It might just be the perfect, money-saving alternative if you do things right

This article is part of a directory

One of the more interesting competitors might be , which is incredibly similar to Google Photos. There’s a big catch, though Amazon Photos doesn’t have a 100% free tier. You need to pay for Amazon Prime to enjoy the benefits.

Google Photos Vs Amazon Photos: Organization

How to Backup Photos on Amazon Prime

If you have a sizable image library to backup online, sorting options will be crucial to your user experience. Besides automatically categorizing snaps of people and places, both Google Photos and Amazon photos allow you to sort sets of images into any number of custom albums.

On paper, theres little to pick between the two. In practice, Google Photos proves slicker when it comes to organization: it will suggest smart albums based on the data and dates of your photos which might indicate a holiday, for example and format these into attractive folders with location labels and journey maps.

Like Amazon Photos, Google Photos also includes favorites functionality, which allows you to highlight any snap you like outside of a specific album. Unlike with Amazon Photos, the feature is accessible on the web as well.

Is The Amazon Prime Photo Storage Secure

The quick answer is yes, Amazon Prime Photo storage is secure. There are features like hiding photos, and you can password-protect them, adding an extra layer of security. But just like with other cloud services, once you share a picture with someone it because a little less secure.

If you already have an Amazon Prime account, it almost seems like a no-brainer to give Amazon Photos a try. Or if youre someone who likes to shoot a ton of videos and pictures, you can still get unlimited photo storage for under $1/month, which is an incredibly reasonable price. Not to mention the peace of mind that comes with knowing all of your photos are safe and sound.

Google Photos Vs Amazon Photos: Sharing Options

If you fancy showing certain shots to your family and friends, both backup platforms offer baked-in tools for straightforward sharing.

Amazon Photos allows you to share individual images and albums via email, Facebook or a dedicated link. You can also create shared albums and configure a Family Vault, which lets you pool your favorite pics with up to four other people. As long as one member has a Prime subscription, everyone with access to the vault is able to store unlimited images in there.

Google Photos has a similarly comprehensive set of sharing tools. Besides creating direct links to images and collaborative albums, you can also share snaps to social media. Integration of your Google contacts makes it easy to send shots straight to individuals or groups, too.

In certain regions, both Google Photos and Amazon Photos give you the option of ordering physical prints and photo gifts. Whether you choose to use this over the countless third-party printing services will come down to personal preference and pricing in your area. If you do fancy buying via your photo backup service, youll likely find that Amazon offers a wider range of products and variables, from print finish to wall hanging options.

There are many reasons to ditch Google Photos in favor of Amazon Photos. The latter offers better options and more advanced features. This is especially true if you have already subscribed to Amazon Prime/Amazon Drive, as the service comes included.

However, migrating from to is a bit tricky and going to take some time. Unfortunately, Google Photos no longer allows sync with Google Drive, so the sync and upload workarounds no longer work.

You can still get your photos from Google Drive to Amazon Prime, but it will take some work. Having higher quality images and the additional storage space will make it worth it. Not to mention, if you ever get locked out of your Google account, your favorite pictures will be saved in Amazon photos.

    What Files Can I Upload

In short, pretty much any image file format, whether compressed or raw. We tested this with raw files from recent Canon, Nikon and Panasonic cameras and encountered no problems. Even an unusual 51MP, 101MB .3FR Hasselblad raw file uploaded and previewed on Amazon Photos without issue. Its worth noting that animated picture files like iOS Bursts, Google Motion photos and 3D photos are not supported.

You can also uploaded video files to Amazon Photos, but given this is Amazon , video storage isnt really the prime focus here. As such, storage capacity for video files is limited to 5GB and will soon fill up if you shoot 1080p video or higher. You can chose to increase this for an extra monthly premium on top of your Prime membership cost. Currently, 100GB will set you back $19.99/year , 1TB $59.99/year , and 2TB $119.98/year .

    Setting Up Your Account

If you dont have an Amazon Prime account and you want to test it all out, you can use this link for a free 30-day trial. Then you can follow the rest of the steps as usual.

If you are already a Prime member, simply log in to your account. To get to Photos, click on Hello Accounts & Lists then scroll to Your Amazon Photos and click to open.

There are two settings to check before you get started. In the top right corner, click on your name then Settings.

    • Find People, Places, and Things: by default, this setting is turned on. This means that the software will scan your images and detect faces and objects. The purpose of this is to provide easy sorting & filtering based on people, locations, and even themes like dog and sunset. I keep this feature on for easy searching, but if youre sensitive about technology like this, you can turn it off easily.
    • Add Uploads to Family Vault: You can automatically add all of your photos to the Family Vault . By default, this option is turned-off, since using Family Vault is optional. If you know that youll be sharing every photo with your Family Vault members, this option would save you from manually adding photos each time. Most people will probably keep it off, though.

What Happens If I Cancel My Prime Membership

Amazon isnt completely forthcoming about what would happen to your photos if you unsubscribe from Prime. It simply states that:

If you cancel your Prime membership, you will no longer receive unlimited photo storage. Your total storage amount will be reduced to 5 GB, which is the amount of storage available to non-Prime Amazon customersIf your stored photo and video content exceeds 5GB, you can purchase additional storage.

However, for users that have purchased additional Photos storage to store extra videos, Amazon has a bit more detail on what would happen should you cancel an addition storage plan :

if your stored content is greater than the free storage quota on your account, you will not be able to upload additional files. You will, however, be able to view, download, and delete content. You should delete the over-quota content within 180 days or sign up for a different storage plan. After 180 days, content will be deleted starting with the most recent uploads first, until your account is no longer over-quota.

    Organizing & Uploading Current Photos

Im going to talk about how to organize your photos before I even tell you how to upload them, so that you can do it as efficiently as possible.

There are three levels of organization.

    1. Basic uploads

Any photo you upload can be sorted according to date taken and location taken. If you have the scanning feature enabled, you can also sort it by people, place, or thing detected. This is all done automatically and there is no action needed for you when uploading these general photos.

    2. Albums

You can choose to sort some or all of your photos into albums, which is most easily done when uploading. Consider using albums for:

    • Special events like weddings, vacations, photography sessions, etc. that you want to access all together
    • Groups of photos you want to share easily with others

When adding these photos, simply choose Create Album instead of Upload Photos.

Albums can also be easily created with existing uploaded photos by creating an album, selecting photos, and adding them to the album. You can just save time by doing it initially!

    3. Family Vault

One last mention of Family Vault if you know you will use this feature to share and collect photos with up to 5 others all in one place, but you have chosen NOT to automatically add all of your photos to Family Vault, you can select share after you upload groups of photos and add them to Family Vault from there.

    Options for uploads

You will most likely have photos on your phone, computer, and/or other devices.
