Amazon Stock Falls On Earnings Report

Amazon stock was pummeled after delivering a second-quarter earnings report that missed estimates, as consumers spent less time online as the Covid-19 restrictions were eased. Now, there’s likely to be a transition period where overall online growth will remain sluggish.
The Amazon earnings report arrived on July 29, after the market close. Revenue of $113.08 billion missed Wall Street estimates of $115.4 billion. Its third-quarter revenue outlook also fell short.
This is the first quarterly earnings report without Jeff Bezos at the helm. Andy Jassy officially took over as Amazon’s chief executive on July 5.
The Amazon second-quarter report comes as the company has exited the toughest part of the Covid-19 pandemic. Amazon scored massively during the pandemic as consumers flocked to online shopping while sheltering at home. The concern now is that it might also usher in more uncertainty about e-commerce growth for the next few quarters
The drop in Amazon stock was its largest decrease since May 1, 2020, when it fell 7.6%. Amazon stock is down 12% from its all-time closing high of $3,731.41 on July 8.
“Amazon hit an air pocket in near-term demand,” Monness Crespi Hardt analyst Brian White wrote in a note to clients. “However, we believe the company is uniquely positioned to exit this crisis as one of the biggest beneficiaries of accelerated digital transformation. We are lowering our estimates but maintaining our 12-month price of $4,500.”

The Ultimate Growth Stock
Amazon first sold shares to the public on May 15, 1997. The initial public offering was priced at $18 per share. There have been three stock splits, all between 1998 and 1999. Two of the splits were 2-for-1, while the other was a 3-for-1 split. The way splits work is that you receive more shares, but the stock price is adjusted accordingly so the value of your investment stays the same — it’s not free money.
So, if you invested $500 at the IPO price, you would have purchased 27 shares. You would now have 324 shares after the stock splits. Those shares would be worth $568,620 at the current price of $1,755 per share.
You wouldn’t be an Amazon millionaire yet, but that’s an amazing return of about 36% compounded annually, or a total return of 113,000%.
Investors who stuck with Amazon through the roller coaster ride of the dot-com bubble around 2000 would have been handsomely rewarded for their patience. The stock soared from a split-adjusted IPO price of $1.50 per share to $106.69 per share on Dec. 10, 1999. From there, it proceeded to fall 96% until it bottomed on Sept. 28, 2001, at $5.97 per share.
It’s amazing to think about it, but even if you had bought Amazon shares at the peak of the tech bubble in December 1999, you would still be up more than 1,500% on that investment. It’s an important lesson that investors tend to undervalue fast-growing companies with massive opportunities to expand. Just because a stock looks overvalued doesn’t mean it is.

What Is The Difference Between Amazon Fresh And Whole Foods
Amazon purchased Whole Foods in 2017, allowing Amazon customers to use their Prime account to do their grocery shopping.
However, Whole Foods service is not the same as Amazon Fresh while both stores offer the use of Amazon Prime accounts,
Amazon Fresh sells a wide selection of national food and grocery products, private labels, and store-made products at a more modest price.
Whole Foods, on the other hand, sells organic produce at a comparatively higher price.
Additionally, Amazon Fresh is intended for everyday grocery, while Whole Foods is targeted towards health-conscious consumers who are willing to spend extra for clean foods.

Investors Can Buy Amazon Stock In Canadian Dollars
The NEO Exchange introduced one new and very interesting ticker on Tuesday morning. That ticker is labeled AMZN ). Over 8,000 units had changed hands by midday with settlement within the $22.80-$23.28 price range.
Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce has introduced more trading convenience to Canadian investors through a currency-hedged Canadian Depository Receipt series on Amazon.com common shares.
Canadian Depository Receipts are certificates issued by domestic banks representing shares in foreign-listed companies. The CDR affords investors the opportunity to hold shares in the equity of foreign companies and to trade such shares on local exchanges.
Amazon hasnt directly listed its common stock in Canada yet, but local investors have the opportunity to buy AMZN stock in Canadian dollars thanks to the NEO Exchange and CIBCs latest innovation.
Local investors who are concerned about associated foreign currency risks, and those who dont like incurring foreign currency conversion costs when buying the U.S-listed companys shares now have a local alternative.
Most noteworthy, the new CDRs allow for fractional share ownership on AMZN. You dont have to raise over $4,600 to buy just one share in Jeff Bezoss online retail business anymore. Just $25 can get you into the game, and you can participate in Amazons future growth story with a much lower cash outlay.
Bottom Line: Is Amazon Stock Right For You
Amazons share price runs considerably high, so youll want to consider your long-term investment goals before becoming a shareholder. While the company retains blue-chip status, with a history of significant growth, its also important to be mindful of some of its competitors. Companies like Microsoft and Walmart also offer competitively successful stocks. And, similar to Amazon, both companies specialize in either e-commerce, retail or cloud computing.
Though Amazon has recently experienced significant growth in shares, no company is insusceptible to risk. Many factors, such as competition, climate and economy, ultimately affect the performance of a stock. Therefore, potential investors should carefully analyze a company from a holistic standpoint when considering buying. However, Amazon could be a great option for those looking for long-term financial gain. The companys global customer base and diversified product have ultimately brought it much success. If youre interested in stable and potentially promising investments, Amazon could be right for you.
Keep in mind that just because a stock is highly-solicited, it does not mean that it is the best investment for your portfolio. Make sure to consider your financial needs and investment goals, as well as the needs of your portfolio and the level of risk that your are willing to take on.

Amazon Bulks Up Shipping Capacity To Battle Holiday Season Snarls
The stop-and-start nature of the COVID-19 pandemic has snarled global supply chains that are optimized for just-in-time movement of goods, while labor and equipment shortages and a lack of space to store products have exacerbated the situation. Amazon, which plans to hire 150,000 seasonal workers in the United States during the holiday period, said it had also increased ports of entry across its network by 50%. The e-commerce giant is not the only company trying to use its scale and deep pockets to muscle its way through supply chain headaches.

Technical Analysis Of Amazon Stock

The IBD Stock Checkup tool shows that Amazon stock has an IBD Composite Rating of 85 out of 99. That’s up from 71 last week. The rating means Amazon stock currently outperforms 85% of all stocks. That’s in terms of the most important fundamental and technical stock-picking criteria.
But its Relative Strength Rating is a weak 54, but up from 38. The rating tracks market leadership by showing how a stock’s price movement over the last 52 weeks measures up against that of other stocks. Ideally, look for stocks with a rating of 80 or higher.

Amazon Stocks Of The Future: Fastly
Fastly is a bit more controversial for several reasons. First, shares enjoyed an absolutely explosive rally, climbing from the low-teens to more than $120 per share.
However, Fastly couldnt keep up with expectations and weve seen the share price plummet almost 70% from the highs. Part of this is due to the bear market in growth stocks. Part of its due to its largest customer moving a bulk of its revenue to another provider .
These arent the only observations that make Fastly somewhat controversial, though.
The company has many doubters as Fastlys modest growth rates draw doubts from bulls and jeering from the bears. The truth is, for investors who have done their research, Fastlys management has stated that it should garner momentum in the second half of the year, not the first half. The recent earnings report reiterates that outlook, with just okay quarterly results and guidance for next quarter, but a better-than-expected full-year outlook.
As Fastly aims to disrupt the cloud-computing industry, we are approaching the potential tipping point of a modest risk, massive reward opportunity for investors. If Fastly can nail the top spot of this industry and hold it down, it will enjoy years worth of strong secular growth. Not to mention, it has a growing cybersecurity unit as well.
