensors to track items as customers pick them up and add them to a virtual shopping cart.
The technology has been in use at the e-commerce giants , including five in Chicago, for a couple years. Amazon needed to make sure it could track purchases in a much larger store with a wider range of merchandise before bringing it to grocery stores, said spokesperson Laura Hayes.
Its designed for customers who want to skip the hassle of waiting in line but still prefer shopping in stores and picking out items themselves, she said.
Other Amazon Fresh grocery stores also let shoppers skip the checkout line, but only if they use a special shopping cart that keeps track of purchases.
At the entrance, customers can choose between a traditional checkout experience or having the stores cameras and sensors track their purchases. If they want to skip the checkout line, shoppers must use Amazons app and scan their smartphone to enter and exit the store.
The store plans to offer curbside pickup and delivery from the store in the coming weeks.

What National Grocery Chain Is Coming To Middletown
A national grocery chain will be opening a store in Middletown Township, but the big question remains: which one?
Buzz about what is coming to the Lincoln Plaza shopping center off East Lincoln Highway near the Oxford Valley Mall has been going for months with locals speculating whether it will be an Amazon Fresh grocery store, Hobby Lobby, Trader Joes, or a variety of other stores.
Paramount Realty, which purchased the shopping plaza for more than $34 million last year, has advertised a national grocer is coming between the DSW and the Michaels.
Crews have been working on renovating the site in Lincoln Plaza for months.
Workers recently told LevittownNow.com they werent able to talk about what was going into the site.
Middletown Townships building and zoning director has been mum on whether he knows what is going into the space.
Renderings included in a Paramount Realty sales brochure shows a mockup of a grocery store that has similar stylings to that used by Amazons new chain of new grocery stores.
The rendering could be nothing more than an artistic proposal, but it provides a clue that could indicate what is filling the space.
Laura Hayes, an Amazon spokesperson, said the company doesnt comment on rumor or speculation.
An Amazon Fresh location also appears to be in the works along Street Road in Bensalem Township. The Bucks County Courier Times cited township officials when reporting in May that Amazon was bringing their new grocery concept to the township.

Where Can You Find These Stores
There are now over 25 Amazon Go stores in the US including the larger Amazon Go Grocery .
Amazon has also now launched the first store outside the US with the technology. This is in Ealing, UK and is called Amazon Fresh, matching the brand Amazon is using for online grocery. Other rumours pointed to stores in Oxford Circus , Notting Hill Gate before the Ealing store surfaced.
Various reports suggest that up to 30 stores could be opened in the UK and rumours suggest the launch partner is Morrisons – certainly the Amazon Fresh store is carrying a large offering of Amazon-branded grocery items which may have come from that source. Amazon and Morrisons already work together on the Amazon Fresh online delivery service.
According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, Amazon hopes to one day open 2,000 grocery and convenience stores. These stores might even have multiple formats.
I’ve visited Amazon’s original Seattle Amazon Go store to experience the “future of retail”. The first thing to note is that the technology works extremely well – I had my receipt emailed to us in no time at all and the system wasn’t fooled by us picking up things and putting them back through indecision.
The actual store itself is just like a normal convenience store – don’t expect to go in there and buy books, tech or clothes or anything else that Amazon sells online.
You don’t need to check out and you can replace items at any time.
Cameras And Sensors Track Your Actions
Amazon GO stores monitor everything from above and around you. Youll see cameras in the ceiling that monitor what you pick up and put back. There are weight sensors on shelves that track when items are removed.
All these devices are part of an AI-based system that automatically registers your actions in the store and adds the products you choose to your virtual cart.

What To Know About Amazon Fresh
is Amazon’s grocery pickup and delivery service, currently available in nearly two dozen US cities and some international locations. Using the Amazon Fresh website or the Amazon mobile app, you can place a grocery order online and have it delivered to your door or visit the store and pick up the completed order.
In general, most things you can find walking the aisles of a grocery store you can find and order through Amazon Fresh. That includes meats and deli items, fresh fruit and vegetables, canned foods, prepared meals, and more.
The exact inventory of grocery items depends on your area. In addition to offering some items from Whole Foods Market, orders are fulfilled from local Amazon warehouses.
Scan The Apps Qr Code To Enter The Store
Every Amazon GO store greets you with a row of electronic gates, where you scan your apps QR code before entry. When you do this, the system acknowledges your account, understands that youre entering the store, and will monitor your activity while inside.
You can scan other people in too, like friends or your kids. Be careful, though, because youre paying for anything they pick up, whether they tell you about it or not.

Walk Out With Your Shopping
Finally, when it comes to the cashierless experience, you do just walk out, especially if you only have shopping bags. If youre using a Dash Cart, youll need to unload in a special lane before leaving the store.
Either way, you dont stop to pay. Thats the beauty of the system. As you go through the checkout lane, your Amazon account and its associated credit card are charged automatically.
However, as already mentioned, Amazons system can make mistakes, like not registering that you put an item back on its shelf. Always check your receipt afterward or compare the Dash Carts bill against the items in it before checking out.
On that point, one more handy tool on the Amazon GO app is the ability to remove items from receipts and ask for refunds. For further assistance, you can also call and speak to a representative.
Amazon Turns Up Heat In Online Grocery Battle
Grocery and food sales via Amazon.com totaled $2.2 billion in the 2020 fourth quarter, up 20% year over year, including an October 2020 peak spurred by the rescheduled Amazon Prime Day, Edge Retail Insights report said. The researcher noted that third-party sales, via the Amazon Marketplace, represented 53% of the categorys total sales during the quarter. Beverages, pantry staples and snack food were the largest food and grocery segments in the period.
Its interesting with Amazon because they have a growing fresh business where theyre partnering with different retailers around the world Morrisons in the U.K., Dia in Spain, Gray said. The expansion of the fresh business internationally, I think, is going to be quite a big driver of growth. But also on , you obviously can order lots of groceries, ambient-type products with a longer life.
Walmart is driving grocery e-commerce growth via rapid expansion of its fulfillment capabilities, especially in pickup service, according to Gray.
After Alibaba, Amazon and Walmart, the rest of the top 10 global e-commerce retailers in edible grocery sales over the next five years are JD.com , Kroger , Pinduoduo , Tesco , Ahold Delhaize , E. Leclerc and Sainsburys .
