Amazon Prime Video Top 10 Shows And Movies: New And Trending Today September 16

A new thrill ride joins the list

Cynthia Addai-Robinson, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power

Amazon Prime Video’s first Thursday Night Football broadcast historic, as it’s the first streaming-exclusive NFL broadcast and the beginning of Amazon’s $1 billion per year, 11-year deal with the NFL debuted last night, and you know what? It felt like an NFL broadcast. That’s good news for Amazon, whose best-case scenario for Thursday Night Football was feeling like all the other NFL broadcasts and avoiding any technical snafus. Mission accomplished? However, Amazon is not counting the broadcast in its list of the top 10 movies and shows on Prime Video, so The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power reigns supreme again. Patrick Mahomes has nothing on Galadriel. The big news is a new movie has joined the list: The Grand Tour: A Scandi Flick parallel parks in the No. 8 spot.

The top 10 movies and shows on Prime Video are listed below, but we’re not just listing them we’re also putting our opinions on there to help you figure out which are worth watching. And to help you plan what you’ll watch next, we’ve added the new shows and movies coming to Prime Video, too.

The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 1

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before creator Jenny Han stays comfortably in her lane with this series about teenage love, teenage love triangles, and teenage love summers. Lola Tung plays Belly, yes, Belly, a young woman who heads out on a summer vacation to her family beach house, where she’s reunited with old friends and new potential boyfriends in the form of a pair of brothers who vie for her attention. Han adapted her best-selling book, the first in a trilogy, for the show.

The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button

This moving adaptation of the F. Scott Fitzgerald short story, directed by David Fincher, racked up an astonishing 13 Academy Award nominations including nods for best picture, best director, best actor and best supporting actress and the enthusiasm is understandable. Aside from its technical virtuosity, this lush, romantic hothouse bloom, as our critic put it, nimbly sidesteps the homework-assignment quality that haunts so many period literary adaptations, locating both the playfulness and melancholy in Fitzgeralds story of a man who is born old and ages backward.

The Electrical Life Of Louis Wain

Benedict Cumberbatch is already getting awards season notice for The Power of the Dog, but thats the only movie hes in this fall. In this biopic, Cumberbatch stars as the eccentric artist Louis Wain, whose trippy, anthropomorphised paintings of cats helped transform the public perception of felines. His work is widely credited as starting the widespread adoption of cats as pets.

The movie follows Wain from the late 1800s to the 1930s, as he seeks to unlock the electrical mysteries of the world. His ruminations lead his art to become more stylized and psychedelic, but also give him more insight into the love he shares with wife Emily . Watch now

Once Upon A Time In America

Sergio Leone’s sprawling Prohibition-era crime saga originally ran to 10 whole hours before eventually being trim to a lean three and three-quarter hours. Fair warning: it is LONG. But give it the time and you’ll be rewarded. Robert de Niro is Noodles, a street kid from New York City’s Lower East Side who starts putting together a gang of petty criminals running liquor and nicking bits and pieces here and there. But things quickly get a lot more serious. It’s a graphic, brutal film especially to its women and one which continues to divide critics, but the master of the Western brings all his lyricism to the heart of a dark city.

Once Upon A Time In The West

Amazon.com: Everyone

Fresh off the success of his genre-bending spaghetti westerns, the director Sergio Leone brought his signature dusty landscapes, offbeat music, brutal violence and morally flexible protagonists to this Hollywood studio production. Henry Fonda is truly chilling as a ruthless villain, conveying a pure evil not even hinted at in his decades of good-guy turns, and the films heroine and her tough-guy companions make an unlikely but effective team. Atmospheric, bracing and effortlessly cool, with an unforgettable closing confrontation.
