Fsa/hsa Eligible Mom & Baby Essentials On Amazon
As I was loading up my Amazon cart earlier this week with postpartum necessities and a few baby health essentials that were left on our registry, I noticed that many of the items I was shopping for were labeled as FSA/HSA eligible.
If you dont know, FSA stands for flexible spending account and HSA stands for health savings account. The two are very different. I participate in my companys FSA option through my benefits package because the money is deducted from my paycheck pre-tax and therefore saves me money over the year. Im able to use my FSA card on doctors visits and medical expenses throughout the year. Historically, I have allotted enough money to my FSA to pay for my co-pays for my regular, annual check ups and for my contact lenses and/or glasses. With a baby coming in the new year, I increased my FSA contribution to the maximum amount for 2020 to help cover the very large hospital bill we will incur at birth. Just a little side note in case youre wondering what Im even talking about and why its important.
Since its December and I still have money to spend in my FSA for the year, seeing FSA/HSA eligible on some of the products I was buying on Amazon peaked my interest.
I did a little digging and discovered that devoted to FSA and HSA eligible items.
Who knew? Certainly not me.
As a first time mom navigating what to expect postpartum and trying to stock up on supplies, this discovery made me very, very excited. Probably more excited than I should have been.

What Is An Hsa
HSA stands for health savings account. Think of an HSA as a tax-exempt trust, as the IRS defines it, managed by a trustee like a bank or an insurance company and into which you can tap to pay for medical charges like deductibles and copayments. Like an FSA, the money in an HSA is untaxed. How much you can contribute to an HSA depends on factors like the kind of coverage you have and even your age. Unlike an FSA, however, you can only set aside money in an HSA if you have a high deductible health insurance plan, which only covers preventive services before meeting your deductible .

What is an eligible expense? You can use your health FSA or HSA to pay for or reimburse yourself for your own eligible medical expenses, as well as your spouses and dependents eligible medical expenses. Some examples of eligible medical expenses include bandages, eyeglasses and blood glucose monitors.
Your HSA or FSA may be used only on eligible medical expenses that are not reimbursed or covered by another source. With the exception of insulin, over-the-counter medications are only eligible for reimbursement if they are prescribed to you, and you present the prescription at the time of purchase.
Will I be able to tell what products are and arent eligible expenses?HSA- and FSA-eligible products available on Amazon will display an FSA or HSA Eligible label on the products page. However, not all health care products available on Amazon are eligible expenses. If youve registered your FSA or HSA payment card through Amazon, you will only be able to pay for the cost, tax and shipping of an eligible expense with your funds. You will be prompted to use a different card for any other expenses you may have in your cart.

Making A Purchase With Your Starship Card
If youre ordering a few things on Amazon, including an HSA-eligible purchase, make sure you process separate orders. Youll have the option during checkout to pay for your entire online cart with one credit card but thats not great, since your Starship should only be used for HSA-eligible products!
Hopefully, Amazon will correct this in the future so consumers can choose what card to use for HSA approved items in their carts, but for now, just be mindful of this.
So far, Ive saved a ton of money on items I use all the time. Like blue-light blocking glasses I like to wear to save my eyes from computer strain. Theyre HSA approved and Im always looking for new styles. I also save money on feminine hygiene products that I have shipped right to my door.

Can You Use Your Fsa To Buy A Massage Gun
FSA accounts provide more flexibility than regular bank accounts when it comes to purchasing massage guns.
The Internal Revenue Code section 125 provides employees access to cafeteria plans that create Flex accounts within their insurance policies. Cafeteria items were originally referred to by this term, but flex spending has now caught onto it as well.
A flexible spending account can be used to pay for a variety of medical expenses and often for dependent care expenses. The FSA rolls over a portion of its balance every year, just like the HSA.
Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act allows you to carry over up to $500 without losing the funds.
Massage guns can only be purchased with FSA funds after receiving approval from the cafeteria plan provider. Similarly, the HSA does not have clear guidelines for massage guns.
On the other hand, if you look at the approved expense list, youll find that:
Are there any specific expenses that are not covered by FSA funds?
There is no mention of massage gear, massage therapy, or massages on that list for starters.

Who Should And Shouldnt Use An Hsa
You should consider opening an HSA if you:
- Want to plan now for medical expenses in retirement.According to Fidelity, as of August 2020, the average retired couple may need approximately $295,000 to cover health care expenses in retirement.
- Work for a company that offers only an HDHP for your health insurance. If youre in an HDHP and dont set up the HSA, youll have to use after-tax dollars to pay for expensive deductibles. You may also be missing out on HSA contributions from your employer.
- Enjoy good health and rarely go to the doctor. If this describes you, you may be able to save money due to the lower monthly premiums from your HDHP.
- Are disciplined at putting money aside. If youre a good saver and youll consistently fund your HSA, it may work for you.
- Want an additional emergency fund for medical expenses. This should be in addition to your fully-funded rainy day fund.
- Are interested in the tax advantages. HSAs can help you lower your taxable income. They also give you a chance to earn interest and investment returns tax-free.
You may not want to use an HSA if you:
- Live check to check. Your budget is too tight to set aside money in an HSA.
- Need to build savings. Consider setting up a rainy day fund before you contribute to an HSA.
- Have significant ongoing medical issues. If you know youll incur plenty of medical expenses, you may not want the high deductibles that come with the required HDHP.

Yes. However, if youre younger than 65, youll have to pay a 20% penalty on top of claiming the money as income on your tax return for that year. If youre 65 or older, your HSA funds act much like an IRA. Youll pay federal income tax based on your tax bracket but wont be penalized.
Remember, you can always avoid taxes completely by using your HSA funds only for qualified medical expenses.
Q: What If I Have Trouble Registering My Hsa Card
Certain HSA cards cannot be registered as FSA/HSA cards with Amazon, but can still be used if registered as credit cards. If you register your HSA card as a credit card, youll be responsible for ensuring the card is used only for eligible products. HSA cards registered as a credit card do not automatically restrict the types of products you can purchase with the card. Purchasing ineligible products or services with the card may require you to report them and pay additional taxes. Contact your plan administrator or employer for more information.

What Are Hsa Eligible Expenses
HSA is an acronym commonly used for health spending accounts, which are funds contributed, saved, and redistributed for health-related purposes such as diagnosing and treating medical conditions. Funds from such an account can be used to reimburse a person for costs related to disabilities such as mobility devices and artificial limbs. These monies can be used for routine medical and dental examinations. HSA funds may also be used for purchases of items such as contact lens cleaners, after-sun skincare products, and birth control.
There are some items that may be considered HSA eligible expenses if they are recommended by a medical professional. If a person spends money on those same items or services without a professional recommendation, HSA cannot be used. These include sexual counseling, breast reductions, and exercise equipment to treat a specific medical condition.
It is generally made clear that cosmetic procedures and items are not HSA eligible expenses. This could cause some people to disqualify costs that they believe fall within the cosmetic category but that actually tend to be reimbursable. For example, acnelaser treatment and scar treatment both tend to be covered.
